Just noticed that Steam lists Star Wars Outlaws as a TOP SELLER. Found that a tad hard to believe and checked numbers: barely above 2k player peak on Steam 3 days after release here and owner estimates somewhere around 4 to 6k copies. Top seller indeed. So with Steam using such manipulative advertising, do you believe any of their displayed rankings?

It's just because the game came out on steam a couple days ago. Every new AAA game tops the steam charts when it comes out, even if it sucks

I think Steam is run by a bunch of engineers primarily, not marketing people. The fact that we can even see concurrent player numbers the way we can is a sign of that. Anyone who was into marketing would scream at the top of their lungs that it's a terrible idea to expose that sort of information.

Maybe the algorithm picking up what games to feature in Top Sellers is poorly written, but I don't think for a second that they are manipulating it directly on a title by title basis.

It's a AAA game with one of the biggest IPs in the world, I'm not sure what's so hard to believe it's a top seller. None of that changes because of a bunch of pissed off people on the net being vocal about it. Hell a lot of these people doing it likely don't really care about any of it.

They just like to believe they make the world go round and that "go woke, go broke" is an actual thing.

Beyond making a lot of sense given how that feature works, if people buy something for being in the top seller, can you really blame it on the store or the buyer?
I would find it pretty stupid to buy something just because it is being bought a lot. One either has interest or not, if you do, you'll check gameplay and reviews if you are smart, anything else, I would say is in the buyer's fault.

Feels like a good addition to this topic. Pretty telling that publishers are, contrary to the suggestion that Steam would cheat to benefit publishers, upset because Steam is actually too precisely telling everyone how their titles perform.

I hope they don't remove it.
