When I get IX I'll be happy, nobody appreciates that game. :(

I appreciated it, but never gave it a second play after beating it. More than I can say for VIII, though. Never even beat that one. Couldn't give VII a second play either though, so there's that. XD

XI was the closest the series has ever come to the SNES games, though. Only counting numbered entries here - which leaves out games like After Years and FF Dimensions.

I would imagine Square Enix no longer has the source code for anything before Final Fantasy VII and would have to recreate the entire thing.

It's pretty much confirmed that they haven't had the final revision of the FFVII source since the original PC port. Eidos who ported it from the PSX to PC had received an older version of FFVII to port as opposed to the final that was released and it is believed that this is the cause for the increase of bugs between the versions. There was the chance that Square didn't want a third-party to have the final as this was at their peak, but the 2012 release of FFVII pretty much confirms it as there were absolutely no changes made to the main executable. If they had the source that Eidos used they could have attempted bug fixes, since they did not it almost seems as if they have absolutely no sources left.

It may sound really stupid on their behalf and unlikely, but things like this happened a lot as the world just wasn't as tech savvy as we are today.

On a side note, Square hired DotEmu for this release, I really have no clue what they did other than maybe the launcher, trainer and blatantly steal other people's work.

Wouldn't it be a Japanese thing to not archive their stuff so they had to fix a different version?

Wasn't FFVII on the registry for a couple of years at one point?
