Behold the Steam Elite, these people are willing to pay +$500 for a temporary profile skin and a badge:

http://steamcommunity.com/auction/item/1890-2014-Holiday-Profile

Only the top 100 Elite will have that badge at the end of the sale... I know, their money, their problem, but wow...

i recall, the first one (holz) was a little over 1 million gems...

Then it was much cheaper with the gem exploit, there was like 2 million packs on the market and they were 3 cents each.

it was after steam resolved the issue

1m /100 = 10,000 * 3 cents = 30,000 cents / 100 = 300 dollars.
This assumes they did not have any emotes/wallpapers to burn, and just bought everything at the optimal average.

It's fine to spend thousands on new games and steam deals and buy hundreds of games that you'll never even open, but $500 for a badge is insane. That's almost a week's worth of minimum wage salary, they must be like billionaires!

almost a weeks worth of minimul wage? lol you must live in a rich country, cuz in the USA, a week of minimum wage is like $280

The bare minimum wage in the USA is $7.25. If you work 8 hours a week during all 7 days you'll make $406.

Taxes, how do they work?

A. People who make minimum wage pay very little in taxes and a lot of it gets refunded at the end of the year anyway.
B. I'm not actually saying that someone who makes minimum wage should spend a week's salary on a Steam badge, I'm just saying that anyone who wants one can save up for one.

Yeah, and I'm just saying that you're completely wrong in anyone taking home anywhere near $406 a week after taxes as in your example.

Protip, if you for SURE know that you have to pay taxes, or that you wont have an issue paying at the end of the year, you can "opt out" of having income tax removed every check.

Who works 8 hours a day 7 days a week? Every job I've ever even heard of that pays minimum wage won't let you have that kind of overtime.

Permalink

im pretty sure its illegal for a job to make you work 7 days a week without time off. so your adding 2 days . working a job only requires 5 days a week.

Minimum wage salary here is ~$350, so 1 week is $85-$90. I hate living in South America.

Lots of money spent? Probably, but I also think that gems are still being exploited. I doubt there quite as many money wasters on Steam as there are overspending bids in the auctions.

Edit: Holy shit, didn't see the badge exp on that until now. That's just getting stupid.

Oh? Clearly you dont know about the level 5k+++ people that have spent thousands of USD on just leveling the badges. Its the same concept as the "free" games you play.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, I didn't say nobody spends a shit ton of money on Steam. I'm just saying that it seems like more people than that are making ridiculous bids. Also, seeing mentions of ongoing gem exploits on another forum.
As for the "free" games, I assume you mean all the F2P games that have subs or microtransactions. Yeah, I avoid those like the plague, usually, and for good reason.

That's way too much experience for a single badge. Valve are pretty cray cray.

Then again, what's more crazy, the fact that it exists, or the fact that people paid so much money for it? If the background at least stick around until next year, then maybe it might have been worth it. Either way, I got my win in the bidding war and didn't have to spend more than $3, so I'm already a happy camper. :)
