What's the best games you've played thus far, in terms of the in-game story?

How the story in the game touched you emotionally, or mentally, such as games that might make you went mindf*cked like The Walking Dead? or games that have touched you emotionally, even made you cry? :p

These games focus on the stories rather than the gameplay itself. Some might even argue these games are not worthy to be called games because they're just too focused on stories, etc.

Share us your pick. It doesn't always have to be those AAA title games, there are lots of games i'm sure you can recommend, indie for example.

So, what's your pick? :D
I appreciate all of your recommendations. :)

+1 on dragon age origins! Excellent storyline. Couldn't wait to finish the game to see how it all played out. It was like reading a totally amazing book that you just can't put down, lol.

I must disagree with Homefront. Beginning of the story is nice but other than that. Useless. Just some cover up for a multiplayer game

...what? Give us an example of a game that is too focused on story to be considered a game. Besides the obvious Dear Esther, which lacks in both gameplay and story.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but i saw such comments were made from GOTY votings etc. It's just some people's opinions and perspective. I don't think it that way.

what about visual novels?

Visual novels seem like a bit of a gray area, but it's obviously debatable either way.

Mmmm I'd argue that visual novels are more like interactive books than actual games, personally. I think of them as very similar to the famed Choose Your Own Adventure series.

Heavy Rain. Fahrenheit to some degree. In the days of yore some FMV games were focusing om a story way too much. Basically all QTE games focus more on a story rather on a gameplay.

Fahrenheit? Really? The game started out great, but through the end it got dumber and more fucked up than infamous ME3 ending.

These were the examples of games that are too focused on a story. Whether the story is good or bad is irrelevant.

That's a bit of a weak argument though. Presentation plays a huge part in making a good story.

Seriously think about the story of itself, not the background one. It's rather weak isn't it?

You're basically asking me to consider whether I think a hamburger is a good hamburger without the burger. The answer in such a case is obviously no since I don't have a complete hamburger.

See it as asking you if a perfect looking $1 hamburger tastes good. It looks splendid, delicious, but is the inner part really that good?

Shank 2, nice one. As for story, if you want heavy focus then try some Visual Novels. There's a ton of Japanese VNs with english patches out there, and quite a lot of them have great story.

Otherwise, I quite enjoyed the plot in Bastion, Home achieved its goal in making me think up my own interpretation, Braid was quite similar with a hint of uncovering a hidden truth.

Was much more, but that's all I can list off the top of my head.

I'm a bit of a point-and-click adventure junkie, so I'd throw The Longest Journey and Dreamfall in the discussion. I've heard good things about Monkey Island and Broken Sword, but I'm still working my way through both of them.

The Portal and Half-Life definitely qualify too as a modern classics.

For non-PC games, I quite enjoyed the Yakuza series and Ni No Kuni from Playstation and most things Zelda from Nintendo.

Permalink

Yes, point-and-click is very much welcome. I enjoy these kind of games too. Console games are nice too, many are certainly qualified to be here, but then again, they're console exclusive.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm the opposite. I've been a HUGE fan of Monkey Island and Broken Sword since I was 12, but I've always been extremely reluctant to give The Longest Journey a try because I heard that the series ends on a cliffhanger (apparently they planned to make a final game to tie the loose ends, but they never did?). I don't want to get emotionally invested in a story and then be left without a real ending :/

Yes, that's a downside to TLJ for sure. However, fans of the series have some hope because Mr. Tornquist has recently announced the opening of Red Thread Games to work on the long-awaited Dreamfall Chapters. :D
