I idled 15 accounts today for 10 hours straight, I got 0 items on all accounts... I run textmode, I did connect.

Did anyone else idling, get their items this week? I will try to update steam again and idle tomorrow, but this is really weird...

A quick google will reveal hundreds in your position. Latest patch essentially killed off idling. Textmode doesn't work, and you need to confirm every item drop in order to get another.

RIP Idling July 2013. Will be missed by many (especially that dude with 4,000+ accounts)...

Alas, yes.

If you have a Cray at home, no job, a high boredom threshold, and a vast amount of time on your hands, you might be able to idle those accounts in regular mode, sitting in front of the screen and clicking "ok" every time an item drops :/

For everyone else, idling is as dead as flared corduroys and Max Bygraves LPs.

The computer: 3930k, 64gb ram

  • - Runs 105 accounts simultaneously on a bi-weekly schedule (10514 = 1470 accounts per pc)*
  • - 7 virtual machines, 15 accounts per virtual machine, 105 accounts simultaneously
  • - VM resources = 6400mb ram, 1 vCpu, 3000mb pagefile

The collection: 1 collection account per 210 idlers

  • - Each VM matches up with a collection account
  • - 15 idlers on VM1, 14 days of idle = 210 friends per collection account
  • - Following each idle session VM1's idlers trade to collection1, vm2 -> collect2, etc

Immediately following collection (adapted to support collection of steam cards):

  • - Parameter to see if anything should be traded to main alt (Sir TF2)
  • - Crate deletion
  • - Autocraft metal
  • - Trade all tools, hats, miscs, etc to main alt

He was using bots to manage the idling. So, i think he's loosely saying he didn't cut corners. Last I heard, bots were also against TOS.

that's nice 5000+ accounts farming cards, Imagine all those accounts voting for summer cards that sells for 50cents each. Can get 10 cards max just for voting. 10x50c = 5$ea
5x5000 = 25000$ of card value. Not counting the item value being idled
on one side, that's 25,000$ value 5% cut from valve = 1250$. 1250$ worth of pixels, But i guess valve thinks that 85% value for the seller is too much profit from it.

i dont understand valves idiotic position on this. everything theyve done was down the path TOWARDS idling. it used to be items were tied into achievements on tf2, but then they made it so that you didnt even have to play teh game to get stuff... they actively encouraged it by changing crap... no idea why they got so butt-hurt about it after they MADE it this way...

and no i dont idle, i just think its pathetic for valve to change a perfectly fine system in order to create a system designed around rewarding idling, and then getting pissy about people doing exactly that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Rightly or wrongly, I suspect the majority of TF2 players will say "good riddance".

It's taken a long time for Valve to take action, and with idlers bringing in a lot of money for them, I can only think that they have done it for what they would see as "the good of the community", as financially this could be something of an own goal.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

nah i think it was done for pure greed... yes idling made them money through the market, but i just dont think they liked people using the steam platform as a means to gross profit... valve doesnt like to 'share' to that extent, and didnt like that people were making a lot of money through their system... so yeah, valve just didnt like to share its platform for people to make such profits. i also think so many items out there in the market from idling was cutting into their mann co store item sales as well.

yes im an OOOOLLLDD player from relatively far back, and yes, i've always hated the idling system valve created from the DAY they changed it away from achievements for items :/

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think this may be a good explanation of why. I am hesitant to agree all the way, because the "no text idle" thing could just be a bug. If it isn't fixed by next update/Thursday, then we will know it was for real. I'm interested in seeing how the economy changes, if at all.

Metal is still pretty worthless, imo. I'd be really surprised if people with keys lowered their prices due to idling being outlawed. The demand for keys never goes down, and there is still a hefty supply of metal as well.

But I'd love it if you turned out to be right :D

I have/had three idle accounts (haven't really used them in about a year though). And imho, this is good news.
While it was nice getting extra items on them, it was also really lame.

Of course... now this just means there will soon be TF2 idle bots. :-\
At least each instance will be using slightly more resources than before, so... some amount of discouragement.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If so, I doubt it will take long for Valve to ban bot accounts.

Despite there being no official acknowledgement, they've signalled their intentions with the new patch, and any attempts to circumvent it are likely to be countered one way or another, and probably in the sort of emphatic way which will dissuade others from attempting to get around the restrictions.

no its not... whut? in order to idle you have to 'buy' tf2 (cant be a free account) so no.. not a 'fake' person, but a real one who has paid for the right to use the system valve created. valve is just getting pissy that people have made the system work for THEM... basically valve "didnt like the game, so they changed the rules", as it were :D

oh, yeah, "buy" tf2. i remember that. cost me 0,74 cents. pretty pricy.

You had to add steam wallet funds, minimum 5 dollars/5 euro to buy something in teh store. Either that, or buy premium gifts for what? 3 euro each?

Permalink

The 5$ minimum doesn't apply in some countries, for legal reasons I believe. Many people outside the US could make accounts premium by spending the absolute minimum in the store.

Permalink

Doesn't matter if it's a cent, they paid, they bought the right to the games license and are entitled to use said game same as anyone else.

Comment has been collapsed.

First, I wasn't even disagreeing with you, just correcting the person I replied to who (falsely) believed all idle accounts cost 5$ minimum and that the person he replied to couldn't have bought the game for .74 cents.
Second, Valve has in no way removed the ability to use the game on those accounts. "Buying" the game entitles you to play the game, and nothing has changed in that regard. Your purchase does not entitle you to any item drops whatsoever. Valve could remove drops completely, and you'd still own the game and be able to play all you want

I have a trio of idle accounts that I use to get more metal to craft hats and / or weapons. That's it. I don't buy games or keys with them. I get about 2 ref a week so it's not like I'm making money with this.

That guy with over five thousand accounts... yeah that's quite excessive. But idling for small amounts, I don't see that as being "wrong".

This past update changed quite a bit. Textmode idling is broken. Weapons drop need to be confirmed and placed in the backpack before you can receive additional drops. Still unsure whether playing on LAN affects anything. This doesn't exactly kill idling, just forces idlers to be more creative. If anything, I feel as if this hurts the casual player who either can't consistently play 10 hours a week for their drops and idled for some of them, or the players who play on servers where you don't die (i.e. Jump servers) since they may never even see the notification of a new drop unless they're looking for them

I love it too but no, it's not back to just playing the game for fun now. There are no games out there right now that are even remotely popular that are to be just played for fun. Every game nowadays has dumb unlocks and achievements to give gamers a false sense of accomplishment and to give people who have been playing longer an unfair advantage towards newer players. That advantage should come from skill and experience in a game, not getting more powerful weapons.

What if I idle by just using my main account (I made an extra one a while back but haven't used it in a hundred days), only to get trading cards? I'm not cheating the system am I? I just let the game run for an hour or two while I sleep, and play it later...

Anyways, I think it's a good thing that they are going to ban people using thousands of accounts just to get items... Anyone doing that is cheating to get stuff and money... It's one thing if you do what I do and only idle on one account for a couple of hours, and it's completely different if you use thousands all the time...
