Hi all, I could use some help. Recently I bought a SAPPHIRE Radeon 6850 and it had been running great, but today only, it has locked up twice when I was playing STALKER. And by locked up, I mean I have to shut it off with the power button to use it again, can't Ctrl Alt Delete out. I have been running the fans at 75% speed and the highest it seemed to go was low 60s Celsius. So I have a few questions...

  1. I'm pretty sure it's not, but could it be caused by the game? (I also have been playing alot of DoD:S and it hasn't ever froze.
  2. Does this graphics card have any know/widespread problems?
  3. Any idea on how to fix it?

Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance!

EDIT Well, I think we've narrowed down the problem to the power supply, I have a Rosewill 550w, its from 08, maybe because I'm using it with a brand new card that takes a lot more juice? Lastly, If it is the power supply, whats the best one I can get for my money?

EDIT I was recommended to run the graphics on really low, not sure why, but it still froze.

EDIT: I think i figured it out, the times it froze, i used manual fan control so the Vcard wouldn't get as hot, even though it has it's own management thing and adjusts it by itself, it somehow conflicted with my manual fan control.

Seems like your PSU is running out of juice.

This may be it, what Power Supply do you have?

It's a Rosewill. 550w.

EDIT: Also, the Graphics card needs a minimum of 500w

Does this tell you anything?

Do not overclock you GPU. You can never tell from that what's the fault. Its either your CPU overheating or your PSU. Use some software like AIDA64 or hwmonitor to note your temperatures while gaming.

Also, if not the temps, what should I do next?

Speedfan is also a quick and easy way to check for GPU and Core temperatures.

Could be Stalker. I think Stalker has a lot of problems. Mods might fix it. idk.

Ive played STALKER vanilla and heavily modded. It never freezes like that.

I play Stalker with the very same card, no problems. Sounds like a PSU problem to me.

I have the same exact card and was playing stalker today with no problems at all. My card only goes up to 60 or so degrees Celcius while playing Crysis on highest.

I had same locks with Worms Armageddon (old one) and 5770 card long ago. Couldn't understand what caused it too.
Now I have 6850 and I hadn't locks for a long time.
Maybe try to install all updates from Windows Update (also those optional updates), update drivers etc?

I have a 6870 and my temperatures go up to 80, so thats no problem. Change your PSU to something well known like Corsair, Seasonic, Enermax, etc.

40-50? Thats normal. Even at 80 you shouldnt be that worried.

Yup. 40-50°C is a normal temperature range for a CPU, and some GPUs can reach the alarming temperatures of 120°C before breaking.

Recommended PSU for 6850 is 500W, but you seem to have enough power.

Did you have a graphic card before? if so what model? and did you uninstall the drivers for the old Graphic card?

EDIT: Could you list the components in your PC

I think it's your CPU that is bottlenecking your graphic card, i recommend upgrading to quadcore.

Hmm it could be, i'm not sure though, I've got people saying it's a power supply, im unsure though...

I'm going to add you so we can chat.

This might be a wild hunch. But if you use intel processor, install and run 'GPU-Z' if it says something about OpenCL, then download the newest driver:

http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/graphics

Happened to me yesterday, thought the same thing about PSU or graphics card, its a wild hunch but just see if it is the real reason.

Time for you to get a new PSU, not too sure about what power specs you need though.
