I really liked it as a child, I appreciate it even more as an adult.
One thing which is interesting to consider - how long was he really trapped in that day?
The original script made it clear that he was trapped for many thousands of years; he would enter the library each day and read a single page of a single book, and before the end of the film he had read every book in the library. When they started making the film, they had a vague idea of the figure of 10,000 years...
Even for the final version, the director said that less than 10 years would be completely impossible, and around 40 would be more realistic - and the writer said more like a whole lifetime, or something like 100 years.
It adds an extra dimension to the film when you wrap your head around that...
