I really like grim and realistic first person shooters. The bland and gray color schemes and the extremely dire environments are what make the games so atmospheric and realistic in my opinion. I've been looking for a cool team based first person shooter that I could play with my friends that isn't too heavy on the wallet.

I've been playing Ready or Not for a while now and I like it quite a bit. Some of the scenarios and very unsettling and the atmosphere is very hopeless. I really like the slow pace and the fast thinking this game offers. With the lack of being able to run away from certain situations it makes the game a lot more strategic and in return, scary. My favorite missions are Rust Belt and A Lethal Obsession. The dark caves of Rust Belt make the mood of the game feel very isolated and out of your control. The lack of information about where those tunnels lead is very unnerving and frightening, especially when you hear footsteps and screaming down the halls. It was one of my favorites since it really made the game feel very slow and daunting. What I liked about A Lethal Obsession was that when you were outside in the rather dry forest, the sun was shining and it wasn't that bleak as some of the other missions, but until you entered the front door, then things got serious. The mood change from when you were navigating the forest to when you enter the tiny house is a rather unwelcoming feeling. Unlike in Rust Belt, there isn't any time to adjust to the new environment. In Rust Belt, you had a nice long walk to the bottom of the cave before anything really started happening. I like the environment of the game but I still feel like I need that PvP action more than anything, pacifying an artificial NPC is not as satisfying as actually neutralizing an actual player.

I just played about an hour of Hell Let Loose because of the free weekend and I had a lot of fun, I really loved cooperating together and taking points of interest. Is there any game that does this better than Hell Let Loose that is less demanding on the wallet? Summer sale is coming up too and I have a budget so I am ready to spend. I am open to any suggestions and recommendations.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint got updated, probably worth a try. Never played it though just saw a couple of videos about it on Youtube. It's on sale now at the Ubisoft store.

It looks cool but rather sci-fi, it also has mixed reception so I am not sure how I feel about that. I think I'll hold off on Tom Clancy games for now.

It's really not scifi. Without spoiling, some advanced technology is involved but nothing that doesn't already exists in a more limited capacity.
I wouldn't really call it a realistic tactical shooter but playing in co-op (or even with AI teammates), you can make it pretty tactical, especially when dealing with bigger enemy locations and you can now tweak settings for a more realistic experience, by eliminating most of the HUD, the gear levels, bonuses and making injuries harder to heal.

It's not a must-play but it can be fun.

Me and my friends liked wildlands... We got breakpoint recently and we didn't enjoyed it... I suggest watching gameplay first to get a feel for it or try it first if you can...

I have yet to try it myself, but if you want that "PVP action" in "grim and realistic first person shooters", I recommend Bodycam https://store.steampowered.com/app/2406770/Bodycam/

You got realistic graphics and sound design

It definitely looks cool, but it seems that it is rather rough around the edges at the moment, I will definitely keep an eye on it in the future. I've heard some optimization issues and some other small complaints about it so I want to see where this game ends up in the future. As far as realism goes, it does a great job. Guns are loud, powerful and terrifying. Everything from the sound design to the graphics is pretty much on point. Gameplay is rather here and there so I'll just observe this for now. Thank you for the recommendation!

It's not realist like arma3 because operators have a lot of electronic gadgets, but why not rainbow six siege with your friends ? It's often on sale, plenty of players, you've to defend and take objectives together, there is some stress (fast intense sessions 30-40min, while arma3 is slow paced long sessions 2-3h) ?

It's quite similar to ready or not in the aspect that you assault rooms all the time with explosives.
There are often free week-ends if one day you wanna try.

I've been thinking about Rainbow Six Siege but I've decided that I don't want to play it. It's kind of like a tactical Counter Strike where you try to eliminate the enemy team and whatnot and it doesn't really have any depth to it, unlike Hell Let Loose where you have to capture enemy points and take home a victory--rather than just cause bloodshed. It's also a pretty well ruined Ubisoft game, with tons of microtransactions and other weird crap. If I want something similar, I think it's safe to go with Ready or Not.

I've yet to try out Insurgency: Sandstorm myself but first game is probably one of my most memorable gaming experiences ever. Expected nothing cause got it from a 1$ bundle, got one of the best FPS I ever played.

Insurgency: Sandstorm looks pretty cool and I've heard only good things about it. Insurgency itself looks rather aged and seems like the greatness has died down a little bit. I've only really considered Insurgency: Sandstorm because it is pretty cheap, just around 10€ on sales and looks pretty neat. I'm not a big sand dunes guy but I would be willing to give it a shot for just a couple dabloons. If I do get my hands on Insurgency in the future, I will definitely try it as well.

It's not realistic, and arguably not very tactical, but I like BattleBit Remastered a lot. It's cheap even without discount, and it captures the feeling of old Battlefield games before they got crappy.

I played BattleBit Remastered during a free weekend for 10 hours, it was tons of fun and I will definitely buy it on the summer sale if it's on a nice discount. Not sure why I sat on it in the past but I do definitely want it now. Super fun to just pop heads and coordinate attacks like doofuses. It kind of reminds me of a more casual Hell Let Loose a little bit. Not a realistic tactical experience, but certainly a fun one.

What about SWAT 4? There's coop and Ready or Not tries to be its spiritual successor. It's available on GOG, though of course it's an old game and there's no focus on PvP, that's not what these games are about.

I've never actually heard of that game. I just looked up a few videos and I got to say, I get where Ready or Not gets its inspiration from. Wow, it's so weird to see the successor and then the predecessor. It looks like a GTA San Andreas Ready or Not mod 😭. (I apologize for that comment)

I don't really use GOG but that game is really cool, I doubt I'll ever play it since I have Ready or Not but that is super neat. Thank you for the amazing discovery.

Ouch, you're right, it got pretty expensive, bought it for 30€ years ago and wasn't aware it's at 50€ now.
You can try Arena Breakout, it's similar to EFT, but not released yet.

I heard that Gray Zone Warfare works basically the same way as EFT, just a little differently. I'm not quite sure what Arena Breakout is but it looks pretty cool. I'm looking for something different I think.

From the ones that i played i can recommend this ones as (more) realistic as the most other ones:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/222880/Insurgency/
Taking cover is EXTREMLY adviced. If you run around like a CS 2 chicken you die very fast and it don't give endless respawns.
The new Insurgency Sandstorm is cheaper at the moment but i don't own it and can't rate it because of this.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/242860/Verdun
WW 1, to take more cover is elementary, at least as long as you are able to :D

https://store.steampowered.com/app/633460/Tannenberg/
Very similar to Verdun.

And "Rainbow Six Siege" isn't so relaistic as the ones above but i had fun with it (firing through walls, kicking, many entrance points into buildings etc.).
Good fitting to my play style that is sometimes very defensive and sometimes very berserk :-D

In the same series as Verdun and Tannenberg, there's Isonzo https://store.steampowered.com/app/1556790/Isonzo
Verdun is on the German-French side of the war is a lot about position taking and trenches.
Tannenberg is about the East European side war. Plenty of large battles on big plains
And Isonzo is on the Italian side, where a lot of verticality ensues, with battles at top of mountains, it's also the most modern of those three by a long shot, but each is worth for their gameplay.

Very interesting recommendations with Verdun and Tannenberg and as McNewHolder said, the Isonzo game is really cool too. I've only really heard about Isonzo and that it is very thought out and fun but not about the other 2. I do want to try Insurgency at some point since I've heard that it is one of the best tactical shooters out there it seems.

Arma and Sandstorm are definitely my favourite when it comes to this. Arma 3 has a lot freedom when it comes to making your own scenarios and playing in multiplayer and also has a lot of realism features missing from Insurgency. Sandstorm is pretty linear (at least on console. i've never played the pc version).

I'm personally thinking of getting either Arma 3 or Hell Let Loose, they both seem like very open-world and cooperative. I personally love the team synergy when you pull something tricky off with a buddy. Like detaining three armed suspects in Ready or Not with a friend while getting fire from all angles. Insurgency: Sandstorm seems cool and it is pretty cheap so I am inclined to try it but I am not 100% sold on it yet. Hell Let Loose seems like the most fun option but damn, is it expensive.

I totally recommend Ready or Not, best way to describe it in my opinion is "Payday 2, but reversed". If you've ever played Payday 2 it is kind of like that, more grim, but instead of robbing you are unrobbing.

I had over 1000 hours in Arma 3, mostly the King of the Hill mission and Battle Royale mods. i had to remove it from my account as it was eating up too much of my life. :)

My understanding is that squad was geared toward people who knew the jargon and all had mics and were serious mil-simmers. At the time I heard it, they were kinda unfriendly towards newbs or what 8they* considered basic questions.

Wow, I am looking for some sort of game that I can play for a long time. I'm thinking about Insurgency and Insurgency: Sandstorm but they don't seem to be games I'd play for 100+ hours. Arma 3 has great replay value from what I've heard, same with Hell Let Loose. There is just always something new to experience and it's great. Ready or Not got quite stale since you keep playing on the exact same maps, I had the same problem with Payday 2 although that got boring pretty late (around 180 hours of gameplay).

I'm definitely considering Arma 3 and Hell Let Loose, but I think I might have to go for Arma 3 since it is a little bit cheaper and I think it's probably a lot of fun as well. I love coordinating with people and stuff like that so I think I'd have a lot of fun :)

Hi! My one and only love is old ARMA: Cold War Assault, aka Operation flashpoint. Loved the drama (surviving and left alone at the island) and a live feeling of being at a warfield.
Also played and liked Operation flashpoint: Resistance - it is add-on/mod with more stealth or lesser group war operations.
Did not play much more, only tried newer ARMA, but lost interest in such series.

Arma: Cold War Assault seems to be quite old. I can only imagine how it felt to play when it first came out. Not that sure about Operation Flashpoint though, didn't find a lot about it online. I'll definitely need to look more into Arma. Arma 3 looks the most modern and the most played to date so I think I'll have to go with that. Thank you for the recommendations!

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis - is the original name of the game that was made by Bohemia interactive and published by Codemasters. After a breakout the title name rights belonged to publisher and Bohemia started using name ARMA for it is future war sims. And made a great series, while Codemasters only tried to profit from the name and made shitty Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.
The main problem of first game was not very convenient controls, so you still can try it remembering this. Or simply read about its story

That's pretty cool, not as fascinating as something like SWAT 4 but really cool to learn the history of Arma games. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising has some bad reviews on Steam and seems to be pretty frowned upon (AHEM, Electronic Arts). Closest thing I've got to playing Arma is playing DayZ, after all it came from an Arma 2 mod.

I want to give you my opinion on two of the already mentioned games, Arma 3 and Ready or Not.
Arma 3 is complex, almost every single button on your keyboard will do something. There's a lot. That can be a positive or a negative though depending on your preferences. I personally found it a bit overwhelming and never really got into the game even though I've heard its great.
As for Ready or Not, it really caught my interest when it released and was one of few games I've bought full price in many many years, and it delivered. I didn't play it as much as I was hoping to but I want to return to it and play more in the future. So the game has really good customization to create your own loadouts with various tools, explosives, weapons and even weapon attachments, which I loooove!! The gameplay is very fun although also VERY difficult, I could only manage to beat the first mission with the time I played. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, it could provide a lot of room for replayability and improvement and trying out new strategies and such. It is very very tactical though, it's no run and gun, you have to play very smart because the enemy AI can kill you very fast, expect to die a lot. But its so satisfying when you manage to strategically take them out, feels so good. And I'm sure they've improved the game alot since I played it it's a while ago now.
Well that's about all I had to say, hopefully it helps you with deciding what to play, and whatever game you end up choosing, have a ton of fun!!

The fact you can do a lot of things in Arma 3 makes me happy, I like complexity and the ability to do things as efficiently as possible.

As for Ready or Not, I love it. I haven't played much of it either, although I definitely want to play more of it. I love that you get every gun in the game at the start and you can just choose a loadout. It's so cool to try get S ranks and get those cool tattoos. I love the no run and gun aspect of the game it is just really fun to strategize and take things SLOW. I have also tried going run and gunning and it has worked, it is nearly not as effective as taking your time. I really like playing the game with my friends too, just a ton of fun. I'm just looking for a change of pace since the PvE aspect is getting a little stale.
