I cant participate in Natural Selection 2 giveaways. I've been playing NS2 when it was on steam's free weekend. Game was amazing, but now i cant enter any NS2 giveaways. It says Exist in your account. I've deleted local NS2 files (downloaded during free weekend), and synced my account many times, but in sync tab it's still saying that NS2 exist in my account.
What can i do?

Sync. Staff should make a thread and make it sticky about this issue.

The game will be shown in your accout as long, as you will have it in recently played games list. It will disappear after 2 weeks after you have played it the last time.

That. I had the same problem. You only need to wait.

This is a known issue with free weekends. All that can be done is for the user to remove any game content they may have on their computer and resync their SteamGifts account. It can take up to two weeks for Steam to update the user's library to reflect they do not own the game, however. Sadly, this is a problem on Steam's end and we can't change it.

Is the DB entry in Steam entirely identical to the one you get when you really own the game? If so, maybe it's an idea to post on Steams' "suggestions" sub-forum and ask them to add a sub for any games' free weekends in the future, so any query on their DB will really show a "free weekend" entry, instead of the same sub as the full game?

I can hardly imagine it is exactly the same though, as otherwise, how would someone trying a game out during a free weekend still get the "Add to cart" button rather than "You already own this game" in the Steam store - Steams' own client can differentiate between free weekend library entries, and full game ownership - what's going wrong on Sgifts' end precisely? What exactly does Sgifts query on a sync? Your subs? Or what?

You have to realize that the exposed steam api is not the full database. They don't make available any flags to indicate whether a game is from a free to play weekend or not. There is not much sgifts can do unless Valve adds features to the api.

I did ask "What exactly does Sgifts query on a sync? Your subs? Or what?"

What does an actual query query? Because I can't imagine the api putting out something different from Valve's own website? And the group checker webpage also has no trouble with this problem of free weekends - it only shows you as owning a game as long as you actually have it in your library.

They likely do this api call but don't be fooled by the "include played free games" option, that is (as the documentation states) only to exclude free to play games like TF2 and has nothing to do with free weekends.

Look at this, follow me here..

This shows several free weekend subs under the Red Orchestra 2 app. (Although somehow, while it's currently on a free weekend, I don't see a sub for the current one, odd).

Now, looking at that page you linked, you can see the immediate issue (and one that Valve can fix with minimal effort);

"Result layout

  • game_count the total number of games the user owns (including free games they've played, if include_played_free_games was passed)
  • A games array, with the following contents (note that if "include_appinfo" was not passed in the request, only appid, playtime_2weeks, and playtime_forever will be returned):
    • appid Unique identifier for the game"

It doesn't show subs, only apps :/

Yeah, the api just wasn't built for this kind of thing. Who knows if Valve will ever add such info.

I don't see a reason not to, it's only adding one field of data to the query. It would literally take minutes for them to do. And it must be how Steam's own client sees that you should still be able to buy a game - i.e. "this dude has a sub for a free weekend - 'Add to cart' still applies".
