Hey guys, after all those NOT-A-PUZZLE mini-games that you enjoyed so much over the years, I'm making a real game now and would be happy if you tried it out and reported back your comments. Thanks!

About the game:

Run and jump, collect coins, confront enemies and avoid traps, open gates and find secret stashes. It's a simple 2D platformer with a twist: You're not a hero from the castle about to slay an evil dragon, you're a goblin cook working for the dragon! It starts slowly but things get more and more complicated as you go.

Story:

Your master has been robbed by a pesky rogue, and it's kind of your fault. Follow them through 5 different settings, from the dragon's lair in the Fiery temple of Doom, all the way to the Castle Keep, and return the stolen treasure! But beware, the closer you get to civilization, the more dangerous it becomes for a defenseless goblin.

Features:

  • Over 35 levels filled with enemies, traps and secrets.
  • Unique game mechanics for every world.
  • World map - know where you're going!
  • Two difficulty settings (casual & old school).
  • Ability to save & continue later, for casual players.
  • Keyboard (You can rebind the keys) and gamepad support.
  • Cool music by Kevin MacLeod

Demo:

A free demo is available and it features the initial two worlds, so you can get acquainted with the story and mechanics very well. If you decide to buy, your save should work in the full game too! Demo is updated regularly so it's always compatible with the latest version of the game.

Why is there only coins? I want to collect gold ingot, gems, cash, gift cards, smartphones, tablet PCs and many more ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I was thinking about adding rubies and chests and stuff, but for now opted to start without for simplicity. It's easy to add them later and give them certain value expressed in coins (2, 3, 5... coins for each diamond picked up or chest opened)

You sir, are awesome. Sure beats the hell out of a math puzzle that I have to Google the answers for, if I can even decipher enough of it to do that (I'm bad at math).

Small update:

I've replaced "quit to menu" with "save and quit" for casual players (hardcore still have to play in one session) with ability to continue from the main menu from where you quit last time (hc players will see this option grayed out).

Demo files have been updated accordingly and are compatible with your last session, so you'll be able to load the place where you pressed esc the last time.

some small hints that you'll not find in the readme:

  • xbox gamepad should work fine so if you have it, try using it
    • you can use ctrl to skip story screens if you play for nth time

OK, I played a little, stopped somewhere in the second world. I love platformers, I had to try this. For now - it's good, but not great.

Good:
-I really like the graphics, especially the animations. Smooth pixel art. As smooth as it can be :)
-Music/sounds are nice too.
-Controls - It's not about the buttons, just general feeling. My char does what I want him to do. It's really precise. Whatever: perfect. Some may say it's too fast - I think it's really PERFECT.

Bad (you probably know all of that, but still - you want opinions!):
-That axe throwers - not in general, but in some places. Like when you use a jump pad and get hit the same second you land on the platform high above, in result - falling down. No way to dodge.
-It needs an invincibility frame. It's not that hard to get trapped with no way to escape. One bad jump on a buzzsaw and you may not get a chance to run away. Or spikes - 3 lives means nothing when you can't save yourself. If you want them to be that way - set them to deal 3 damage, for example.
-Sometimes I got under the jump pads, causing an animation loop. You can just jump and it's all fixed, but it's a bug. Not sure when pad doesn't trigger right and why.

Overall: I hope to see the final version on Steam someday if you change it a little. I won't wait for bundles to get it ;)

Thanks for the input :)

  • Axe throwers - still work in progress apparently. I nerfed them couple of times, but I need to fix axes being homing devices and maybe slow them some more, it's only the 2nd world.
  • Invincibility frame - it exists but it's shortened during testing from what it used to be. Will try to find better settings, as several people think it's not perfect yet. Problem is when I change it to fix one thing, I break other (lava/spikes VS enemies VS ...)
  • Jump pads bugging - know about this, working on it.

Another small update

  • When you hit lava/spikes you get teleported back to where you jumped from
  • axe throwers axes are not homing anymore but have predictable speed and arc
  • background music volume raised from 15 to 25% (settings not implemented yet)

Please note: Loading a save from previous version may end up bugging the game later. Try a new session if you're checking the differences between an old and new demo, and not playing for the first time.

oh, yeah, another gib: https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/wfWyi/tis-100

Known issue: selecting continue on the first run when no session to continue is available can break the game. Will be fixed in the next release, minor issue.

Newest pre-alpha release (v14, 0.0.2.2) brings a settings menu featuring:

  • screen size (fullscreen vs window) options,
  • background music volume (10 predefined values from 0% to 90%) options
  • keyboard keys rebinding options. No gamepad keys rebinding for now.

and reworked save/continue system in order to fix a bug with loading saves from an older game version. Please remove the previous version from your system prior to installing the new one.

After 24 hrs of rigorous testing by a dedicated team of 5 people, all the known bugs are gone. Worlds 1 and 2 are finally done from a gameplay perspective (thus fast overnight updates that were being released faster than people were able to download them). There are still some opposite opinions about couple of game design decisions, but I'm happy with what I have for now.

Finally I feel that I'm ready to start working on world 3 (Swamp), which includes drawing new tiles, coming up with new mechanics (traps and environment) and also, creating modified and brand new enemies.

Build 0.0.2.12 has been dubbed "stable" and will stay available for downloads alongside the newer builds (which will be marked as 0.0.3.x and contain new levels for the world 3 for early testing).

For those who want to take a look behind the magical veil of gamedev (or in my case, goblining), I've made a video showing how a platform is made from concept art through sprite drawing all the way to working object in game (in a mockup level that's not gonna be in game):

Not yet, wanna make at least 80% of the game before I submit it to Greenlight. Luckily, thanks to great people from SG and other online communities, game is already tested well and all known bugs are fixed so if everything goes well with creating worlds 3-5 alpha and beta stages won't last long.

A new blog post about the enemies you can encounter in the game. It's very short and there's a video so you don't even have to read ;)
http://blog.goblinsandcoins.com/2016/08/archetype-walkers.html

What's new with the game?

I've created 3+1 enemies and 1 new trap (lava/spikes kind) for the third world. Also I've made doorways for it and done a lot of new and evolved tiles, enough to start with level design very soon. These new levels won't be available in the demo version, sorry.

[Minor] Build 0.0.3.2b

  • Added slight delay (1/3 of a second) to story screens because with certain gamepads you could have skipped them altogether on accident - please check now and report if it works as it should (hold space rushes text, press space goes to next screen, ctrl skips altogether; should work similar on gp)
  • Fixed a typo (don't ask)
  • Added a required delay of 2 seconds to ax throwers so there should be no way for them to throw 2 axes in a row now without at least 2 seconds inbetween
  • Improved the looks of a bean soup kettle by adding embers underneath, better shading, a heart marking on the side and animated heart/bubbles on top
  • Added more bean soup kettles to world 2 and world 3 levels.
