more like pyramid scam scheme rather than mtx preorder. Besides many many games have had lootboxes/gold/whatever as preorder bonus anyways, so Jim is way too late.

This is a click-baiting headline on Jim Sterling's part; the main funding (and motivation) here is currency speculation, pure and simple. Speculative investors are betting, with no real basis, on this in-game currency appreciating after the game launches. This currency could also be used to purchase in-game items, but it's absurd and baseless to think that's anyone's reason for buying it. Shame on you for spreading this without critical assessment or comment.
