I really enjoyed turn-based games such as:

  • Final Fantasy X
  • Lost Odyssey (this is a damn gem and really the only notable RPG entry for the 360)
  • Golden Sun series (give me more games exactly like this on handhelds and I'll buy the CE 5 minutes before you can pre-order it)

I know the last frontier for it is really on the handhelds and that the PS2 had a great run of these. I'm hoping we'll see more as time goes on considering it really is storytelling in video game form at its finest level. (To clear up any confusion, this last comment refers to all RPGs in general, not just turn-based RPGs.)

P.S. I'm a big fan of random battles and not doing things in real-time.

I disagree that turn based games have the best story telling. While it is true some of the best stories were in turn based games they don't always go hand in hand.

That comment about story telling was really meant to refer to RPGs in general, not just turn-based. I apologize for the confusion. Post edited.

My bad, and I honestly think story telling is independent from the genre. Visual novels, adventure games, and the point click adventure games are overlooked for some of their amazing stories.

All genres go through their slumps. Indie games keep all genres alive.

Edit* Breath of Death and Cthulhu Saves the World are two very funny jrpgs.

I named some specific games to head people in the right direction of the type of RPG I was speaking of. I apologize if that wasn't clear enough. Those are all great games, too, though! Isn't there a new Fire Emblem coming for 3DS?

It really seems like RPGs are headed the way of real-time battles. There are still a lot of good games that are turned based, though. The Atelier (+Mana Khemia) and Ar Tonelico series come to mind.

Been meaning to get those. I can never get into real-time. I like to carefully plan my moves. And sometimes I like to go back on certain things and go a different angle.

I know what you mean. I'm not a fan of real-time for RPGs. It makes me feel like I'm constantly missing something. Also, SMT: Persona 3/4 and their remakes are turn based if you haven't played those.

I haven't and have been looking at them quite a bit this past month. I wanna pick up a Vita for P4G, but damn... another $200 shelled out? I don't know. Although, Vita might have some promising leads for me in terms of what I'm looking for. I also need to learn Japanese and import copies myself. :D

I was thinking the exact same thing about P4G. It's like they purposefully made it on the Vita so we would all buy one, lol. I have played Persona 3 Portable and it's a LOT more polished than its Playstation 2 counterpart.

Didn't they cut some things out of the Portable version?

They took out the cutscenes, which I miss a lot. Other than that, they changed the combat. You're able to control your party members now. I don't control them, though. The combat is a LOT easier than in the PS2 version, but I think the new combat system is overall better even if it is easier. It feels less clunky.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy looks similar to older Final Fantasy titles, with turn-based battles, random encounters and job classes. There is no news of western release for now, but since it sells well in Japan, I bet they will start translating it soon.

The Wii U could possibly be the successor "home" console for jRPGs.

This based on Nintendo's in-house IPs, and has nothing to do with their (lack of) third party support.

I still need to get Blue Dragon (Edit: Thanks for the reminder!). Mistwalker did an incredible job with Lost Odyssey, I think. And, without giving anything away, really, I'm really crossing my fingers that LO isn't going to die out like that and that Mistwalker is working on second one.

Blue Dragon is fun, not as awesome as Lost Odyssey though. I've just remembered that I haven't actually finished LO! I spent ages doing side quests and grinding because I didn't want it to end and in the process made it boring. I need to finish off the story.

  1. I didnt say BG is dead. I clearly mentioned this title, as an example of such an epic RPG genre that died since Black Isle/Interplay went to the other side.
  2. I've never enjoyed any other game as i did with BG2.
  3. Skyrim is for me 1 hit game, finish it and never come back.

skyrim may be fun, as lexploring experience, dungeon crawling, world exploration etc, but it lacks one thing that RPGs tend to have most polished - STORY! none the less it's still pretty good game, but you have to come to it from different angle than story-driven RPGs ;)

(Oh, and Planescape is better than BG2! ;P)

I agree. They are not as plentiful as they once were.

I think the best Turn Based Battle system ever created, was Grandia. Grand 1, 2 and Xtreme were brilliant. Leveling system was extremely balanced and enjoyable. Plus, amazing story lines. I can still sit back and play through most of "Grandia 1" in my head.

probably because turn-based fights stretch for too goddamn long. Take final fantasy series for example. God forbid you use those special attacks. You're in for a 7 minute animation :P

5 is really the only one worth playing really. Well, 2 and 4 are ok but not outstanding games, but 1 is a cure for insomnia and 3 is an all around badly paced game with tons of plot threads that go nowhere or are just there to pad out the length of the game to the point of being insulting like all that lighthouse stuff, that sushi fetch quest, teleporting you back home when you've finally accomplished something, and let's not forget about giving you wrong directions to get through the Desert of Death.

Nah, JRPG's should be going strong, even I myself have gotten into The Last Remnant. It's just hard for the Japanese industry to make new IP's to satisfy new consumers, or make a market satisfying the west. Take Capcom for instance, since Inafune leaving.

It isn't like how it used to be in the 90s to late 2000's, lets just say, snes, ps1, and ps2 of course was the mecca hub of import games such as, Star ocean, Lufia, Dragon Quest, Legend of Dragoon, jade series, breath of fire, Earthbound, Chrono Cross, Secret of Mana series and countless other's that made those system's what they were. I always go back to those systems to play so many lost gems.
