It has it in spades. For a 2d turned based game it really gets your blood pumping and soundtrack helps a lot.

  • Shadowrun Returns: Dragonfall. Or how a "battle music" is really sad because several reasons I don't want to spoil. Amazing game with an amazing soundtrack

  • Dark Souls. I'ts one of the best i've ever heard

  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution had some themes really suitable and "cyberpunk". Somehow, music worked perfectly with the atmosphere, or maybe the music made the atmosphere plausible

Ohh man, Gothic 3 - one of the best if not my favorite soundtrack EVER - plus it was recorded by an actual symphony so it is that much more awesome. :D
There are plenty of awesome tracks in the soundtrack but this one always gives me the chills https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCtV4DYZkK0
Witcher 2 soundtrack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_jizNCiInw - this was so good I actually stopped in Verden just to listen to the music for a few minutes staring at the screen doing nothing.
Elder Scrolls Skyrim - Kyne`s Peace - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrSnBKAGI1A - man when that starts playing at night with aurora borealis in the skies...

Yeah I really love music. :D

Hah yeah, I like the culture and music like Wardruna and some cheesy metal like Wintersun, Ensiferum and the like where Northern stuff is concerned.

I`ve even got this type of haircut haha.

Mm, I guess in principle that's true, I just haven't come across any?

On a more serious note, my favorite soundtrack from any game would probably be To The Moon's, it's just... Simply amazing. Nothing even comes close.

Numbers two and three would probably be Life Is Strange(which someone else already linked) and Gone Home... well, not the soundtrack itself, but the cassettes you find lying around and that you can put in music players to kind of "make your own soundtrack", which I thought was really cool.

Bastion and Transistor were already mentioned (with Bard's Tale and other great picks), so here's a few more:
Child of Light
Primordia (This one is under fits-the-game spot on)

Unrelated, but Miracle of Sound songs are pretty much this for me, for many games (his Witcher 3 songs for example).

I agree with several games that have already been mentioned as having awesome, if not perfect, soundtracks. Here's one that hasn't been mentioned yet - Spec Ops: The Line. The use of music in the game is flawless. It fits so perfectly, much in the way that Doom's soundtrack does, but it has me feeling like I'm taking part in a war movie or something. It is epic. Most of the songs are easily recognized, and they set the mood and tone the devs were looking for.

Glad you liked it. I'd say both those descriptions are accurate to the games. I can't think of any other game I've actually gone out of my way to look up the soundtrack, apart from Hotline Miami.

  • Outcast - that score was crazy. Pure epic orchestration and incredible melodies.
  • Grim Fandango - to the present day, the best soundtrack I've heard. The variety of styles, the live instruments. And the iMUSE system was awesome, allowing little musical punctuations, a short melody accompanying a single action, out of fashion now except in...
  • ...Nintendo Scores - Mario and Mario Kart, Zelda. To say that they fit is an understatement. As soon as we start a Nintendo game, we have a logo and some music. The game hasn't started yet that we're already in the game's universe. These musics are awesome. And so peculiar, so specific. Mario's score is almost elevator music. But elevated to a high art.
  • Mass Effect 1 - Any following episode walked on the shoulders of a giant. The graphics of ME1 have grown old but the music still pulls you into this universe. And it's not a rehash of typical sci-fi music. As soon as I started the game the first time, I felt that I already knew that universe because that score was so evocative. ME's OST is a staple background music when we play Twilight Imperium III with friends.

EDIT of course :
Lone Survivor
Kentucky Route Zero
NaissanceE
Crypt of the Necrodancer (what would we do without it ?)
Hyper Light Drifter
Jazzpunk
No One Lives Forever
HITMAN (episodes)
Fez
Braid (beautiful)
Crayon Physics
FFVII
The Curse of Monkey Island
Super Meat Boy
Hotline Miami
Life Is Strange
Dark Souls (and the absence of music too)
Eve (that strange game in which Peter Gabriel was involved in the mid nineties)
DOOM
DOOM 2016
Quake (Nine Inch Nails)
Xenoblade Chronicles (although a bit too cruiseship disco to be cranked to 11 with people around)
Planescape Torment
Ni No Kuni
Shadow of the Colossus
De Blob
Rayman 2
Mechwarrior 2
Mad World (stupid FM metal/rap but fits to the stupid universe)
Okami
Psychonauts
Red Dead Redemption
GTA V (the Tangerine Dream/DJ Shadow score)

Special Mention : No Man's Sky with its Godspeed You Black Emperoresque "procedural" score. But I don't know if it fits to the game since I asked for a refund after 45 minutes of in game time (from which 30 minutes were spent with my controller idling on the couch).

Any opinion about the old vs new score of Grim Fandango?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really. I didn't play the remastered version entirely and didn't really listen to the new score.
But it seemed pretty close to the original version, except synths have been replaced by acoustic instruments.
I guess it's ok.
How do you feel about it?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I haven't played it yet, but I read someone complaining about the new version. Not that this should be the deciding factor to play the old version instead of the new, but it would be great to know if this is a non-issue and that it's "safe" to just play the new one :-D

I definitely don't think that we're in a Manny-shot-first situation here. The job is clean.
However, it might be too clean or too soft since remasters tend to cut out some roughness. But as far as I know, you can discover the game and even still enjoy some of the original bugs.
As I said, I don't know much about the remastered music but I know the original score pretty well and some cheap synths have always bothered me. Some acoustic improvements are welcome so I guess it's for the better.

DOOM 2016
It just clicks at a 100% effectiveness!

edit: Sorry! I have a bad habit of commenting first when a topic excites me, I see your personal list and I agree with Super Meat Boy and Hotline Miami too! I will add:

  • Payday 2 (no pun intended)
  • MGSV: Phantom Pain
  • Borderlands 2
  • Rocket League
  • FTL
  • Witcher 1-3 (SPECIALLY 3)

Warning alert... FTL seems like a fun indie game to play from time to time... you launch it, you start playing and the next time you'll check your watch it might pass 3 freaking hours!!!! It has that "just one more turn" syndrome, it's my favorite indie from all time and it can be modded to get better graphics and some other stuffs for free on the devs page.

I highly recommend it to you and don't worry if you get slaughtered in "Normal", I have way more fun playing in "Easy" since the game has 0 hand holding with perma death and auto saves for each turn. THERE'S NO SHAME IN EASY! Q___Q

The Last Door - Glad they managed to bring the OST to Steam for the second part. Would have loved it if they could have done the same for the first, too. It fits the mood in the game so good.

Our Darker Purpose - Ah such a wonderful intro to the game. So well done to give you that creepy feeling of the Edgewood Mansion while battling for your life and freedom (which may or may not be a good thing).

Fly'n - Relaxing and nice to hear most of the time and hectic for the rising trash levels. Like the whole game on a high level.

Well, there are more but I will leave it at them for the moment. Mostly because the majority of the games I recommand are rather unknown. Well, one additional one which I don't have to link since it is well known for once: Crypt of the Necrodancer

The art and animation of that opening video for Tales Of Zestiria looks amazing, but unfortunately it's not my style of game. I don't know why, but I feel like I have heard that song countless times on the radio or tv. I tried searching, but can't find what I was thinking of. Maybe it's like audio deja vu.
