Inspired by the A Surprise for the Literates thread I decided to do my own experiment.

I gave away two copies of Portal of Evil; the first one was a public giveaway and the second one was a private giveaway which I linked to on the first giveaway.

The results are pretty sad:

Both were giveaways were level 2 and because they were for the same game the same people were eligible for both. They ran for about three days and the public one got 1,451 entries whilst the 'private one' (which anyone who actually read the text on the public one could enter) got 28 entries.

The second one specifically asked people to leave a comment. It got 23 comments (counting only those from people who entered the giveaway).

So that part wasn't bad at all.

But only 2% of those entering the first giveaway joined the second...

And again; they were all eligible to enter the second one, both cost only 6 points so that was no factor either.

It sure proves people really don't read stuff online...

I doubt there are many bots, people using a script to enter from the main page could be a factor but I wouldn't want to hazard a guess as to what percentage of users do this.

That's actually pretty sad... I'm not sure if I even wanna make a public one anymore after seeing that.

It would be really interesting to see how many people who don't use the forums create giveaways. I'm guessing quite a few do, if just to get to level 1.

Yeah I'm always checking to see who the GA creator is in everything I enter and I'm seeing a loooooot of unfamiliar names on a daily basis, never seen them on the forums. Also note that I have my public GAs shown filtered to lvl 3-8 ones so I don't see a big amount as well. The forum dwellers are actually the minority :P

I don't. I stay away from creating or entering public giveaways, and sometimes get called out about only creating private giveaways for this reason. :P

Botting under level 6 is very, very real. The mildest estimate puts autojoin users in the five digit territory.
Also, probably the most active—and second largest—user base (and by active I mean those who enter anything and everything) comes from a country which has one of the most dreadful statistics in English skills; most of them probably lack even the most basic ability to read an English sentence. And you can count your stars that Brazil and China are far behind still, because they are also in that range. (It's funny how 3 of the 4 BRIC countries have abysmal stats in understanding English.)

What is that estimate based on?

Also; there was no need for any English comprehension whatsoever as the link on the first giveaway was a naked url leading directly to a giveaway; anyone could have recognized it as such.

Estimate was based on this: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/autojoin-for-steamgifts/bchhlccjhoedhhegglilngpbnldfcidc
The Chrome store version only lists 12k users. And this is the publicly visible, most easy to spot script/extension.

I don't know where you get your "statistics" from but personally I'm more worried about people running scripts to let them directly enter from their home page than auto joiners. At least the latter are bannable.
And in this particular case comprehension of English is not an issue. The link was an unmasked SG link, clearly indicating what it was simply by it's format. And it's a freaking blue text, I don't know how you miss that if you enter the giveaway page.

It's most likely also because of the quality of the giveaway. (Portal of Evil has been bundled and rebundled far too many times for people to still think high of the game). Of course, botting is a very real thing, hence why I assume most likely half of your entries come from those. But you have to take in consideration that you are dealing with different types of users.
1) Those who always read descriptions. (end of)
2) Those who sometimes read descriptions either because they feel like it or because the game being given away captured their attention (I'm sure a user would be much more excited when entering a GTA V giveaway rather than a Portal of Evil giveaway)
3) Those who enter giveaways mindlessly in their attempt to win something (I was like that when I started, I'm sure many others are nowadays too).
4) Bots.

Both giveaways are for the same game. So if they joined the first I don't see any reason to not join the second besides not wanting to show themselves by leaving a comment for whatever reason.

No, but what I'm saying is, when you enter a giveaway for a game like Portal of Evil, unless you are a constant reader of the description or at least an occasional reader, you are not going to check out. To give you an example, when I started off on steamgifts roughly 3 years ago, I used to hold control and open giveaways in multiple tabs, enter them, then close the tab. I can guarantee that many other people do that nowadays, skipping to read descriptions as it can be time consuming (Obviously, for group giveaways or giveaways for high tier games people are more likely to take the time to read the description out of respect.)

I'm recalling the times I entered Portal Of Evil GAs and my mindset was just like this you describe, although It's a game I want, it's also a game I mindlessly enter for.

What I noticed about GAs is that when someone says something like "don't autoreply tasteless 'thank you's, instead post a gif or tell a joke" a lot of ppl take the job of posting a gif or writing a joke.

I guess they are afraid of the reroll. Though I doubt that not complying would be a valid reason for a reroll.

It's not :P
it's mostly fear of blacklisting if you don't "comply" or on the other side it's a "green light" for posting telling you if you post anything BUT that one thing anything's welcome

Two days ago I found out about the statistics of my account. When I saw the dates and the number of ppl blacklisting me I felt a punch to my ego. even if I don't know who or why did that. I'm not a social media user but man, this hurts and I all I just see are sentences on a forum wtf with the human mind.

There's no avoiding this I'm afraid. Everyone uses his/her blacklist differently and adds people there based on their criteria. Can't please everyone. There's hundreds of people making giveaways though so a few blacklists shouldn't affect you(even more so if you didn't even realise before looking at the stats page :P )

Yup. People are irrational in so many ways.

I don't use whitelists or blacklists on here but there are plenty of permanent forum dwellers who love that stuff. It's always about petty stuff; not like anything we do here is that important in the greater scheme of things.

When I see the numbers I think they are massive: 1451 vs 28! I'm trying to come out with theories to explain, but that number is overwhelming, you know I thought we steamgifters were literate leechers man!

This morning I started a similar experiment; click my avatar for specific details.
To summarize it, it's a public level 0 giveaway with a big text saying to not comment, with a plain link to an invite-only giveaway.

So far I got:

  1. almost 1000 entries in the public GA,
    • only 35 in the "hidden" GA (3.5%);
  2. 10 comments where it was forbidden,
    • some generic thanks, some clever rebellious commenters;
  3. 60 new blacklist members (only after checking the first 200 entries).

Publics are great for experiments!
