Not sure I'll have the points to enter, nor do I want to snag it from somebody who knows they want it.

My question is simple: this game looks like a Mass Effect-type game. Is that correct?

Not really.

You don't have any special powers or gain experience or anything.

You can purchase/find and equip different skills that increase your health, damage, etc. and upgrade weapons, but that's about it.
