^ This! And Fallout 3 / New Vegas. But definitely Transport Tycoon. It was the first game that made me think about my own money back when I was about 6 or 7 years old. And even my dad still plays OpenTTD nowadays (as well as Age of Empires 2).

The random stuff you can do Just Cause 2 is pretty entertaining. Once while I was watching my nephew play, we saw off in the distance some kind of dirigible. So he decided to see what it was...
... an hour later, he still hadn't reached it. :)
To reach the mysterious thing in the sky, he need only fly straight for five minutes. But that would mean ignoring the dozen other fun things he'd see on the way. So, like Thrain, lots of adventures of a most pleasant sort he had, but he never got near the airship. :)

Yes, I believe that was the place. Later I went there by myself, think it was part of a quest, a bit disappointing actually.
But it was a great sandbox experience. There was so much in the world that my nephew kept flying off to explore the new place he'd just seen, and never made it back to the original thing... :)

At the moment, Terraria. Minecraft and Don't Starve are also awesome.
