I always try to contact the winner and ask them how they prefer it - if it's a key I just email it - if I can't contact them I will send the gift through Steam

I would add the person and give him the gift. if he doesnt get on i sent him email.

It all goes into the mail system..unless your gifting a copy to somebody on your friends list.
