Many of you probably know about this already, but I learned of it only yesterday, and there isn't a recent thread about it, so here goes:

Rift is going f2p in a few days, but having the game is still beneficial in some ways. Raptr is doing a giveaway where you are given a key for the game and the expansion if you clock 15 hours of it on their desktop application. Time is counted even if you just minimize Rift and go do other stuff, so I guess you could snag a key and go make a giveaway with it, if you aren't interested in playing the game.

What you need to do, if you're interested:

-Register at the rift website; this will give you an account with an active trial (max level 20, max 2 character slots, no selling on AH, the usual stuff).

-Register at Raptr.

-Download and install their app. I had some issues with installing it on my windows 7 x64, but this link should work: http://clientupdater.raptr.com/client/pc/get_patch.php (it's basically a full installer instead of the downloader they link on the website)

-Start the Raptr app, start Rift. If done correctly, the Raptr icon in your taskbar, when hovered over, will say "Raptr - Playing Rift". Alternatively, turning Rift off, a popup will show up telling you how much you played.

-Play for 15 hours, or just minimize the game and go to sleep/do other stuff.

-go to http://raptr.com/game/Rift/rewards/rift-storm-legion and get your key. There are also two other minor rewards you'll qualify for at this point, cosmetic shoulderpieces and a helmet. It's all on the raptr website. You can take all three rewards. There's also a minipet that's given away for players with even more playtime.

Rift has never been a Steam game to begin with, so I don't see the sense in Valve not allowing us to link our standalone Rift accounts to our Steam accounts. Maybe we can when F2P comes out.

Since it's not a Steam key, you can't make a giveaway with it

Yes - but with the full version, you will get more bag and character slots, and with the Storm Legion you will get one more soul specialization for every class.

It isn't going 100% free to play. Think of it as being as many other MMO games where you -can- play for free, but with various handicaps such as slower leveling, being locked out of certain classes/races/costumes, paying players starting more powerfully, various tricks like that.

Champions Online locks f2p players out of freeform characters, restricts costume pieces, and locks out various power sets unless you buy them one piece at a time or you get everything for your full subscription period. Anything you purchase, you have full access to if you ever stop being a subscriber.

Dungeons & Dragons Online doesn't allow free players to access any content outside of the base game. They cannot create Monks or Favored Soul classes, and cannot use the Half-Orc, Half-Elf, Warforged, or Drow races without purchasing each class/race individually. You are also limited to only 2 character slots per server unless you purchase more. Anything you purchase, you have full access to if you ever stop being a subscriber.

Other F2P MMOs offer similar restrictions to free accounts.

For the Rift F2P conversion, there are indeed restrictions. All these restrictions are lifted if you subscribe, and that Raptr deal includes 60 days of subscription status. 30 included from the base game and 30 more added by Raptr. The 60 days begins when you enter the code into the game, so you can get the code and decide later if you want to use it or trade/sell it.
