That comment about story telling was really meant to refer to RPGs in general, not just turn-based. I apologize for the confusion. Post edited.

My bad, and I honestly think story telling is independent from the genre. Visual novels, adventure games, and the point click adventure games are overlooked for some of their amazing stories.
All genres go through their slumps. Indie games keep all genres alive.
Edit* Breath of Death and Cthulhu Saves the World are two very funny jrpgs.

I named some specific games to head people in the right direction of the type of RPG I was speaking of. I apologize if that wasn't clear enough. Those are all great games, too, though! Isn't there a new Fire Emblem coming for 3DS?

Been meaning to get those. I can never get into real-time. I like to carefully plan my moves. And sometimes I like to go back on certain things and go a different angle.

I haven't and have been looking at them quite a bit this past month. I wanna pick up a Vita for P4G, but damn... another $200 shelled out? I don't know. Although, Vita might have some promising leads for me in terms of what I'm looking for. I also need to learn Japanese and import copies myself. :D

Didn't they cut some things out of the Portable version?

They took out the cutscenes, which I miss a lot. Other than that, they changed the combat. You're able to control your party members now. I don't control them, though. The combat is a LOT easier than in the PS2 version, but I think the new combat system is overall better even if it is easier. It feels less clunky.

Anything you're looking forward to? I know 3DS hasn't been very kind to me in terms of 3DS RPG releases.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy looks similar to older Final Fantasy titles, with turn-based battles, random encounters and job classes. There is no news of western release for now, but since it sells well in Japan, I bet they will start translating it soon.

YES. I want this one. Saw it the other day. Hoping it comes over.

I still need to get Blue Dragon (Edit: Thanks for the reminder!). Mistwalker did an incredible job with Lost Odyssey, I think. And, without giving anything away, really, I'm really crossing my fingers that LO isn't going to die out like that and that Mistwalker is working on second one.

Blue Dragon is fun, not as awesome as Lost Odyssey though. I've just remembered that I haven't actually finished LO! I spent ages doing side quests and grinding because I didn't want it to end and in the process made it boring. I need to finish off the story.

I didn't want it to end, either. Very sad when it did. I want more.

Sadly, what's popular is action, action, action these days. And add some linearity.

baldurs gate is not jrpg and it not dead, skyrm will die before baldurs gate

skyrim may be fun, as lexploring experience, dungeon crawling, world exploration etc, but it lacks one thing that RPGs tend to have most polished - STORY! none the less it's still pretty good game, but you have to come to it from different angle than story-driven RPGs ;)
(Oh, and Planescape is better than BG2! ;P)

get a second chance at enjoying BG with Baldur's Gate: Enchanced Edition!

I've been dying to play that game. It looks really really good.

So sad.... I love JRPG's the most. Last one I recall playing is Gadget Trial, I'll eventually buy more for my Vita though. Waiting for Rainbow Moon to release :D, but yeah... Fire Emblem on Steam will be the day my heart explodes and creates firecrackers around the vicinity that I see the news.

Picked up Sticker Star on launch day, Jamie. Hardly a full "RPG," but still fun.

I agree. They are not as plentiful as they once were.
I think the best Turn Based Battle system ever created, was Grandia. Grand 1, 2 and Xtreme were brilliant. Leveling system was extremely balanced and enjoyable. Plus, amazing story lines. I can still sit back and play through most of "Grandia 1" in my head.

I remember playing 2 on Dreamcast as a kid. Loved it.

It is great that it remains alive by being integrated into other games, but I'd love for the days of it being numerous to return.

My last turned based rpg was Kings Quest Mask of Eternity. Still love them though

Sometimes I hate that we've been so spoiled by graphics these days when it's hard to go back and play some games like the one you mentioned due to it feeling just so damn old.

Well, hey, you shouldn't be able to win fights in two seconds! (Unless you've been grinding plenty and facing monsters ten levels or more below you.)

5 is really the only one worth playing really. Well, 2 and 4 are ok but not outstanding games, but 1 is a cure for insomnia and 3 is an all around badly paced game with tons of plot threads that go nowhere or are just there to pad out the length of the game to the point of being insulting like all that lighthouse stuff, that sushi fetch quest, teleporting you back home when you've finally accomplished something, and let's not forget about giving you wrong directions to get through the Desert of Death.

Earthbound was to good to not gotten much exposure! I remember getting the giant box with the shirt and stuff from wal-mart for a really low price, and it was supposed to been $80, haha good days.

Nah, JRPG's should be going strong, even I myself have gotten into The Last Remnant. It's just hard for the Japanese industry to make new IP's to satisfy new consumers, or make a market satisfying the west. Take Capcom for instance, since Inafune leaving.

I'm still trying to figure out if I like this new battle system TLR implemented.

It isn't like how it used to be in the 90s to late 2000's, lets just say, snes, ps1, and ps2 of course was the mecca hub of import games such as, Star ocean, Lufia, Dragon Quest, Legend of Dragoon, jade series, breath of fire, Earthbound, Chrono Cross, Secret of Mana series and countless other's that made those system's what they were. I always go back to those systems to play so many lost gems.

It's not dying.
Amazing RPGs on handhelds this gen.

I'd love to see them get involved more on PC and main (or next-gen) consoles more than they are currently.

I wouldn't say they're dead, but you need to know where to look.
Our new localization project over at Fruitbat Factory is called 99 Spirits, and it's a puzzle RPG with somewhat turn-based battles.

I'll be sure to keep an eye out for any upcoming news.

I really enjoyed turn-based games such as:
I know the last frontier for it is really on the handhelds and that the PS2 had a great run of these. I'm hoping we'll see more as time goes on considering it really is storytelling in video game form at its finest level. (To clear up any confusion, this last comment refers to all RPGs in general, not just turn-based RPGs.)
P.S. I'm a big fan of random battles and not doing things in real-time.
