I was just talking to somebody in the chat and it's come to my attention that since the site is in English, it is alienating / making it much more difficult for somebody who doesn't understand the language. How feasible would it be to implement different language settings? The FAQ has already been translated into a couple of other languages, illustrating both the need for language settings as well as people nice enough to volunteer their time in helping with translation.

If you'd like to volunteer with translation please let me know by replying.

Mods - please let me know if this can be made possible as well.

Same here, if a full site translation starts, i'd be happy to help with spanish :D

Though i'm not really sure this would happen; personally i don't really mind either.

Do you even realise that less and less people even care to learn other languages? No? Neither do I.

What do you mean by "language settings?" Do you mean the site would automatically translate any foreign text into the language of your choice? (Ex: You have the site language set to "English," someone posts in spanish, and the post the is translated into English for you. Meanwhile, your English post would be translated into spanish for the spanish-speaking person).

While I would strongly appreciate the site remaining in English to enable communication amongst all members, I would volunteer to help translating it in either German/French/Portuguese should there be an initiative. I don't see it happening though for various reasons, mainly because there doesn't seem to be a real need yet. The only thing we could do instead would be to have the FAQ/Rules in different languages so as to explain to non-English speakers what they can and cannot do.

Edit: I would support subforums, although once again I think there is no real need for now.

I'd really not like everything on the site being translated because then it's going to start producing threads all over the forums in different languages. If we had different subforums that wouldn't be a problem.

I don't really think there's a need for a translation. It should be easy enough to understand the navigational side of the website.
Come to think of it - the website itself isn't all that text heavy, so it should be straight-forward enough to understand as is.

Should also be easy enough to do the site translation then. :)
Depending on the demand we could also have subforums. Then again I can only provide some ideas. We'll have to see what cg thinks.

Use Google Chrome, it should offer to translate the page for you.

Only English is alienating non-English users? Implement this and 80% will alienate everyone but their own language speaking members.

No this is a bad idea. Instead speaking English should be promoted. This is an international community and we need to live with each other not next to each other.

Well then better get going around the world and teach every single one of us to speak English. And by saying it's an international community... http://www.steamgifts.com/forum/PmzwH/steamgifts-is-a-global-community

Yea it's way better to isolate yourself from the rest of the community who do take the effort to speak English because they know not everyone speaks their native language.
Letting everyone go their own way is the ultimate way to kill a community. Why even bother with it then if everyone just isolates themselves?

This has been suggested many times over the past few months, especially while we are growing. We've had members translate the FAQ into multiple languages, but as I've stated before, translations can be sloppy and it's a lot of work to translate the website. If we used an automatic service to translate the website, it would probably generate even more problems when specific rules don't go over very well in other languages. It's always been a great suggestion to think about, but in reality, it's a lot harder to pull off. Remember that it's just cg developing these three websites on top of his real life and actual job. It would be very time consuming, on top of everything else that requires daily attention and new features being implemented.

Maybe users speaking the same languaje can work together to make the most accurate trasnlation and then give the data to cg?
