So yesterday my cousin made it to a hundred dollars or whatever the necessary Steam account value you need to have to be allowed on SG. We'd have talked about SG and I'd teach him one thing or two, but instead we played good and old Terraria all day. We might be purple, who knows? While me and the cousin don't bear much of a physical resemblance, we are the proud heirs of grandad's colourblind daltonic Y X (Please forgive me, Godess of the colourblind!). There are many ways to see colours, so maybe someone would really see us purple :)

At least your name is only confusing to people in faraway lands: I have a name that almost nobody here in Australia knows (Soren - an old Scandinavian name, and I don't look at all Scandinavian and I have no Scandinavian ancestry). Occasionally, someone (usually with heritage from the Balkans) will ask me if it is Zoran (or just assume it is). People usually remember my name when I meet them because they almost always ask me to repeat it and often to explain it. This can make it hard for me to learn people's names when we meet. The amount of effort I go to depends on the situation. I have learnt that it is better for everyone if I just use a fake name when ordering takeaway food over the phone. I personally would consider the Steamgifts forum to be worthy of the effort required to educate because you will develop friendships here and deal with people more than once.

That is one of many variations the people of Australia have come up with instead of saying my actual name, even before the Lord of the Rings was made into films and everybody started pronouncing it sow-ron. Before that, many people pronounced Sauron as saw-ron, I guess because it is spelt similarly to sauce, so it's reasonable to assume that it sounds similar.

That's pretty much my name - mine's Cicchini, which I'm guessing is a regional variation of the same name. My dad's from a tiny town near (sort of near) Chieti in Abruzzo, Italy.
That's probably as accurate a pronunciation as there could be, but I don't think I'll ever hear it. Depending on the font, the zero in the username isn't always clearly a zero, so Chikkeeso is also a pretty good effort. Most people in Australia can't even pronounce my real name correctly, so it's not particularly important to me. I only use it because it's ALWAYS available and I already had to learn it. I'll probably change it on here when I can (after 12 months, I believe).

Because of the language difference and the cultural melting pot that is SteamGifts :).
For example across Europe you might find a name or word ending in the letter "J" but that is silent, we don't really have that in England, so I find myself saying the letter out loud separate to the word. So Andrej for example would become Andre J, that's an extreme example as I know that's not how it works, but I'm sure sometimes I get it horrifically wrong and butcher the name.
Additionally, the same thing can be said for gender within names, so "Stef" here would be exclusively used for Stephanie, however on SG it could be "Stefan" among a number of other things.
Now add to all that minefield that people make up words or use colloquial language within their usernames, or puns in their own language, I sometimes just take a total guess at the gender and/or how to say their name!

I'm familiar with Laurence as a French name; I'm guessing Laurens is pronounced quite similarly.
In the US, Lawrence (with the accent on the first syllable, as in LORE - ents, is a formal version of Larry).

As the other guys have said, it's just regional differences that guide our preconceptions. I am familiar with the name Laurence but have never seen it spelt Laurens. Lauren is a reasonably common girl's name in the English-speaking world - Hollywood superstar (1940's and 1950's) Lauren Bacall is probably the most famous one. Add that to the fact that punctuation characters are normally not allowed in usernames, and that explains why some people might make that mistake. I hope it doesn't bother you too much - there would certainly be no malice in it, and from my perspective, it is a very easy assumption to make. Anyway, you are educating Steamgifts one user at a time - how long could it take before everyone knows? ;-)

Ahh that is too bad. I'm not a huge pet person, but they are pretty cool. They were all rescued from the streets, so they just ended up with us.
I tried allergy shots for some of my own allergies, but I don't know if they do those for cat allergens. They work for a lot of people, but it's a lot of jabs, and the treatment takes a long time do, since you go back over and over.
