Probably because intuitive puzzles are a rarity on SG :P

It tends to all go from 'really easy/hidden-link' to 'I know everything better than you but everyone should find this easy anyway (despite my errors or unique perspectives) so no hints also you suck', with only a few 'match the image'/cryptograph puzzles scattered in-between :P

'I know everything better than you but everyone should find this easy anyway (despite my errors or unique perspectives) so no hints also you suck'

That really hits home for me. That's why I don't usually bother with most of them. The worst is when itstoohard is used and it will not accept an answer that should be correct due to stupid formatting or something that the creator did not properly account for. And then you also get the people that expect you to be a mind-reader. Not to sound ungrateful to the puzzle giveaway creators, but the exact situation that you described is downright frustrating.

That said, this one seems to make sense to me and is not too difficult with a little creative thought.

I am pretty sure that is not the point of hard puzzles....

A lot of people enjoy a challenge and there is a feeling of accomplishment when you solve a difficult puzzle. I personally do not particularly enjoy hard puzzle PC games because it can be frustrating and I would rather not spend money to frustrate myself, but the SG puzzles on the other hand are free and often offer at least a chance of a reward.

And yes it can be frustrating, but you can work at your own pace, leave, come back, or just abandon it all together and the only thing you have 'spent' is your time and maybe a few hairs or years of your life due to stress :P

Well I actually really enjoy playing difficult puzzle games. I mean Braid is one of my favorites and it was brain-melting at first, but felt really awesome persevering and discovering those "Eureka!" moments. I'm really looking forward to Jonathan Blow's next game The Witness

That said, it's often not the puzzles themselves but actually the human error involved in the creation of and lack of proper attention to detail that is the cause of frustration.

Unless I'm mistaken, the point he was trying to make was that there is a difference between "hard" and "hard, cause the puzzle-creator made a mistake so the actual solution doesn't work and/or has an illogical view on things".

In the latter case 'solving' the puzzle would be a moreso combination of bruteforcing or luck (if you happen to have the same illogical view) instead of actually solving a difficult puzzle. So in that case it would lead to frustration and not the feeling of accomplishment.

I understand the 'errors' point, but 'illogical view' I am not sure I understand. Everyone has their own perspective and I think that is part of what makes the puzzles interesting. You have to figure out other ways to look at it and think outside of the box.

Although I am pretty new here and have not done a massive amount of puzzles and maybe some are illogical. But I mean as long as there is a connection somewhere that you can find, no matter how difficult it is, I still think that would be a valid puzzle.

Like if a puzzle asked you to name a color and showed a blue square and then the answer was red. That might be a little illogical... unless it had a cipher or had something linked to other questions that was related to the reason red was the answer for a blue square.

You're on a different topic.
It's when someone DOES have their own perspective, but implements a puzzle in a way that IGNORES other people's perspectives, so that rather than solving the puzzle, you're solving the person's perspective, that it starts getting frustrating.

What really makes it a mess, though, is when the answers are, when not flat-out wrong, very precise in what they accept and usually poorly phrased/spelled.

Add in puzzle creators being MASSIVELY rude about it, insulting people trying their best, it gets ugly, fast.

It's more like, they ask for a color, the answer is 5, and it's spelled 'f1vE', and when you bring it up, they call you an idiot who can't count who should stop wasting their time and that the answer was super simple.

It's.. incredible, sometimes. :P

Pushing aside the odd initial perspectives, the awkward answers, and misbehaviors, there's one other element that's annoying: The complete lack of respect and awareness of other's perspectives, means that a lot of times people are excluded from puzzles for totally unnecessary reasons.

IE, if it's very precise cultural references someone from outside the nation couldn't be expected to understand, and aren't searchable online.

The problem isn't that it's precise; it's that the creators often refuse to offer even mild hints of reference, and get pissed and insulting to people who can't do the puzzle and ask for more information.

Mind you, all those combined make for the most extreme examples, but all too many puzzles on SG have at least a few of the things mentioned involved in them :/

Yeah, that sounds a little extreme. Guess I haven't run across that yet. Although Docam's initial FO4 puzzle was pretty illogical but the hints are what made the answers possible.

I also understand the answer phrases/variations point. I planned on having several answers on my puzzles and having everything very carefully planned. It may seem illogical, but hopefully I can balance everything out. I will have to get your guys critiques when I do my first one. I am currently taking notes for questions for my first attempt, I am not sure when it will be ready.

That was certainly MY point.
I love challenges, puzzles, and the intersection of the two.

But when someone basically does a book cipher without providing you the name of the book, misinputs the answers involved, and then abuses you when you're simply trying to participate, by degrading or mocking your efforts..

That's not a puzzle, it's a sadist's wet dream, and I'm pretty sure I'm supposed to be getting paid for participating- or at least get a new leather outfit out of it all.

Grar. :P

I wish I knew what format these invite links were supposed to be in :P I've never actually seen one before. Do they just look like normal giveaway links with 5 characters between the slashes?
