I have a 3DS already and can't justify nearly $200 more just for some longer battery and a bigger screen when the one I've got works perfectly fine.

Golden Sun is definitely a game that I think handheld RPGs should set as their standard. I believe it was a very well executed RPG. The DS one was rather disappointed. I waited so many long years for it, constantly telling people that there would be another one when they did not believe and then that was what we got. It seemed very... dumbed down. I remember some puzzles in the GBA versions taking me hours to complete (I was also quite young at the time, so maybe that helped) and the DS one was too easy, I think.

I definitely had to grind a bit and plan my attacks in the GBA versions. In the DS version, though, I kind of just went with whatever since it didn't seem like much planning was truly necessary.

if you dont mind doujin games you can try:
Labyrinth of Touhou.
Touhou Genius of Sappheiros.
Touhou Gensou Maroku.
Touhou Pocket Wars the 2nd.

It is almost dead outside Japan. In Japan and well maybe some other asia countries they are popular

I'd hope not. If it dies there, it's gone for good.

I'll have to, thank you. I've got a DS Lite and 3DS, so plenty handheld games are open to me.

If even one good one a year, and a damn miracle if it's actually quality.

I miss the old JRPGs I'd love to see a fresh take on one for either pc or ps3, I cant justify getting a handheld. I've been collecting games that I missed as a kid to make up for it.

It would be nice, but it doesn't seem popular enough in the States, for example, to justify localization.

Well it's not dead since it's the best genre. FF6 and Chrono Trigger will always live on.
But these days the only few ones around are Atlantica Online and The Last Remnant.

Oh my god...
Good to see there are so many others that feel the same way as me. As for any upcoming games, the only one I'm really looking forward to is Secrets of Grindea. While it is action rather than turn based, it somehow captures that old school feel that I love and want so badly. Maybe it's because it reminds me of the older handheld versions of Zelda.
Of course it'd be awesome if something on the scale of FFX came out, but I don't see that happeneing for a good long while. QQ

Ooh, and it's been greenlit! Well, still wondering what they're doing with that FFX HD.

Dead? No. Dying? Yes. It use to be my favorite genre and now I couldn't careless if it disappears forever. A lot of people like myself have grown out of it and moved on. I much prefer western RPG's now or Dark Souls. Even point and click adventures are more fun. If a jRPG doesn't have a strong story, it just isn't worth playing. The only one that looks interesting is Ni No Kuni.

i agree that if the story is not strong than i wont play it but thats the only point WRPGS and JRPG are different. i enjoy them equally and the JRPG market has move more towards the handheld and pc group than main console

I really enjoyed turn-based games such as:
I know the last frontier for it is really on the handhelds and that the PS2 had a great run of these. I'm hoping we'll see more as time goes on considering it really is storytelling in video game form at its finest level. (To clear up any confusion, this last comment refers to all RPGs in general, not just turn-based RPGs.)
P.S. I'm a big fan of random battles and not doing things in real-time.
