This explains why the giveaways are filled with "Thanks!" comments that get in the way of any other conversation! I think I'm finally starting to understand this site...

Commenting doesn't increase your chances at all, people spam "Thanks" so that their comment count is high and they look like good community member. A lot of groups have a 1 Comment:1 Entry requirement.

there was a giveaway with a description that said: Say muffin / cupcake and not thanks!

and people still say thanks, it just tells me that people are inactive and i know how i am going to do my next giveaway

I just explained how people here think and why they are doing the things they do, of course it's stupid, but it started, it won't stop anytime soon. The only problem is that people care about comment counts, you shouldn't be able to see it, then people wouldn't spam, they would either say something "worthwhile" or not, they wouldn't mindlessly spam.

Comment section is actually very poor place to have a conversation in the public side. Currently, site does not inform you if someone replies to your comment which makes it very hard to keep track on discussion.
