It's fine to spend thousands on new games and steam deals and buy hundreds of games that you'll never even open, but $500 for a badge is insane. That's almost a week's worth of minimum wage salary, they must be like billionaires!

The bare minimum wage in the USA is $7.25. If you work 8 hours a week during all 7 days you'll make $406.

A. People who make minimum wage pay very little in taxes and a lot of it gets refunded at the end of the year anyway.
B. I'm not actually saying that someone who makes minimum wage should spend a week's salary on a Steam badge, I'm just saying that anyone who wants one can save up for one.

Yeah, and I'm just saying that you're completely wrong in anyone taking home anywhere near $406 a week after taxes as in your example.

"Oh boo hoo, people spending money in a way I wouldn't."

Lots of money spent? Probably, but I also think that gems are still being exploited. I doubt there quite as many money wasters on Steam as there are overspending bids in the auctions.
Edit: Holy shit, didn't see the badge exp on that until now. That's just getting stupid.

No, I didn't say nobody spends a shit ton of money on Steam. I'm just saying that it seems like more people than that are making ridiculous bids. Also, seeing mentions of ongoing gem exploits on another forum.
As for the "free" games, I assume you mean all the F2P games that have subs or microtransactions. Yeah, I avoid those like the plague, usually, and for good reason.

I'm pretty sure that if you're spending $200 on this you're well aware of the fact.

That's way too much experience for a single badge. Valve are pretty cray cray.
Then again, what's more crazy, the fact that it exists, or the fact that people paid so much money for it? If the background at least stick around until next year, then maybe it might have been worth it. Either way, I got my win in the bidding war and didn't have to spend more than $3, so I'm already a happy camper. :)

Holy shit, thanks, now i have a new desktop background! :3

Is participating in the auction event even worth it?

Behold the Steam Elite, these people are willing to pay +$500 for a temporary profile skin and a badge:
http://steamcommunity.com/auction/item/1890-2014-Holiday-Profile
Only the top 100 Elite will have that badge at the end of the sale... I know, their money, their problem, but wow...
