Hello and welcome to the madness!
The challenge is simple: Recommend 1 Book/Movie/Show that you enjoyed.
To clarify, you only need to make one recommendation in any category

The prize: Slime Rancher 2

Length and age do not matter. So long as you recommend something, I'm happy. You can go easy mode and pick something popular or go crazy and recommend something super obscure. So long as you genuinely enjoyed it, it is all good.

Just post a comment with your recommendation and you are good to go. Feel free to share your thoughts on why you made the recommendation, but it is not required.

FAQ:

Why you doing this?

I hate money. That and I'm not going to be here for the second half of the month and I didn't want to stop the count with an awkward pause.

I've only watched the first 5 minutes/read the first page and thought it was the best thing ever, can I pick it for the event?

I guess. Not sure why you would, but you do you.

Can I pick something that's not in English?

Of course. The world is a big place and I'm sure there are subtitles/translations. If not, share anyways.

Why only 1 recommendation?

My book backlog is almost as bad as my steam one and I'm no better with shows/films. I want to at least convincingly lie to myself that I'll be able to make a good effort with the recommendations made here.

Wait, if you're not here to give us the link, how can I join?

You can find the link here.

If we can just join, what is the point of making a recommendation?

Only a monster would do that. And you're not a monster right? Don't break my heart D:

This event "ends" on November 1st when the next HB Choice releases, though the giveaway itself will end the next day. If you manage to make a recommendation in between that time, feel free to post, but know that I can guarantee that you'll be able to join the giveaway in time.

Good luck, have fun and stay safe.
Thanks for reading, and know that I won't be checking my emails.

I'll always recommend Tamora Pierce, if you are looking for a children's/young adult fantasy author. My favourite books growing up were by her!

If people haven't seen it already... The Thing (1982).

One of the best films ever made. Easily in my top 3. 👍

Yeah so many great Sci Fi films from the late 70s to 90s!

I put off watching this movie for so long because of the name... Definitely worth the watch.

Absolutely, and just great films in general. A lot of film experts like to shit on the 80's, and there was a bunch of trash, but it gave us a lot of classics too. The 70's are where it was at though. Unbeatable IMO, and I wasn't even alive! Just pick a random well-known actor from those 2 decades and look at what they did. Jack Nicholson is a great example.

PS - Check out Slither if you haven't already. A fan of The Thing should enjoy it.

Thanks for the rec!
I'll check it out :)

Yeah I must say my fave movies are from these decades - Alien, Terminator, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Predator, Die Hard, Fifth Element... Less need to rec all these though as most people probably have seen them :D

Talking about Jack Nicholson.. reminds me of The Departed. That's been a fave as well.
Similarly from the 90s/00s : Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Trainspotting..

No problem. If you watch it and want to share your thoughts, you know where to find me. :)

Both Alien (and Aliens) and Die Hard were in my mind as I was typing my last comment. I don't think about The Terminator as much as I should. The first two are definitely great. Tremors is another amazing one from around that time; usually sits in my top 5. I think it's a perfect movie.

I haven't read much lately, but a book I remember fondly from my high school days is Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

Book: The Little Prince – not a very sophisticated choice, but it was the first book I read as a child, hence I have a great fondness for it.
Movie: Oldboy (2003) – the entire Vengeance Trilogy is a must-watch, but Oldboy impressed me the most.
Show: Skins

I too, love your picks!

Though gotta say, I didn't enjoy anything skins past season 2. Watched s3-s4, gave up afterwards, returned for s7, but nothing really lived up to the first two. I am unsure if I am in the majority or in the minority with this opinion as I have never read discussions about this show.

On a very slightly related note (I think originally same channel aired it): check out Misfits, I only saw the first season but it was rather good.

Nothing wrong with the Little Prince. And it is definitely a sophisticated choice.

I was looking forward to another month of backlog busting, but I did renew Gamepass this month so focusing on that this month will probably be better.

Book: Greatest Works of Edgar Allan Poe - I didn't read all of them of course, but it was interesting to check some out here and there and go from "What the heck am I reading" on some to being able to actually feel the impact of actual poetry on others.
Movie: Pineapple Express - what can I say, it's a funny adventure.
Show: Attack on Titan - this show broke anime into the mainstream and is finally concluding a decade later.

Enjoy your time away and thank you for this community event!

Book: Greatest Works of Edgar Allan Poe

I actually have his entire collection and I've memoried a few of his poems. Granted, I am an English major who at one point was planning on going into academia, so it shouldn't be too surprising :p.

Fantastic! I am an engineer and did not enjoy anything related to writing in school, but what I read of this book really changed my outlook because I could appreciate the effect good writing can achieve.

Ok, let us do two movies which aren't too obscure, but not too mainstream either. I will be pretty vague about the descriptions so you can go in and watch them fresh if you wish.

  1. Dark City (1998) is a great movie, with a very "noir" aesthetics and a very cool story. The director's cut is better (it deletes an initial 30-second initial monologue, so you can learn plot details as you go), but it is still a very good movie in the theatrical version.
  2. Paprika (2006) is an incredibly creative Japanese animation, just watch that trailer. It explores themes similar to the ones in "Inception" (there is at least one scene that Inception copied from this, the second one in the trailer). Genius.

Paprika is legit a 10/10, honestly anything by Satoshi Kon is worth a watch. Fun fact, it's not the only time his content has been "borrowed" Black Swan took inspiration from his film Perfect Blue.

There is this superb Youtube video from Every Frame a Painting which taks about Satoshi's editing in a very clear way that even I could understand... If you have not seen it by any chance, you will totally love it..:) It does contain scenes from all his work, so it is slightly spoilerish, and it shows some of the "borrowed" scenes from Inception, Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream, side by side. Great stuff.

I'm not one for books but I have an almost endless supply of recommendations for movies and shows stuffed deep in my soul, it's nice to let them out sometimes.

Movie: Climax French film about dancing, drugs and people. Gaspar Noe makes fever dreams and it's a pretty neat one.

Show: Wonder Showzen Parody of children's TV, offensive and hilarious. If you've ever found Sesame Street or similar unintentionally funny then this is for you.

I really enjoyed The Haunting of Bly Manor. It's a different story from it's critically acclaimed predecessor, The Haunting of Hill House, but I well and truly enjoyed the story it told and would recommend it highly.

I don't know why this one got such a bad reception when compared to Hill House. It was brilliant and hauntingly tragic.
I guess people liked Hill House for the jump scares mostly I dunno

My guess? People were expecting more of the same. Personally, I much preferred the quiet, subdued horror of Bly Manor over the more active and direct horror of Hill House.

Also, happy cakeday!

I admit I loved both series for different reasons but what resonated with me most in Hill House was the human dimension to the story and that was what I loved in Bly Manor too.
I tend to prefer my horror understated so Bly Manor's tragic gothic horror was more to my taste too. A creepy whisper in the dark is more chillng than a scream, imo.

Thanks :)

this is just the most recent stuff i've "consumed" and liked--

Book: The Last Days of New Paris by China Mieville

Movie: Event Horizon (rewatched for the first time since I was a kid, it's on Paramount Plus in the US right now.)

Show: Little Demon (animated show found on Hulu. i rolled my eyes when i saw the synopsis cos Lucy Daughter of the Devil was years ago on Adult Swim, but this is actually a p funny show and worth watching if you like adult cartoons.)

Bonus: Editors full set at the Hear Hear Festival on the 14th of August 2022 on youtube just cos i'm watching it right now and enjoying the lead singer being a freaky little goblin on stage.

i don't really care about the game so i'm not entering the gib, but i'm contributing reccs anyway cos participation makes my brain go ding or something.

enjoy your vaycay, CJ.
