Tomb Raider is the prequel of the entire series. Tomb Raider I comes later in the timeline, and it's about you retrieving 3 pieces of an atlantean artifact called "Scion".
The story of Tomb Raider is mainly hinted in the old games in Lara's biography, in the manuals mostly.

Tomb Raider I is the first game which I owned on PS1 and was awesome back then but hasn't aged well. Tomb Raider is a reboot of the franchise - and as much as I'm an older gamer who likes bigging up the classics it is basically a lot better in every way. Get both games if you can afford it or just the newer one if you can't.

The question you should be asking is how Tomb Raider I compares to Tomb Raider: Anniversary, and whether it is worthwhile to own both.
Tomb Raider (2013) and Tomb Raider I are unrelated, vastly different games. Tomb Raider (2013) is a prequel to the entire series and is a more modern game, so I would say start there and go back if you become a fan of the franchise.

Thanks. I was trying to decide if I should ask for a TR1 GA to be rerolled since I already own TR-2013. It wasn't clear to me that they were vastly different games since the names are so close. As usual, helpful answers were very quickly posted by our fellow Steamgifters above. :-)

You'd be better comparing Tomb Raider: Anniversary to Tomb Raider 1. I very much love TR:A, and if you're thinking of playing some of the old games, I'd suggest you to just pick up TR:A, because it's a full remake of the original TR 1.

Sounds reasonable. Have never played any of these games, but my best friend who passed away a few years back was a huge fan of the original -- so I have some nostalgic interest in what I now know to be TR1. As it turns out, I just won a GA for it so I'll probably look at that before trying TR:A.

Well, TR 2013 is more action packed than the original TR 1, which involved more puzzle solving and getting your way around from point A to point B... While TR 2013 is very fun to play, I'd suggest to approach them differently and enjoy them for what they are. TR 2013, IMHO, just inherits the name of the franchise because is a reboot of the series. The old (previous) games are just that, old, and they wanted to make a new game to appeal to new audiences.

Am trying to track down the difference, and perhaps a little history, of these two games on Steam:
Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider I
Maybe my Google foo is just failing me, but I haven't been able to suss out what the story is and if it is worthwhile to own both games.
Anyone?
EDIT: Thanks to everyone for the quick and useful information!
