Just noticed that Steam lists Star Wars Outlaws as a TOP SELLER. Found that a tad hard to believe and checked numbers: barely above 2k player peak on Steam 3 days after release here and owner estimates somewhere around 4 to 6k copies. Top seller indeed. So with Steam using such manipulative advertising, do you believe any of their displayed rankings?

Steam rankings are...

real
unreal v7
just paid advertising

Never cared about that category, if I already know the game, I have a rough estimate how much I'd pay for it in the future. If a game I don't know is a best seller, I check it out, decide to ignore-wishlist-postpone, and move on with my day :)

Good strategy, not paying much attention to it either just occasionally checking how a game I have an interest in is doing or games that are somewhat controversial.

If I'm not wrong TOP SELLER shows sales in last 12 or 24 hours.

You're correct, it's already way off the list. Likely what happened on release moment a bunch of people buy it to leave a quick review to bait for awards and then refund. Just going through some accounts that have under 2 hours rarely does someone still have it in their inventory anymore.

Imo steam should delete those reviews. Also there seems to be a bug that doesn't show "refunded" in the review for some people, yet they have a review for it. Not sure how they got around it.

There's no big sale going on this week and I'm not aware of any other major release right now so wouldn't 6k be considered a good seller? I actually have no clue about these things, just guessing.

it's really a bad game to make comparisons, on the one hand it's AAA, big franchise big publisher on the other hand it is a delayed release on Steam. Which is why it struck me as odd, not expecting it to sell overly much.

Counter-Strike 2 as 1st, then S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 it is definitely a regional thing as Counter Strike is very popular in Romania (also most of the games are free)

It's regional, just change your language on Steam and you can already see the difference. I remember when I switched the language to Japanese and Spanish and clearly saw two different trends in those 2 countries.

I don't think it's Steam's fault, it's just how their algorithm show games on the front page, using a lot of parameters. They have to display some games, don't they?
I don't even think they get paid by someone to display some games other than others.
And in the end, if that's even true, it's up to the player to decide the amount of research they have to do before a purchase of a game.

Well when csgo changed to cs2 it was still on top. The game was broken full of crashes, freezes. Also 40% reduction in number of online players but it was still on stop. So i dont trust steam from that day till today.

Just sharing experience.

The global list lists the games based on revenue, so that is absolutely possible that CSGO is there. It's in the top 100 for 641 weeks, currently #1

Yes that would explain a lot as despite the 25% or so launch discount it still has AAA pricing vs much cheaper indie titles, so 1 copy of this might equal 10 of some smaller indie game.

steam wont let you review steam products on steam anymore cause its bad for sales.

No reason not to trust it. It probably sold north of 10k copies and is expensive game which is more than enough to be around 20th place on top sellers list.

@snow0815: so if i get you right, in your opninion this game cant be in top 100? in other words you believe there are at least 100 other games that got sold in the current week more often then a star wars (!!!) game that just came out? O.o

Well if you look at it that way, sure. I'm sure Skyrim is still in that category. Just the presentation suggests it's super hot and selling like hot cakes when there are are hardly any owners. I can only assume the scrolling stuff and trending placement are sponsored options to feature games more prominently.

It has just being released on steam, since it was on Ubisoft only before. It makes sense it's selling, at least over most normal releases.

I mean, probably even Veilguard also sold a lot the first 24 hours.

Just to clarify (as I can't seem to edit the original post: SWO was listed in that top, scrolling category with an actual TOP SELLER tag as well as showing second in the new and trending category lower on the main page. It's been 3 days and no matter what standards you apply a few thousand copies sold doesn't strike me as top anything. Which is kind of sad as I actually used to like both UBI games and Star Wars stuff.

2k concurrent players isnt the same as 2k copies sold lol, it's probably 10k+ and since it's just been released yeah of course it will be in top selling. just because there arent a lot of other releases right now. that being said, it's not showing up in my top sellers list

Few thousands... SOLD?

You know theres a big difference between sold/owners and concurrent players right?
If bob plays in the morning, Ted at night, and Sally play on tuesdays when neither bob nor ted play- theyre all counting as '1' concurrent player (when theyre playing)

Concurrent NEVER gets even close to owners. Not even major breaking record hits like Wukong or Baldurs 3 on release day or first weekend- its always, ALWAYS a very very small fraction of total purchases. Even if every buyer was playing every day for a week and if only half of them were playing like less then the entire day, were talking 41 time zones in the world. Only 1 is unhibited but lets pretend 35 only were playing a game...
Anyone playing 1 hour sessions before bed will only ever show as 1/35th of the total player number
2+ hour overlaps start hapening, but still a small fraction of the total

Turns out people do have to eat, sleep, work, study, watch films, play other games. Theres people waiting for it to download, heck theres people who buy games without even having the space to install or will only touch it after their current game is finished... list goes on. Heck ive seen people who bought a game they were hyped for on launch but still played just a little because of how addicted they were to their daily online main game and their gaming buddies would miss him

Me personally between won GAs here and some of my backlog im still tackling i havent yet touched some of the latest titles im eager to play. Hi-Fi rush, Lost Eidolons... heck i bought Lost in Random on a sale, installed it, still some slots down my current queue

Anyway concurrent seems to fall way bellow a 10th of total owners. Wukong sold over 20 million copies (last official report, number definetly increased) yet it peaked at just over 2m.

Then theres all the other platforms, and the fact most people hyped for it got it on uplay because it wasnt on steam. I did that twice btw, i bought Fenyx and Ac Valhalla from uplay because they werent on steam at the time- therefore i havent bought then again on steam

If I recall correctly Steam calculates top seller ranking by the dollars people spent on that instead of the copies being sold. Judging that Star Wars Outlaws is "AAAA game" (at least in price lol) with premium pricing, people spend way more on them, making them appear higher.
This also explains why Steam Deck is soo high up every time

That explains it, I was thinking units sold but it's highly priced so that would boost it, and as some pointed out, no juicy sales right now so poor competition.

Thanks for the replies folks, you made some excellent points.❤️ I think I just had a wrong idea of the way Steam calculates top sellers. And being part of the rotating title lineup on top in all likelhood is just a paid thing, the same way you pay google to list you at the top of search results.👍

You can't directly pay for advertising on Steam. To get a front page banner advertising slot, developers first have to meet certain revenue targets with their game to earn credits that they can then spend on those slots.

in the US store, when you go to top sellers it clearly states by revenue. I don't think there's any conspiracy there. https://store.steampowered.com/charts/topselling/US

Top Sellers
Top 100 selling games right now, by revenue

You can switch to different countries in the drop down menu to see what games are doing well in other countries. It's interesting.

i believe steam sale numbers are legit, the reviews in games are the ones that are not always trustworthy.
i personally never decide what game to buy by sales and reviews, i always check some before you buy and gameplay videos to make up my mind if i like something enough to buy at a high price.

Not really no. And people should learn not to trust. Everyone addicted like crack to their cell phone which monitors everything they do.
In homage to "The Police".
Every search you make.
Every step you take.
Every single day.
Every game you play.
They are watching you.
Seriously. Every single search, every single purchase and download. Everywhere you go with your phone on you. It's collecting data and selling it to everyone interested. There are ways to limit some of it but I'm not sure there is any way whatsoever to stop all of it short of physically removing the battery and I'm not even sure that is possible with most cell phones these days. How do you think most criminals get caught these days? Their cell phone.

The title brought me here and I instantly thought about recent Gaben talk.

"Games are not property of players. Players are only renting them for money" (more or less)

If you ask if I trust steam... what to say, we all expected it.

It's just in the 22nd position right now, nothing special.
Besides reasons others already mentioned, you also ignore that it is a single-player game (so no reason for anyone to immediately start playing).
And it's very likely a very welcome gift candidate for Christmas. So people purchase it now and others receive it in a month.

Because it's been trashed all the way since release and if youtubers made jokes about it and there were memes and all... well that means it should not sell at all. Otherwise it means all the influencers... only influence the people whose lips are glued to their... channels and all?
Heresy! We all believe the same thing, it's a known fact.
