You know what could have helped? Steam Guard and a G-mail account. Steam Guard sends a code to your email when you want to log in to a new PC and your G-mail sends a code to your mobile when you want to log in from a new PC. (2 step verification).

EDIT: Sorry, this has been said...

Interesting part: why did not his antivirus alarm, when the trojan executeable was downloaded?

I'll let you know that there are some hacker tools that can easily steal all your accounts at once with no antivirus detecting them. Those steal the cookies and very few even have the tools to do that. So in my opinion these 2-step verifications that Steam and G-mail provide are the best. Also being careful on the internet, does help.

+1

In this case, almost every antivirus warned about this file...
Okay, he will get back his account, but I hope he did not get any reprisal from Valve for willing/trying to use a hack like that...

Problem is there are also false positives to worry about. Most people don't have the time to do research if it's a real threat or not. You just have to be careful what you download. Most websites that download drive by trojan gets blocked by antivirus so it's most likely something the OP downloaded, something related to steam.

An interesting question. Either some older AV or not using any.
Bitdefender even didn't let me download it, it warned me before I started the download.
and on VirusTotal nearly all AV showed up some warning

Also guys... even if you trust your antiviruses, don't try to download these kind of files. If you keep doing that, one day you will have a problem.

Steamguard is for pussies. Real men don't need no steenkin' protection...

Hope you get your account back, but for the love of Gaben make sure you enable Steamguard, and have different passwords for your Steam and email accounts :)

My friend had similar expirience. He contacted support and they asked him to provide a game key activated in his account. He provided his HIBV key and they have restored his account. Also, check your PC if it has viruses. I hope you will return your account!

Hope you're getting it back, though the hacker might go hack in some games and get your account VAC banned, that would suck.

Also it's obvious you have a some kind of virus/phishing tool so clean your pc first before trying to recover account.

Ok i had a read most of this thread and know the story behind, now i'm really not sure if Steam is gonna help you since you downloaded and used "Steam Multi Function Hack.exe", i mean sorry but that's just so stupid and it's your own fault. You dont even need antivirus for that kind of shit, just some common sense.

He hacked you ok, but what was the purpose of downloading this? You did hope this is some legit tool to hack/exploit Steam? HURP.

he could have clicked a link that was disguised as something else. or is html not possible in steam group posting?

He didn't. The file is posted just like that in the most obvious form in the group. He just went "DERP FREE GLAMESM!" and downloaded it.

"Steam Multi Function Hack.exe"? Really? You downloaded that? While I do hope you get your account back I hope you atleast take something away from this.

I almost got f***ed up like that but thankfully I was suspicious so I went on a forum in which I was pretty active back then(around a year ago) and the guys there told me that this was a phising website that would just steal my password and shit and my account would probably get hacked back then my library was worth like 150-200$ but right now it's worth $1531.85 (that is what a steam library calculator thingy says) so I'm really cautious with such websites and link which say free steam games and stuff..

My friend had this happen to him too..I told him to NOT get too excited and hack mw2 sadly since we played it back then. But he ended up downloading some hack that claimed to be i think an ingame hack and some random asain girl ended up taking his account. He ended up getting it back when he took a picture of his steam keys since he got the games on cd and they gave it back but he lost it again to the same girl lol. In the end he got it back after removing the virus he downloaded from the website so if you are going to get it back, you should focus on removing the virus that got your account hacked in the first place or it can happen again.
(long story short) friend got hacked lost his account over a stupid ingame hack, he got it back but lost it again and only ended up getting his account back after he deleted the virus he downloaded and submitting a ticket)

Hey man, first off sorry about the account; this happened to me a long time ago (before SteamGuard existed) and it was one of the most horrible experiences of my life. In my case they got my e-mail address then got my Steam details from that, so first thing to do is make sure your e-mail is secure and enable 2-step verification or some other kind of mobile phone security system.

I remember contacting Steam support, I had to provide details of a transaction I had made through Paypal, you can view your transaction history. Give them the date, transaction ID, all that kind of stuff.

Also state a rough time period (if you can remember) of when the account changes were made. I said between the hours of around 12pm and 3pm or something along those lines - so they can check when your profile details were changed and verify your identity.

Along with that give details of previous friends on your list (again hopefully you'll remember their profiles and leave links on the support ticket).

Another piece of information you could provide is your IP address, if you use one computer with a static IP or maybe haven't had your IP changed in a while then you could give them that and say any other IP addresses associated with your account could be fraudulent. You can find your IP here: WhatIsMyIP

The final piece of information I gave to them was a screenshot of a Google cache of my profile link. When the thief changed my account details they changed the profile ID and custom URL, I Googled for my account and took a screenshot of what my profile was like before it got stolen.

I have taken the liberty of doing this for you and here is a link - though I am unsure as to how much help this will give you but again the more information you can give the quicker support will resolve the issue. Cached Profile

As stated above I am sorry to hear about your account and I genuinely hope you get it back soon, and definitely be more careful in future. And remember, nothing in this world is free.

Getting hacked with steamguard on is impossible unless you download a keylogger like Silly bird.So don't worry guys.Just never share your email with anyone and have a long password on email and steam. Also it would help to have a good anti virus , anti spyware , no script addon for browser and firewall.

Hope you get your acc back.

Well that sucks... I should probably go through and start changing my passwords... And I think I will run a boot time scan with Avast!... All this stuff on accounts getting hacked is starting to scare me... It's a good thing I don't need to go to sites to find free Steam games...

sometimes, people like SillyBird needs that lil' kick in the butt to learn their lesson.

if you got your steam account hacked with steamguard enabled, then sorry, it's your brain.exe which failed here - the most underused antivirus tool btw. and dat "FREE GAMES MUST HAVE BECAUSE I'M GULLIBLE AND DL ANY EXE AS LONG AS IT PROMISES ME TO DO ILLEGAL STUFF" adittude was just asking for it...it's like giving anonymous your e-mail with the password "aaaaaa" and saying "prove me wrong jerks". (btw, on my "to-do before i'm 30"-list.)

but i'm not quite sure, if SillyBird actually got his/her account hacked...he/she asked for hacking "your hacker's" e-mail...could be anybody's e-mail, if you ask me.

and also SillyBird now is suspended from SG...

i never got hacked anywhere, btw.
