When I play shooters I normally have less than 35 fps, and fps sometimes goes down to 20, I have a question, seems a lot of ppl who have a good gaming PCs prefer having all in ULTRA in a game like Battlefield 3 with 40fps instead of having all on High-Medium but with 60fps.
So here my question: is really important to play at 60fps instead 40fps in game like Battlefield 3? and another for those who have 120hz monitors: it helps you a lot having over 100 fps in shooters or all this thing about playing more than 60fps is bullshit and you won't play better even if game looks smoother?
I don't know nothing about good gaming, in my PC games run very bad I get over 25fps having all down including resolution, but hopefully soon I will buy a new gaming PC :D

If you haven't played a game in 60 fps then you don't need it. It's not until you go back from 60 to 30 that you notice the difference. It's like getting your first glasses only not important :)

Yes, but I mean it helps you react better having 60fps instead of 40fps, or 100fps instead os 60fps? so you can play better, I like to know how feel that ppl who play games at this fps, not how I would feel if played games at this fps.

If you're a very competitive person, try to get 60 fps. If you're just casual or competitive but not too competitive 30-40 is fine.

For me above 45 is fine, below 30 becomes really noticeable.

p.s. Not that a haven't raided for year on world of warcraft @ 12FPS.

To me, I can't tell the difference past 30 FPS. Some can't do under 60 and crazy people can't do under 120. I've heard from people that having more FPS makes the game more reactive to your inputs, so it might matter, but to me no!

Hey and what CPU you have? because I will get an FX 6300 6X, with 660 GPU, in future I will buy another 660 and put it on SLi, as I read ppl say it won't bottleneck. Since my budget is limited I can't go with an i5-3570K for example, I need to buy a processor for 100€.

Do you know you need a 120Hz monitor for 120 fps? Regular monitors are capped at 60Hz, so there won't be any visible difference between 60 and 120. But in CoD4 above 125 fps you can jump higher.

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, no point going past 60fps without a 120mhz monitor, or you will just incur screen tearing.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well you can always overclock your monitor to about 90Hz - 100hz
P.S Even if he doesnt have a 120Hz monitor he still wanted to share that its capable of such high fps

People tend to say, that human eye cannot capture anything above 30? (too lazy to confirm) fps, but the difference is actually quite huge for me. If you got Counter-Strike (1.6), try to set fps to 100, 60 and 30 and see for yourself.

"Human eye can't see more than 30fps" is completely bullshit, I checked it, so you don't need to confirm.

Good ol' can't see more than 30 fps. XD Also If your monitor can't output more than 60 fps, there's no point of going over it.

Google 125 fps jump ;) It still has some use, while 120Hz gaming monitors are still rare and expensive.

Well, look at the wonders of a human eye. I got 60hz monitor, yet I do see difference between 100 and 60 fps in Counter Strike even though it is technologically impossible!? Anyway it is out of question to play with less than 100 fps for any serious player of Counter Strike, and even newer Source engine shows big difference in smoothness with rising fps, again even on 60hz monitor. I personally prefer to play pretty much every game in at least 60 fps, but rather 100 and more. It just seems much more pleasing for me.

It’s worth noting that fps can have a big impact on mouse responsiveness, so it’s not so much about how the game looks, and more about how the controls feel.

I wish I could've done that... I had an okay PC, then switched to a laptop for 2 years, it's a long time but I wasn't able to play at such a low FPS. I'd rather not play it than have horrible lags.

The difference is not something you can see, but something you can feel. For instance in shooters it allows for more precision in moving the crosshair around.

It is important to have FPS that doesn't fluctuate too much. It's not low FPS that generates visual lags and freezes, it's abrupt aberrations.

Ideally, your framerate should be the same as your monitor's refresh rate. The majority of monitors are 60Hz, that's why 60fps is standard. If you have a 60Hz monitor and you are running a game at 100fps, visibly there will be no difference however some games might feel faster due to more hardware polls (smoother mouse).

If you have an 120Hz, you want 120 fps. I'm just running stuff ~60 since I'm on such a high res.

If benchmarks aren't absolute lies, most high-end cards get around 60-80 FPS on 1920x1080 (which is a standard resolution amongst gamers these days). He'd probably need SLI / CrossfireX to go beyond 100 FPS.

I think 60 fps is something just about every game should be doing, especially these days. It is a huge difference over 30 fps. It really delivers a much smoother, and enjoyable, experience. Console games are really bad when it comes to this. Most of the games seem to run at 30 fps. I can tolerate it, but I'm never happy about it.

I love to have my games looking nice, but I will gladly sacrifice (just about) whatever I can to achieve a constant 60 fps in all of my games (unless it looks really awful, like PlanetSide 2 with the render quality all the way down.. Ew =P), with the exception to games like The Elder Scrolls and being heavily modded (Needing at least 30 fps). Those games I just can't go without them looking beautiful. =P

This and it also drives me insane. If I really want to play a game with max settings I may wait for 2 months for an oportunity, but I can't handle less than 60 fps, my eyes just can't focus. >_<

Skill is what matters, not ridiculously high fps. 30+ fps is fine for most people and 60fps should be more than good enough unless you are being paid to win.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Unless you are being paid to win.

So you contradict yourself by admitting that more FPS is required to win, which means more FPS does help enhance one's skills, which means the more FPS the merrier regardless of the situation. Skill is not the only thing that matters. Tell that to a gunslinger when he faces a tank.

Two players with equal skill, one playing at 30 FPS, the other at 60 FPS: The former will lose, no matter what.

Fact. More FPS has a direct impact on your precision and aiming and movement. Even if you don't see it, you feel it and take advantage of it. That's the reason professional players, using high-end rigs, still play on the lowest settings possible (except for resolution, of course).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Multiplayer? Yes, because more FPS results in better precision, regardless of your eyes perceiving the extra frames or not. Top tournament players with extreme gaming rigs still play on the lowest settings, and it's because of this reason. You won't see it, but you will most definitely feel it, in multiplayer.

Singleplayer? As long as it's all smooth and playable, enjoyable, no, there shouldn't be need for more than 35, even in shooters.

Done.

The thing about lowest settings, I do that too by the way and I'm no near a pro, is also because it reduces the display of many unnecessary things that might "block" view or distract. It reminds me on CSS how with higher settings you'd have all kinds of junk flying around after a grenade exploded.

It mostly depends on whether or not you really CARE about it. Of course, running an FPS at 60FPS will allow you to display EVERYTHING that goes on the screen with precision (vsync improves this even further) and smoothness. You'll even see players in tournaments lowering details in games in order to reach the 60FPS mark (or more).

I remember when it was out and hard hitting, Quake III was a great example, the avg player would play with an extreme FOV and easily at around 120FPS, just to be able to react to his opponents.
