I am a pokemon fan, but I never wanted to shell out 300 NZD on a 3ds just to play the latest pokemon (and to be honest I heard 3d was rubbish) so the announcement of a cheaper 2d console was a god send. But I have seen a lot of negativity about, I think it's a great idea (168 NZD for a 2ds, which I will gladly pay) but what do you guys think?

My bro and I are debating whether or not to get the 2DS ($149 AUD) or the Pokemon X&Y Limited Edition 3DS XL ($249 AUD).

From what I've heard, most people don't ever use the 3D on the 3DS and most games can play perfectly well in 2D only....but the 2DS has no clamshell design, which I don't particularly fancy.

yeah but the problem is here in nz the x & Y edition in Nz doesn't even come with the game (go figure) and in NZ we get the worst prices of everything except for steam (praise the rising Nz dollar, eventually a bad thing)

The limited edition models don't come with the game regardless of region.

That's exactly why. The hinges snap reallllyy easily.

I wouldn't want to test that out for $200

I got along just fine without having my handheld consoles fold before the Gameboy Advance SP, and I'd love to have a 2DS. Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Game Gear, Nomad, dozens of those Tiger Electronics games. None of those folded shut.

I tried the 3DS. The 3D effect is useless, since I'm not allowed to move my head or else I lose where my head should be. I constantly reposition my head/hands/console while I play.

The 2DS is something I'm considering picking up.

I don't think it is terrific value to be honest. In Australia, I was able to get a 3DS for less than $130 from EB through price-matching.
I also think Harvey Norman had it recently (3DS) for $128 as well.

Well if people are putting the 3ds on sale don't you think they will be putting the 2ds on sale too?

I don't reckon, it will RRP for $150 as someone above me has said before. Give it a few months, and it will be on sale, but why wait for that one to be on sale. You can get a normal 3DS, with the 3D for less than what the 2DS will release for

Hacked 3DS card? I'm presuming this is a very up-to-date coughtaboor4coughnintendodoesntlikeit card?

EDIT- hang on, download Pokemon X and Y?...
Obviously, if this works for you, you won't be publicly disclosing how you'd be able to do this... but doesn't sound like a coughr4coughcard to me...

It's a console mainly targeted for the younger audience.

The lack of 3D is there so it won't damage the kids eyes. Remember the 3D is not mandatory with the 3DS you always have the option to turn it off. And the 3D quality differs on the game. Some games have amazing 3D and some games have shitty ones.

They went with a bulky design so kids wont break the hinges. Young kids and hinges don't not go well together, but due to this it isn't very portable.

In my opinion it's the worst 3DS model out there, but for the price it's alright I guess.

Personally I think spending a little extra for a normal 3ds is worth it (and considering how old the 3ds is at this point, maybe you could find it on sale for near-2ds prices?) but if you're really short on money and don't care about 3d or the clamshell design then go ahead.

Should be good, I got the 3D, not much of a fan. The 3D hurts to look at and is annoying, and I got the first, non-XL version, biggest reason not to touch it :P

Its name is a really stupid. I don't like 3D. I don't really know anything else about it. The original DS has the best library of any portable console, I think, so at least I can hope for good things.

2DS looks like they design it for home use. If I own a handheld console, I'm probably won't be carrying it anywhere I go since I'm busy with stuff. It might not be as bad as it looks. I'm thinking buying it for playing Legends of Zelda.

I wouldn't ever consider buying it but that's just my preference from a Gameboy SP to DS to DS Lite; I've only owned those with clam-shell design although I used to borrow my friend's GB Advanced and Color.

I will buy a Vita, it will have Binding of Isaac Rebirth for free on PS Plus, an exclusive Phantasy Star and Ys Celceta.

I want to stay away from Pokemon as it is the gaming equivalent of crack cocaine.

It won't fit in my pocket and there is no protection for the screens except for a carrying case which will cost at least 10 USD.
I myself am thinking of buying a 3DS for Pokemon, and the only downside I heard about it was battery life and somewhat sucky 3D that I can just turn off if I feel like it. Overall, 6 years ago I got the DS Lite, then the DSi and the folding just seems more comfortable than a tablet.

Anyway, I figured I would like the 3DS more, I heard of people playing it while charging, but I figure that could ruin the battery even more. Can anyone tell me if it actually does?

The battery isn't that bad if you turn off the 3D.

[EDIT] I think that you can replace the battery, there are far better ones.

Well you can get the 3DS XL it has bigger screens and better battery duration is about 6 hours if you turn off the 3D.
