Just a heads up, and an idea I have for it: if you have the game from other sources (such as a retail disc, or the nether regions of the internet sea that we don't talk about), the game is still good for multiplayer. In fact, I recommend using your retail version, since it's working with Boba Fett's Ultra Utility, which is good for such essential things as minimizing your game, having an ingame playlist and music player, tracking kills/deaths/duels, and adminning things in general.
In fact, if you have one way to do so, avoid the Steam version because it's not compatible with this little awesome program.

It's a great game, i played it with friends and it was an extremely funny experience. Once we were bored enough of dueling we became friendlies and used the console to spawn enemies around the maps and try to kill them. Other times we pretended to be some kind of polite jedi's like in this clip i captured. Nonetheless, one of the best dueling games i played.

Nonsense! Jedi Outcast is better, and it still has an online community :)

Speaking from a two weeks old experience, Outcast seems to be more deserted multiplayer-wise than Academy, which is saying a lot. When I connected (was on a weekend, kind of peak time), there was only one server with about 6-10 players on it, the rest was just bots. Although I agree, singleplayer-wise it's much better than JKA, and should be played by everyone. One of my all-time favourites.

I don't understand this. Everyone here say it's great, it's awesome, but I'm not gonna play it. Why? Also, having non-steam version isn't really a valid reason, you can simply make shortcut for it in steam and play with steam overlay. Also, non-steam version is better.

If you played the xbox multi for it, you might remember one of my current clan mates from there. He went by SourNotHardcore or Psychedelic, pretty awesome guy.

I'm going to buy it someday with Republic Commando (which I want to replay), I remember playing demo of JA and enjoying it ;).
Hell, I want all SW games from Steam.

never played it, but I don't think it looks that great imo. I think i would prefer battlefront

JK2 and Jedi Academy were the best! 1v1 Duel fights were ftw!

Try the Movie Battles II mod for it, many people play that.

I used to play Academy and Outcast years ago. 1v1 duels were so much fun, and could even be intense when evenly matched.
It's been at least a good 3 years since I've tried playing either of the games online, though.. I might have to try giving it a go again sometime soon, if anyone will still be around.
We really need a new awesome Jedi Knight game to come out on PC. =(

Why the small multiplayer community... Basically it's because the community is small. Let me explain... When a game attracts only a small amount of players, these players tend to really specialize in playing it and becoming really good. This is a bad situation for anyone new coming into the game, cause they will get smacked around in any multiplayer game. Being fragged over and over usually isn't what "fun" means for most people, so they don't try getting into the game too much (usually stop trying after 15 minutes).
This is a problem for most older (5+ years) and free software games. Your best shot at having someone to play is to introduce a couple of your friends into the game and play together at least until they get a good grasp of it. Then you can let them play with the rest of the games community. Trying to get random ppl on the net to play will fail - they will feel like they hit a wall when they get 0 frags in 10 games in a row, while being constantly killed.

I can see how this can apply to most old-school games and even some new ones. If you ask me Half-Life was exactly like this. Heh, here's a good proof for ya I encountered just yesterday: clicky. That, however, never happens in Jedi Academy or Jedi Outcast.
The game is kind of balanced. There are special moves let you bomb crowded areas effectively, and they will make you a big nice target for more skilled players, but in the days I've started to play the game, even some professionals got kinda mad at not only me, but others who used those moves too. Whatever saber you use, you can beat even some more professional players with it too. This isn't Unreal Tournament, far from it actually.
Then, what you say about these closed-in communities... it's just not appliable to this game, again. The clan I'm proudly a member of, Jedi Phoenix, is one of the oldest and most respected out there, and about 70% of our current active members joined the clan after 2010. Even I didn't join in quite nearly at the same time the game launched, in fact, I'm in there since '09. I see new members coming in constantly, and most of them stick. We can thank this to our rather friendly small community, but the game's nature itself also plays a role in it. Our clan has seen better days, as our members kind of lost interest in playing there, and the rest doesn't like to visit empty or near-empty servers, obviously. But still, there are other clans online too, some which still manages a healthy traffic, and some that are even older than us, still maintaining a server all right and good. People join these clans very commonly, and it has only been recently that these numbers vastly decreased, thanks to a DDoS attack that took place last year and lasted about a month, which was Jedi Academy-wise, not just aimed at one server. Actually, it might have been a Quake 3 based one, but you'll have to ask elsewhere for the technical specifics.
Bottom line, this game is probably the most "new user" friendly multiplayer I've ever seen, and it does that without turning into a slot machine that is Call of Duty. And besides that, you ain't seeing many more games where you can have lightsaber battles online, do you?

I will probably get Jedi Academy on next sales. I used to play a lot back in 2005 or so, multiplayer was lot of fun, and yes, it's probably the best SW game to date, together with Battlefront II

Too bad. It's pretty awesome but lately, many people left so our community is pretty small. Anybody interested in changing that?
