I have finally found a way to download games whilst playing other games!

It's definitely just me who has only just found out, right?

Ok apparently people don't know, so what you do is right click on the game you want to play, then select the box that says "Allow steam to download other updates while this game is running".

I think the checkbox to allow other games to download while playing is new. Before you had to tab out. I'm sure lots of people don't know (and most prolly don't care either) :)

Tabbing out works fine for me, what checkbox are you talking about? :O

Right click then go to properties then check "Allow steam to download other updates while this game is running"

I care because the download speed I get is 1mb/s, so it gets pretty boring waiting for 10gb+ games to download.

It's been like this for about 2 months now

No, I live in the Philippines.

Our ISP cut the line for no reason and we waited for a month and since they haven't responded after 2 calls a day we decided to chance ISPs and now we're gonna have 2mbps in a few days. :D

just so you guys know 1mbps (megabits per second) is not the same as 1Mb/s (megabytes per second). 8 bit = 1 byte, so its effectively 1/8 the speed... just saying...

UK has alright internet speeds. I live in a rather small town and I'm getting 1.5 - 1.7 MB/s speeds on Steam.

No matter how fast your connection is, the Steam servers seem to throttle you to around 4 Mbps anyways. At least that's been my experience with a 32 Mbps connection.

Sorry but the answer is "No" :(

The answer is and always has been 'Yes'.

Older way: launch the game, alt+tab out and resume the download, alt+tab back to the game. Done.

New way: right click the game in the library -> properties -> allow steam to download other games whilst this game is playing (or w/e the wording is).

Newer new way (beta only): steam setting -> client -> globally allow games to download whilst playing.

Found it a long time ago. I am in Beta so maybe that why. But it's buggy. Sometimes, even when I allow it to download when a game is running, the check mark disappears, and the option gets reset. Also don't really know where the global settings are. Having to do it for all games manually is annoying.

It's a relatively new option, but it was announced on the beta client patch notes.

If we can configure this behavior per application since at least November, why not allow it to be set globally? All the functionality was there, and the users were demanding it.

Don't you wish there was a global setting for this stuff in Settings > Downloads > Allow downloads during gameplay? Yeah, I wish there was too.

Start playing game, tab out then pause/unpause downloads.

Unfortunately yes, but luckily not too many.

You could do this manually since, forever. Just simply start up a game, alt-tab out the resume your download, alt-tab back into the game and keep on playing.

It was possible to download updates without enabling this option you had to start game,- downloading stopped and you had to start downloading again.
