I bought it shortly after it came out (in EA) but it didn't really click with me. My biggest problem with Fallen London (Sunless Sea's free to play predecessor) was the grindy nature, and I had hoped that Sunless Sea, being a single player commercial game without a recharge mechanic, would avoid that, but nope, even official guides advised you to spend the first 10 hours escorting Tomb Colonists. I don't know if it's changed since then, but maybe I should give it another look.

Harsh but true. I wish they'd branch out a little more; I think the setting is a good fit for IF or something like Choice of Games. Or even just a novel. I just want more of the writing without having to spend literally weeks grinding, then failing an RNG roll and having to start all over.

I like FL and play it regularly, but... sadly, I can't really say you're wrong. :\

Even better.
Hell, I'd take a Telltale Game. That's not outside the realm of possibility, is it? It seems like they'll give anything with a fanbase at least one season.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm not looking at hard numbers or anything, but I'd guess it has as many dedicated fans as Sam and Max or Monkey Island did before Telltale picked those up. Granted, they definitely seem to be moving away from lesser known franchises...I had no idea they were working on DC and Marvel stuff now.

It's worth a second look. A lot has changed since EA (a lot of the easy money methods have been nixed).
It's by no means a perfect game and the learning curve is pretty steep at the beginning, but it hasn't become my most-played game on Steam for nothing. Great stories, great atmosphere and once you get established it becomes much easier.

Sunless Sea is a game I've looked at a few times, without getting that interested in, despite the many positive reviews. A free weekend would be an excellent opportunity to try it out for real. Thanks for letting us know!
Just got to make sure I won't get any achievements when playing it - since free weekend game achievements stay with you even if you never buy the game, lowering your average completion score ;)

Also on my wishlist. I'll definetely give it a try to see if its gonna stay on my wishlist or not...

Played 1.5 hours and its definitely either staying on my wish list or coming off it because I'll buy it :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Ok, I played half an hour but it needs time. Still trying to understand the game's mechanics. Seems quite interesting though...
Comment has been collapsed.
I found the game mechanics a bit unintuative but actually quite fun to figure out ..

And remember it is 40% off if you like it and want to buy!

Mmm... nah. The game looks nice, but I've got this weird thing about "free weekend" promotions. Even if, and probably ESPECIALLY if, the game looks good, I won't even bother, unless the game is mine forever.
Comment has been collapsed.
I know what you mean but I've bought so many games that haven't lived up to expectations I always give the free weekends a go now for games on my wish list. I can usually make my mind up about a game over a weekend :)

For some reason I expected a sea-themed FTL with a bit more story. Tried it today, didn't last five minutes. It felt like a visual novel without visuals and some RPG elements thrown in. Not my cup of tea, I'm afraid. Maybe I'll give it another shot during the weekend.
Comment has been collapsed.
Its certainly nothing like FTL (which I'm afraid I didn't like). Pretty strong story though - but more like a collection of short story rather than a novel ..
Comment has been collapsed.
I was quite surprised to like FTL myself... and I'm not sure why I was convinced this would be similar. :)

Unrelated but kind of related:
Fractured Space is Free until Monday at 10AM Pacific Time

I'm going to have a quick look at that one too but it will be a quick look as I'm quite enjoying Sunless Sea :)

So apparently it has cards now too, but I'm at 6 hours total without a single drop. They're on the market, so they're probably configured properly...hm.
Comment has been collapsed.
Not sure about the cards but looking in my inventory I can't see any either ..
Mind you I've never looked into cards so no idea what they are about TBH
Comment has been collapsed.
That's frustrating. Like I mentioned farther up, I love the setting and lore, so even if I never touch Sunless Sea again I'd love to have some stuff from it on my profile. It looks like the badges are correspondence sigils!
Comment has been collapsed.
You're correct, but I've owned the game on Steam for a long time.
I actually think Steam thought I was playing on the free weekend license, somehow. Resetting Steam seems to have fixed that, though, and I just got my first drop after 8 hours.
Edit: Nope, never mind, that was a booster pack. Still no Sunless Sea cards.
Comment has been collapsed.
Some people are getting the cards; they released simultaneously with the free weekend but they're already on the market. I'm not sure if this problem is unique to me.
Comment has been collapsed.
They're only offering it for free for the weekend to entice us to take it off our wishlist by buying it ;)

I've spent 70+ hours on this game and really love it. I love it so much I spent my own money to give a copy away.
It's a really special game if it's your thing. Amazing sountrack, creepy atmosphere, rewarding storylines.
My one word of caution is that the learning curve is pretty steep and the first few hours with any captain are the toughest. Things get easier once you reveal more of your map and get some profitable routes up and running.

I can concur that I died several times fairly quickly but it was mainly to not really understanding what was going on in the interface than any fault with the gameplay. Now I undertand the interface things are getting easier ;)

In my case it was just because I either:
Figuring out the balance of going far enough to further the game and make each trip count but not going so far that I couldn't come home was pretty tricky for me.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yep the combat accounted for all my deaths (I think). My biggest issue was remembering to reverse the left right keys depending on whether I was going north or south - I much prefer games that rotate the screen so I'm always heading in the same direction ;) But starting to get the hang of it and now I've realised its easy to pause I can always pause the combat to have a quick think before I engage :)
The exploration has been great fun so far. Loved the story around the three sisters - very atmospheric :) Looking forwards to playing some more tonight and maybe treat myself to a beer which should make me a little more reckless as I'm generally a pretty conservative player in games like this ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh, definitely. It took me a long time to figure out that you're better off avoiding battles until you have a better ship/engine/weapons. I think Mount Nomad got me three times before I realised to get the hell out of there when she turned up. Even those little auroral megalops crabs can be enough to sink you if, like me, you tend to flail around in panic :D
I love the story around the sisters too. My current captain is actually the first one where I got the scarred sister so I'm looking forward to seeing how that works out.

Hello there, it seems that you are the right person to ask, since you have spent so many hours and finished the game. When I tried to start it, the controls/menus didn't feel intuitive to me and I literally didn't have any clue what to do. I am sure that after I grasp some basic mechanics I will figure things on my own, but I don't know how to reach there :P Did you grasp everything on your own at the beginning, or did you also look on some gameplay videos and if that's the case, maybe you can recommend something :)
Comment has been collapsed.
I didn't watch any videos but I did make use of the wiki and read a few tips in the community hub. A lot of the guides are out of date and include things that were gotten rid of during Early Access, so it's hit and miss reading them.
At the beginning it's important to try to make at least a small bit of money with each trip. This isn't a trading game, so the best way to earn some echoes is to collect port reports. Every time you visit an island, get a report. You can sell them to the admiralty for money and you'll sometimes get fuel and supplies too.
The first ship is slooooooow and goes through fuel faster than supplies, so be sure to have a good fuel stock on board. Mount Palmerston and the Iron Republic have the cheapest fuel on the Unterzee so stop there if you happen to be passing.
When you first get to Polythreme buy the 'We Are Clay' item. This will replace three of your crew with clay men, meaning that you go through supplies a little more slowly. Don't have the max number of crew if you can help it - keep it slightly above half full - otherwise they'll eat through your supplies too fast.
Don't bother fighting any enemies. Your first ship is slow and weak and you spend more on fuel circling around them than you'll get as a reward. Even when you upgrade your ship it's rarely worthwhile trying to kill things unless you need something from them.
Talk to your officers. They each have their own stories and if you help them out you'll be rewarded.
Don't mess about with the Blind Bruiser. You can take his commissions and make money but he WILL kill you if you lose your cargo.
When starting with a new captain I find it better to not keep the map. It makes things a little easier, yes, but you also don't get fragments for discovering places and, depending on which ambition you choose, you'll need a lot of fragments to succeed.

Thank you for taking the time to analyse so thoroughly your experience with the game, I appreciate it. I have seen a youtube playthrough and like you said, the uploader himself stated on the comments that it was kind of outdated, since Early Access. My problem is that the game made me feel completely noob. Not that I dedicated much time to it, I must confess, but I didn’t even know where to click and what all these menus/options are for. I was kinda awkwardly clicking and trying if something will work, without knowing what I was doing :) I was hoping to find some source explaining things from the very zero :D
Nevertheless I am sure that your advices will be very useful and valuable to me after I start grasping the basic mechanics of the game. I am going to read them again and again as I will progress in the game (when I’ll manage to get familiar with it) and I know everything that you said will make more sense to me then :)

It's a bit late, seeing as the free time is almost up, but I guess here's a quick basic explanation:
At the beginning of the game you can choose one of three "win" conditions. They are to become a venerated explorer, to find your father's bones or to achieve great wealth. I've heard that the explorer one is the toughest so one of the other two might be a better bet at first.
The win condition you select is on the long finger - it's what you want to be working towards eventually but it will take you a long long time. In the mean time, you will explore the Zee and try to stay alive. Your map will semi-randomise between captains.
You also get to choose a past. Each past gives a bonus to one statistic. Which one you choose depends on your style of gameplay. I like to choose pages (faster generation of secrets, which you can use to level up) or veils (easier to hide from monsters). When you die you get to choose a relationship with your previous captain (e.g. rival) which will allow you to keep some of their stats (only worth it if you've levelled up those stats), or their money (only worth it if you had some) or their map (not recommended if you're doing the explorer ambition). Use these to give yourself a headstart.
While in London you can hire on more crew and buy supplies/fuel, as well as get assignments.
As you spend time at Zee your fuel and supplies will automatically be used up as their gauges fill/empty. You can use less fuel by turning off your prow light but this will increase your terror. Terror increases when you are in the dark and away from land. Once it reaches 100 you go insane.
When you spend enough time on the Zee (~ a minute or so) you get a bell sound and a little lantern will appear at the top right corner of your log book (bottom left of the page). This is called Something Awaits You (SAY). When you have SAY you will get extra options at the next port.
Zail north at first to Hunters Keep - you should get SAY - and talk to the sisters. Call on them when you can. You'll usually be able to have lunch with them and get a few supplies. If you continue north along the coast you will reach Venderbight, Whither and Codex. You should collect port reports from each of these. These are locations that never move between captains, so they are safe to head for.
Then just go further and further afield each time, uncovering more of your map and getting every port report that you can. Avoid all enemies (turn off your lights temporarily to escape if you can) and when you have more of your map revealed, try to island-hop as much as possible. This means your terror won't go up as fast and also gives you opportunities to interact with the stories and buy items.
For a lot of the game you are just exploring and making a small bit of progress on lots of stories. Sometimes it feels like you're not working towards your overall goal at all, but each discovery makes you stronger, or richer, or more experienced and you'll get there in the end.
I've only beaten the game once (Explorer option) and it took me 40 hours. And that was after I'd spend 20 hours accidentally killing my captains and making mistakes. But it was SO worth it.
Also, the game has an autosave function with permadeath, but you can save manually if you want. It has no drawbacks in game, it will only give you an achievement if you manage to beat the game without manually saving. If you prefer, just save under a different save-name yourself (only while in port) and should you encounter disaster you can load up again rather than starting from scratch.
I hope that has been helpful. If you end up buying the game and want more help or advice I'm on the discussion hub on a semi-regular basis or you can send me a chat message. I'm happy to help!

Wishlisted game. Have heard only great things about it, from friends who are into roguelike games.
Engaging, thought-provoking and certainly scary at times, it's big strength lies in it's narration and dialogues as far as I've seen, and it's unpredictability. Rewards also make up for your time. No playthrough is the same as the previous one. So many paths to take... Amazing little gem, gets kinda creepy, with a few lovecraft references, and is certainly a meticulous inspiring work for those who can sacrifice enough of their time, exploring the vast sunless sea in their minds.
Too bad it's free only for 2-3 days. xD

It's just a free weekend. After Monday, you'll have to purchase if you want to continue playing.

Seems like there's a lot of confusion regarding that...not sure what's going on.
On my end, Steam keeps trying to get me to try the free weekend even though I own the game...

I was quite psyched when I saw the free Weekend early (2 days - 23 hours left) so I instantly downloaded the game just to find out after ~ 10 minutes of gameplay I'm getting the same bug I recently encountered with Edge of Space for the first time. Just like Edge of Space it starts and runs without problems but after about 10 minutes my pc starts making a horrible, loud warning noise that seems to come from the SSD and won't stop until I close or tab out of the application :(
Comment has been collapsed.
Yea since my PC is roughly 3 years old that's what I thought too (that the SSD is maybe about to die on me) but it's still annoying... Don't really know what to do about it too because this is my fist PC with SSD (or Hybrid SSD) and so far I didn't have to familiarize myself with it. The SSD doesn't even show as a seperate drive in Explorer. I guess I should download a SSD Diagnostics tool or get professional help if it starts happening with more games...
Comment has been collapsed.
Sounds more like hardware failure than a bug with any particular game(s). Might want to look into it before it gets worse.

How can a loud noise come from the SSD? There no moving parts or speakers etc.
Is your PC overclocked?
Comment has been collapsed.
No it's coming straight out of the box, not overclocked or anything.
It's not coming from the SSD directly (I wouldn't be able to tell anyway) but from a red blinking LED on the front that I associate with SSD activity (but maybe it's just Harddrive activity in general - the symbol below shows a Cylinder). And it's not a mechanical noise from moving parts or something like that but rather one of those beeping system warning sounds.
Comment has been collapsed.
So it's a warning from Windows using the case speaker?
Could be anything really. You need somebody who knows PCs to go through your setup. Maybe driver updates or regressions (going back one driver) would help.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yea that's my guess. Well as long as it's only those 2 games I won't put too much detective work into it I just hope the problem stays confined. Currently I mostly play on PS4 anyway with the exception of the occasional Terraria session and that seems to be working fine so far. But at least with Sunless Sea I found out in advance so I know not to buy with my current system.
Also since both games acted that way from the start regressions might still work I guess, but less likely since I can't confirm that they used to work with older drivers.
Thanks for your imput :D

I also get a loud beep noise during the last years, some times when streaming, other times when trying some games with good graphics etc. I'm guessing it's either a memory issue (either RAM or graphics memory card), or cpu/motherboard problem. It's certainly not the SSD. And it seems to happen to me when temperatures get high, which also reminds me of how my fans are not working at max speeds. :( The bad thing is, I'm still not sure what the culprit of all these is... It's not the SSD though..

I gave away this game. I did because it looks great, not my style but I can totally see why people would love it! Might download it and give it a try :P

Fractured Space is on a free weekend too. Knocked me down from level 3 to 1 :(
I wish SG would't do crap like that retroactively. I gave away 3 copies 1 month ago :/
If you're into Space batles with big capital ships that can take 1/2 an hour try it out!

I intend to give Fractured Space a go too - wish Steam would restrict themselves to one free play weekend game at a time but always have one each weekend :) Updated my OP to incldue info about Fractured Space

More games = more choice. I'm not interested in Sunless Sea for example.

Totally agree, just wish they would have one every weekend rather than two one weekend and none the next :)

Fractured Space seems to be permanently free to keep. You just need to add it to your library before the weekend ends.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've seen this mentioned but couldn't actually see it stated in the game's page but I just had a quick read so maybe I missed it. Be cool if it was as there is only so much I can do in a weekend
Comment has been collapsed.
Well the last time they had a free weekend promotion it was free to keep. Can't say 100% about this time.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm about 90% sure it said it was free to keep before I actually claimed it, but now the store page is just trying to sell me DLC/special editions. There's no "X days left," timer in my library like I usually see with limited free trial weekends, for what that's worth.
Comment has been collapsed.
I agree it's not the most intuative of interfaces but I quite enjoy figuring out how games work and after an hour or so playing I think I got the hang of most of it
Comment has been collapsed.
Nice! It's been a long time since I used free weekends. Today's evening I will :)
Comment has been collapsed.
You still need to buy it if you plan to keep playing it after the weekend. :P

I've been playing Fallen London on/off ever since I finished Dragon Age: The Last Court, so I jumped on the free weekend pretty quickly. Only a few hours in, but I have to say it's slower than you'd expect for a supposed rogue-like game. Still, the story is quite engaging as expected, so when they decide to discount it further at some point, I'll be in :)
Comment has been collapsed.
It's on my wishlist and now I'm carefully avoiding syncing my account over the weekend so I don't miss any giveaway for it. :P
Don't know if I'll have time to try it out over the weekend though... :(

That's why I love these free weekends, chance to find out if a game lives up to its expectatios or not :)

One of my top ten wish listed games so I've already downloaded and started to have a look at this one :)
The game is also 40% off until Monday 1st Feb ..
One positive is that it is a very small download - it took me less than 5 minutes to download
To activate it just go to the Store Page and click the Play Game button. This will install it in your library and allow you to play it whilst the offer lasts
EDIT: Be aware that you may want to avoid synchronising your Steam account with Steam Gifts for the duration of the free play weekend if you do install Sunless Sea otherwise you may miss out on any GAs!
What are your thoughts?
EDIT: Fractured Space is also free to play this weekend too
