Most people pirate games to see if they are worth spending money on, take a look at my account as a exampel 700+ games, i am a collector but most people cant afford that many games :) So they download the game first THEN go and buy it ^_^
Not saying EVERYONE does this, but quite a few does, so it isnt always bad ^_^

Wrong, people usually want multiplayer games so they try out single player first.
But yeah there are demos for most games, but i don't consider them good enough for a try out most of the time.
And there are very few games worth doing that, skyrim, fallout 3/NV, oblivion, morrowind...
I've pirated lots of games before, like 2-3 years ago on their release and i bought them now for steam. Bioshock 2, Dead space 2, Resident Evil 5 for example. I haven't pirated anything since skyrim's release, that was the last thing i tried out for perfomance related stuff, game has some issues on my laptop, low fps in some dungeons... If it worked better i would have bought it last sale, 50% off.

I said that in my reply... Games with multiplayer included are usually targeted for piracy, people play the game, if they end up liking it, they might end up buying it.
But games that are exclusively SP, people usually pirate to play it or also to try it out, but most likely to play it without paying since there is no real reason to buy it...

This typical 'excuse' is just annoying.
Just say you don't want to pay for it and just admit it.
If you want the game buy the damn thing
If there's no demo then just don't buy it
99% of people never buy the game after they pirate it. Only a small small minority of people actually buy something afterwards.
Justify your theft in however way you want but it's theft.

Piracy is NOT theft because the original doesn't disappear. It's copyright infringement. Get your terms right.
Also there's no way to prove that when someone pirates something, they were going to buy it in the first place. Saying it to prevent someone from using the stupid "lost sale" argument.

Innovation > legislation, adopt to new methods of distribution, evolve, remain relevant, survive. Valve revitalized PC gaming with this business model while others lobby congress for regulation instead expanding inside the new market

I can't, so you'll have to settle for this measly +1 remark.

Get your facts straight, people DO pirate games before they buy them, and it's more likely to happen with good multiplayer games. It's no excuse, unless you are a 12 year old who wants free stuff no matter what.
Hell if you really want to know, i pirated a crap ton of games, most of them were for perfomance testing before i decided to buy. Some of the others were simply to have fun with. Games like Fallout and the elder scrolls are some exceptions to this cause, i did pirate oblivion and skyrim, along with fallout NV/3 (for the dlc's). I have Fallout for 360, i don't have xbox live anymore and i can't even connect to live anymore, so instead of buying the game again i decided to pirate it instead, just because i wanted to try out hte DLC's. This in a matter of fact is stealing but i don't give a f*ck, all i wanted to do was try out the dlc and i didn't feel like buying the game again just for that, besides i prefer it on 360, much better gameplay experience than on my laptop.
And for the record, most of the games i bought on sale on steam were pirated games i tried before. That sums up to over 25% of my current games, if not more. Am i a thief for pirating games before buying them? No, i'm not.
tl;dr: Not even everyone is a 12 year old looking for freebies. Most games in order to have MP experience they need to buy the game, so let's say people are forced to buy the game eventually, if they want to jump in for the real fun.

So you are telling me i pirate games because i want them for free, yet i end up buying them?
Seriously why do i even bother to explain... It all depends on the person behind it, let's leave it at that. I got some friends on steam who do that, me and my brother do it aswell, even though he could instantly buy things without pirating, yet he does it just to be sure he won't be buying something idiotic like COD MW3.
Comment has been collapsed.
it's about how you look at things
let's be serious, nowadays you trust what your friend says more than trailers and companies behind a new game
the more people hear about a game, the higher are the chances that someone will buy it (somewhere I saw an interesting statistic that 90% of content is pirated and just 10% is legit, so to me it would be better to see 100k of people playing the game instead of 1k)

What's the point of being a game collector? Last time I checked, games were meant to be played.
Comment has been collapsed.
Comparing stamps to games. Genious. Some stamps are in fact made to be collected. Can't say the same about games, or can I?

Some poeple (and yes, I did that too in my life) often get pirated copy just to check if certain game will even run on older machines. I used to check every interesting title like that on my older PC. Now I don't have that problem so can go and just pre-order what I want. But in few years I will prolly have to get back to those "habbits" for some time... untill new PC.
Circle of (PC's)life xD

If you are going to be so strict on everything, are you going to be able to tell me you've NEVER done anything illegal before?
If you can say that, then you're allowed to say what you've just said, but if you haven't... that would be embarrassing.
I'll be honest if you look at my steam games list, ive probably pirated about 75% of those games before actually purchasing them,
If i like the game i will buy it, but if by 20minutes i feel ive had enough of this shiz, ill simply uninstall it,
I dont see anything especially wrong with pirating if you have the intention of "trialing" it, but if you download it
simply because you dont have the money and you do it on a regular basis then you should feel bad.
But back on topic, i dont even think that it matters, it's not an offensive comment of any sort. Its like trying to call the police because a random guy stared you in the eyes for no reason...

Not all file-sharing is illegal, it's all about content and copyrights.

I remember when Pure Pwnage episodes would come out the servers would be so slow everyone was using the torrents, CBC used to host content on torrents, many people use torrents are a distribution method on launch, perhaps allowing humble bundles to be torrented could save on the Humble teams overhead

That is how I download my Humble Bundle games when I am not on my Windows computer with Steam.

The way I understand the rules loko set down, as long as a link to a torrent or other pirated material is not posted, we don't punish. Asking for one is not encouraged, but I don't know how we'd deal with it. I'd certainly punish if they posted a thread solely to ask for one, but I'm not sure about replies to other people. Submit a Support ticket and I'll pass it around to the other mods, see what they think, see if we can throw down some base rules.

I hate those sort of people,it offended you that he asked for a torrent??You can tell him its not moral...and lets say not legall but to start a new thread...There are a lot of people who pirate just to test the game(if they like it,if their comp can run it...) and again a lot of people who cannot afford...I dont like piracy,I dont pirate game for a good while, but Im not against it completely like some closed minded guys....Like a fellow member said before, you must be from usa...

I think it's a common mistake to confuse people with their government. US citizens are trying as hard as they can to retake control of US law from the large corporations. I think most US citizens would agree that the MPAA and RIAA are entirely evil, but those organizations have the politicians on their payroll and once they are in power it's difficult to get them out.

a torrent (well now they are magnets links) is in essence a word document that can be processed by torrent clients. so you want to report him for asking for a word file? and also is some contrary its perfectly legal to torrent, look at Somalia; no one would care about torrenting there, and it would probably be perfectly legal, so who are you to say they did something wrong. Also the internet is a lawless place too, but that is another matter.
also no there is no need for a report piracy button, its about as stupid as a report idiot button. it causes more work for the staff for no needed reason.
Comment has been collapsed.
Because neither a torrent file nor Magnet URIs are anything like a word document at all.
Saying a Magnet URI is like a word document is like saying a HTTP URL is like a word document - they're not. They're links.
Torrent files are files that contain readable meta information and binary hashes. Saying they are like word documents that can be processed by torrent clients is a bit like saying MP3s are like word documents a media player can process. They're not like word documents.
Comment has been collapsed.
a torrent link can be opened in notepad quite easily... and a URL can't http URL is a string of letters. (anyway 90% of torrents have moved to magnets, which are links), however you can store URL's in word so they are to some what.
and a torrent is just a sting that the software knows how to intercept, and a word document is just a way of storing string, letters and numbers. so really it is just a simple word document, it is just handled by different software
Comment has been collapsed.
"a torrent link can be opened in notepad quite easily"
A Magnet URI can't, though, which is what I was saying.
And just because you can store a URL in a word document does not make it like a word document. You don't go around saying "a poem is like a word document", either, or do you ?.
Because, you know, it's not.
Oh, and thank you for explaining a torrent is 'just a string' that 'the software knows how to intercept' (I think you mean interpret, btw) - here was me thinking a torrent file also contained binary ;)
EDIT: You are, of course, correct in that both torrent files and word documents are used to store information - but that is, of course, true for any file format.

Replace "word document" with "plaintext file" and quit being pedantic.
And a Magnet URI is just an address that contains information for what it will look for, which isn't a file because nothing is saved.
This is all a Magnet URI is: magnet:? xl = [Size in Bytes] & dn = [file name (URL encoded)] & xt = urn: tree: tiger: [ TTH hash (Base32) ]
A URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) is very much akin to a URL (Uniform Resource Locators).

"Replace "word document" with "plaintext file" and quit being pedantic. "
I am not being pedantic here. Torrents are not plain text files, either, because they can contain binary encoded data. Binary != plain text.
EDIT: You've posted a torrent below - do try opening it in notepad. Does that look like plain text to you ?
"And a Magnet URI is just an address that contains information for what it will look for, which isn't a file because nothing is saved."
I know. That's why I stated that a Magnet URI isn't a file. As I tried to explain to Kumori, it's a link (see above). Did you not read what i wrote ?
"A URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) is very much akin to a URL (Uniform Resource Locators)."
I know. That's why I used the HTTP URL as an analogy. Did you not read what I wrote ?
"This is all a Magnet URI is: magnet:? xl = [Size in Bytes] & dn = [file name (URL encoded)] & xt = urn: tree: tiger: [ TTH hash (Base32) ]"
I know. Thanks for quoting the Wikipedia entry :)

I think site like this needs it. Of course it isn't that frequent to see piracy over here, but if this site is mentioned even in the Steamforums sticky as legit and okay, it should atleast try to prevent having links here leading to pirate stuff. (if the torrent really contained info to cracked stuff) .. I have nothing against torrents as a sharing tool, if it doesn't contain any illegal stuff.

Maybe it's so basic a rule that it was forgotten.

WHERE CAN I REPORT ATHEISTS TO FBI???
PS to be serious, only spreading piracy on this site should be forbidden (posting links, not asking for them).

Not true. Watching a game being played (assuming you mean let's plays, trailers are even worse) is much different than actually playing a game. I've seen a lot of grand strategy games being played (Total War, Civ, Europa Universalis 3) and they look like fun, but anytime I actually try to get into them I get bored rather quickly for various reasons. I think I put the longest time in Civ 4, and I didn't even get out of the Tutorial.
At the same time some games look rather eh (AI War, A Valley Without Wind, Uplink) but then end up playing better than they look.
Though maybe that is just me and most people have no problem judging a game based on gameplay footage.

+1 I actually do that too. I can't spend money on a game without knowing what I'm getting.

I tried to do that at every restaurant I visited for a month - taste all the food without paying for it, because I couldn't be sure I would like it. Boy, you don't want to know how upset they were, always threatening to call the cops; didn't matter that I kept saying if they were too damn lazy to make trial size dishes why should I have to pay for the full meal since I was only going to take a bite or two.
Based on their bad reactions I then tried this approach with condoms at the pharmacy - I'm rather big and felt that I needed to try em out and make sure they weren't going to break before I bought an entire 12 pack. Well, the pharmacy didn't like that and although I got a phone number from the girl working there and high-fives from the cops (after a healthy frisking), I'm now banned from that store.
Just goes to show you that our damn society is so unfair...
...er wait, I don't think any of this actually happened...
Comment has been collapsed.
Way to dilute a point. You're lending credence to pirates with those arguments. Unless you really have trouble differentiating tangible goods (such as condoms and servings of food) from intangible goods, like video game files. Do you realize that there's different laws for those, because they're actually different?
By stealing some form of physical good, you're denying its use to the rightful owner. By misappropriating a digital file, you'er bypassing an understanding that it should be used under rules set forth by its creator or owner.
If the "rules" were actually consumer friendly, noone would have to pirate anything. And don't even start to suggest that "piracy is theft" crap. It's not. It's copyright violation. I detest pirates a bit less than developers who don't bother to have some sort of preview or demo for their software, like it's supposed to be admired in a museum.
