Hello !

I was asking myself a simple question - and that may sound silly, but good x_x "- but ... If I take the Season Pass of a game, do I have to buy the DLC on the side or are they included in it? I had trouble understanding how the so-called Season Pass works...

It depends on the publisher mate. Most publisher gives all the DLCs in the season pass some just give main story based DLCs and other cosmetic DLCs as purchasable. So it's good to look into the DLCs list and see what season pass offers before buying.

Yup and one more thing, Publishers always tend to release a Full edition or GOTY edition which has all DLCs. Ex Bethesda games which releases a full version after a year or so. That buying the season pass if you have base game is costlier than buying GOTY edition. In these cases it is advisable to wait and buy but ofcourse if you too excited or the game is good then you can spend but if you are just interested then wait for the complete version.

Depends on the game but the general understanding among gamers is that a Season pass should include all DLC that exist.
Some Season passes like Borderlands 2 are incomplete and there are additional DLC you have to buy if you want everything.

I guess this difference in expectations is why some developers have changed the name from Season pass to Year _ pass or something similar to make it more clear that NOT all current and future DLC are included.

So basically you have to look at the store page of the Season pass you wanna know about and check the description what DLC are included because there is no general answer for that question.

Might be only Ubisoft who does that. I know Division 2 has a Year 1 pass rather than a Season pass and if I'm not mistaken Rainbow Six: Siege is already at their Year 3 pass :D

Some do multiple season passes as well (taking the term in a literal sense, I suppose). Tekken 7 is one, off the top of my head.

The reason BL2 season pass doesn't include all DLC is it was one of the first games to sell a "season pass" and there was no default definition yet. BL2 also produced DLC for like 3 years which was also new. Pretty much the only exception.

Pretty much the only exception.

As you said pretty much but there are a couple more. The only other one I can remember right now is Bioshock Infinite Season pass which does not include Columbia's Finest. (contrary to the Complete Edition and BioShock: The Collection)

And there is also the case of Tekken where it doesn't say anything and they just add a new pass around one year later...

(Like the case with Bordenlands 2, I suppose)

It depends how greedy the publishers/devs are. Some Season passes includes ALL future DLCs, some only DLCs released within a year, some season passes just cover 3 future DLCs out of 5 future DLCs being made. Yes, read everything especially what it includes. If you're unsure, write in and ask in the Steam Discussion Forum. If not post the link to the Season pass you're unsure about here and I am sure the community will love to help clear your doubts. Cheers, Cruse~
