VIII?

Well, I guess it isn't XII at least. If not for the enemy level scaling and Gil paychecks, I might have enjoyed it.

8 was pretty, but not any fun
7 was fun, but ugly as sin
10 was pretty and fun, but totally linear
12 was more open, but lost any coherence of plot

Iunno, mang. Final Fantasy really doesn't click with me. The only games from the (main) series that I really enjoyed were V and IX due to the fact that I wasn't pressured to feel an emotion like in IV and VII for example.

I enjoyed V, X and for some reason, XIII, myself. X had the best battle system, V had awesome characters that I cared about (Gilgamesh). XIII I also enjoyed the battle system.

How did X have the best battle system? It wasn't expansive as V's and XII's battle system.

Comment has been collapsed.

Best because I enjoyed it. I can't stand the ATB system, so V is bad for that (though everything else was great), and XII had a boring battle system as well, and didn't even have story and characters to save it. The CTB system used in FFX I found enjoyable enough that I spent over 200 hours on saves for that game, playing the International release. Managed to beat all but Dark Yojimbo and the boss fight after the Dark Aeons.

That one was awful.

Sorry, it had to be said.

However, while I can't stand the game, there is a fan patch a friend of mine is doing, adds more challenge to the game. You might want to wait for the public release. Its in final testing now, just the testers doing a full run.

Info about it here

Comment has been collapsed.

Why do you consider it awful? My own opinion aside, it's one of the most critically acclaimed FFs in the franchise (tying with VII in critical praise).

Honestly, I'm itching to get in another FF argument ;)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

My first problem with the game is the ATB system. Of all the games using this battle system, I only enjoyed V, and I enjoyed that for the characters, story and class system choices more than the fights. Unless they were Gilgamesh fights...

Past that were the characters, most of them unfortunately didn't hit it off with me (Cyan being the only exception). The story also didn't draw me in, and I had to force myself to pay as far as I did (reached the World of Ruin no less than 3 times, not sure how many times I played without reaching that far).

Basically, a lot more for me to dislike than enjoy in most of the games of the series. It is a shame. I've owned almost every main game in the series and several spinoffs, but only enjoyed four, three of which I named earlier in the topic, the last being Dirge of Cerberus.

So it was more personal opinion than the game simple being "awful" as in your previous post. I may not agree, but I respect your opinion.

Personally, I felt the exact opposite on most points. I've actually been replaying FFV over the past week and hate its implementation of ATB, though mostly for the "pausing" issue with the timer and the inability to skip to another active character without acting in some way. As for Gilgamesh... yeah, Gilgamesh :P

To the class system, the change from universal (and redundant) class to archetypical characters (Locke>Thief, Strago>Blue Mage, etc.) with universal magic access gave the individual characters more depth and personality and seemed a natural franchise progression (with FF9 being the odd man out leaning back to FFIV-style strict class-characters). I can't tell you how many times in V, when I knew a boss was coming up, I'd switch everyone to monk and be done in a couple "rounds".

For the characters it felt like they were a little more generous with the character story events, but you had to find them in the World of Balance (similar to Bartz's Music Box and the Tycoon Castle events). When it came to the World of Ruin, these events were directly tied (in most cases) to the re-recruitment of your party, though most characters had some additional events to be found later. For story, I dunno, it just felt like FFV was constantly rushing; FFVI was definitely slower.

System-story wise, two things in FFV upset me that weren't present in FFVI. First was the "get ship/chocobo, move 5 squares, lose ship, clear one dungeon, get new ship/black chocobo" that repeated constantly through the first world; it felt completely unnecessary. Second, was the negation of Galuf's sacrifice by giving Krile his exact stats/gear/levels and adding her to your party immediately; giving you "rule 63 Galuf" just took all of the significance out of his death.

General story, I'll say this: the only FF stories I hated were FFX/-2, FFTA/12 (12 mostly because it's a continuation of Tactics Advance/A2) and FF13/-2/Type-0 (and now -3 and vs. are coming -_-). Every other FF (including 11) had at least a good story. V was great, but as I stated earlier it just felt rushed.

All in all, however, this is opinion more than anything. I was mostly seeing if you'd pop up with the sadly stereotypical "FF7 is best coz Sephiroth!!1!" argument ;)

Again, I wouldn't say VII was awful. But between the magic stat bug, flat main character, mama's boy villain, and "first of a generation" syndrome, it's not the messiah of Final Fantasys that many fans make it out to be :)

Yeah, really not likely. VII and VIII were both released on PC at that time, and would require minimal work to get working under newer operating systems. The others would need to be done from scratch for PC.

Yeah, I know. My PS2 died a noble death and the only possibility is to emulate a PS2. Problem with the emulation is: it is not very mature.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'd suggest taking another look at emulating 10 at the very least. Use PCSX2 1.0.0 (r5350) with the correct roms and make a 1 to 1 iso of the disks then it runs spot on with a decent PC. I've had no trouble playing through the whole game a month or so ago.

Cool, an extremely over-hyped FF and very likely the worse FF.

Don't bother getting FF 6 or 9 unto Steam. It's not like those two are leagues better or anything. /sarcasm

Read above. VII and VIII were released for PC way back when. The only others that is true for are the MMO titles.

Would be pretty hard to release SNES and Playstation games for Steam without emulation wouldn't it?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not at all. Recreation of say FFIV took one man about a month to recreate from scratch in RPG Maker, and if I recall most of the time was spent recreating the proprietary sprites.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You're right about that, I just meant that it has never been ported so it's highly unlikely it will ever be, almost (or no SNES games at all? Not sure) get/got ported to PC. I think the most recent examples of old school ports have to be the Dreamcast Sonic games and Nights and so on. But that's SEGA, no one else seems to deem it necessary to bring an old game to modern PC's

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You'd be surprised. Sega has actually been pumping out ports from older consoles over the past couple years. On Steam, go to the Sega catalog and sort by price to see what I mean. With the recent retro movement, we're seeing revivals of older games, both PC and console trickling in. Considering old>modern PC revivals are usually harder to do (OpenGL rewriting, DosBox configuration/compatibility, texture tweaks/recreation, etc.) when compared to tool usage like RPG Maker, I think the only things stopping publishers are a lack of motivation, fear, and the ever present stigma of the Console-PC Barrier.

That's really neat to know, and it just gave me an idea about how awesome a mashup of all the old RPGs would be. FF meets Dragon Quest meets Zelda meets some other stuff.

I might buy FF7 at 75% off on a Steam sale. I've owned this game for years, and never got it to run well enough to play it. Then again, the control scheme of FF games always turned me off. I hope that the remake gives a nod towards the existence of a mouse.

BTW, I just noticed that the new version has "Cloud saves". Is that a pun or what? :)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

...Not because I dislike the games. But because I thought I had finally escaped their PS3 bound tyranny when I came away and yet I doubt it would be too long before I bought them on Steam. If they come out, there goes my productivity as I attempt more needless challenges. Like getting Squall to Level 100 solo at Balamb Garden at the start of the game...Oh God, endless rounds of Triple-Triad that is repetitive yet enjoyable! And 7! I can see me now morphing for hours on end in the Gelnika trying to stat max everyone, or pulling that lever in Junon trying to get people to ridiculous levels early on (I have a thing for early level maxing) or trying to get a ludicrous number of Master Materia for the hell of it. Not to mention forcing disturbingly closely related chocobos to breed to try to get one the right colour like some kind of twisted, chocobo sex nuts, racist, elitist pervert.

Please Steam, for the good of my ridiculously expensive education, give it another 2 years or so.
