The community isn't awful. Remember the game was a mod and made by the community and for the community. It was just made into a Steam game later on. The Community have people with horrible attitudes and that is how all games have people like them everywhere. Dota 2 really isn't F2p but you can buy it before for like $30. The only way to get it is from a friend who has gifts then you will have 3 gifts as well afterwards.

the early access for the beta is 30$, after the beta is over the game is f2p - also there are probably as much unused dota-invites around as people currently using dota, so you could say that it's free (and more or less open-beta by now)

He was right about everything before the "Dota 2 really isn't f2p" part.
Every online community is similar as there are good people and bad people (to hang out with) in them. Dota2 is no exception. The competitive side might bring out more out of people than let's say TF2 where basicly nothing hangs in the balance from map to map (exception strengthens the case in point, I happened to play a TF2 match earlier this week were two grownup man were flaming each other nonstop like there is no tomorrow, the flaming covered such amazing topics as: probable job opportunities for eachothers' mothers, mouth hygiene, reproducing organ sizes etc.).

Wait what, how much Dota have you actually played in the past what, since it got onto steam... The invites are worth absolutely nothing and you can get one for free just by adding the DOTA2DISPENSER or any simlar, those bots have inventories full of dotas. The dota2 community is full of pricks, everywhere. Sometimes you might get in a game with good people, but then the other team got someone ruining the game for them instead. It's always like that. After 2 thousand hours of it I kind of got the feel of it. Instantly muting a lot of people these days in Dota matches.

I play LoL, and believe me, our comunity is way worse.

I played League of Legends for quite some time and really enjoyed it.
Same goes for Tribes: Ascend. Probably the most rewarding FPS I ever tried.
I recently tried the Beta for Firefall and liked it, even though it's still in heavy development.

edit: Steam? Ehh... I tried Dragon Nest and it was repetitive as hell. Mabinogi is probably the most original out of the lot. Also, most unplayable.

Computer? Use public libraries. Internet? Free wifi.
But I guess you'll have to have a pen drive with all the game files to play...and that costs money.

The only really f2p game I play consistently is LoL. I also bought a founders pack for Firefall and play that every now and again with friends.

My favourite F2P game is probably Star Conflict.
