I remember seen something like that in a Japanese show called Takeshi's Castle (hosted by Takeshi Kitano), I think in the early '90s.

But some boardgames, like chess, considered sports.
And we have some VR sport games, like, I don't know... "Kinect Sports", for example? Those are fun, especially when one cannot play some kind of sport IRL (like golf for me).

Kinect sports make you do physical activity, just like the Wii games that utilise this feature. PC games don't really have an option like that, so sports games (and not manager games) tend to be "press space quickly" games.
Board games, including chess, don't need physical activity. I prefer board games on a real board, but some have quite enjoyable adaptations (I love the video game version of Ticket to Ride). Still, there is little difference in imitating moving a chess piece on a screen or in real life, whereas there is a great difference between kicking a ball in the park or pressing space to make a video game character kick a ball.

Well, these simulator games tend to get removed sooner or later anyways.. So definitely worth it! :)
