I've reached the max number of blue hearts I can give, but would like to add a few more people, so I went to my whitelist and realized a few of the users there logged in for the last time years ago. I imagine most of these are never coming back to the site for whatever reason, but there's a small chance the most recent could, and I feel it'd be unfair to them. So how long do you think is long enough?

Plus this is as good a reason as any other to do a smatl t?ain, can't remember the last time I even made a thread here /wcD?G/ ends next Sunday (edit: fixed the thing)

Nah, don't remove them for that

Do you remember why you added the users, who are offline now, to your whitelist? If there have been great reasons, keep them, in case they come back. If you do not remember or it was "just a good reason", make room for new, great people.

what Oppen is saying. but you really want to check 1000 users? would be too hard for you to start the whitelist again from zero? it really depends on why and how you whitelist users...

also, ESGST can help you for back-ups in case you mess up the all things (been there, done that!!)

If you actually remember their name and the reason to whitelist, you might wanna keep'em. Otherwise personally I'd probably even go with 6 months, so I voted 1 year.

I am curious.
What is the maximum for the whitelist ?
1000 as the BL ?

If someones, that was important for you, last login was 2 years ago and you don't have outside of sg contact in some way, you can kick him from the WL because the chance that this person come back is nearly zero.
After 1 year for the ones that weren't important for you and you added them maybe for nice GAs or a friendly sentence.

But it is hard to answer because none of us know for which reasons you WL users.

odds are those gone for a year have a very low chance of coming back, some do return but not many
so unless you whitelisted for a special reason, make room for someone new!

An alternative, if you want an infinite "whitelist" would be to create a Steam group and invite people to that, then when creating a "whitelist" GA add the group and whitelist.

Which would be a problem for all the inactive ones because of the join the group requirement ;-D

You can create group + whitelist GAs, so would include all those already on the whitelist (active or not), and all those added to the group.

Correct.
So he could add more as 1k in the end.

But the sorting out of the complete inactive ones would be, from my point of view, the better way.

nice idea.
adding: create a whitelist only giveaway saying you created such a Group and ask to join, so you could "check" those are active

A popular thought that people are too shy to say out loud:
It's easy, remove everybody from your whitelist and add just me. :)

Personally, I always go with, one year without logging, it's usually enough.

If I see them again, I may add them. But it's unlikely they will ever log in again

I had no idea there was a limit.
1 Year is absolutelly doable. And frankly its not like you cant re-add people to it later.

Like someone suggested i think a group could be ideal for you. If it will make you feel better send a message to them (comment on one of their GAs or similar) that you reched the limit, they were gone but that youve made a group you could add then. You know 'hey u alive? when youre back hit me up'. Copy-paste that to whoever you feel bad removing.

I'd clean out anyone over a year off the site. You can always add them again if they become active and you recognize them being whitelist-able again.

I agree that 1 year or older is reasonable.
It is, after all, just your whitelist - they can still enter your normal giveaways - you haven't suddenly blacklisted them.

i agree that 1 year or older is reasonable, even if they return it is not like you can't just re add them if you see them again and want to do so.

Bumping for the train. The 1 year option is the clear winner already, I'd say. Thanks for the comments and votes, everyone.

Unless you reach a limit that prohibits you from adding new worthy WL candidates, leave them on it. If they come back, they will be very happy about it for sure. :)

I am not sure about people not logging in after a year, but those who don't show up after 2 is as good as gone.
