So with Witcher 3 coming out soon, I planned on playing Witcher 1 and 2.
I finally restarted Witcher 1 last night after a few years (because I used to have a craptop) and it's getting hard to get into it.

I actually don't mind the combat like most people, but everything else just bugs me. I don't mind the graphics. Although watching clipping happen with grass in the beginning of the game in a cutscene was really weird. I mean come on it's a fucking cutscene. Also a shit load of pop ins. And I can't turn v-sync on even though I'm getting quite a bit of screen tearing. The animations are just plain bad. Probably the worst part. Everyone just stands there stiff like a puppet with no emotions. Speaking of no emotions, the voice acting is really hit or miss, which doesn't help the writing I've so far seen, which makes it seem like I'm playing a super cheesy cartoon.

Does the game get better? Should I just watch/read a sumup? Or do animations and writing and stuff somehow improve as the game goes on?

Does Witcher 2 have any these same problems?

I really like playing games from the beginning (like Ass Creed 1, and Hitman 1) but I don't know if I should bother with this game, especially since it's so long.

Thoughts?

Is the Witcher 1 worth playing?(Poll Requires Games to Vote)

Yes.
No. Skip it. And just go to Witcher 2.
Witcher series in general is bad. Don't worth with them.

Yes, but you are free to skip it if it fails to pique your interest. I've found the time wasted traveling, loads and loads of loading, and the massive save file sizes to be somewhat obnoxious, but the setting is interesting and the quests are sort of fun.

Does it get better after the tutorial? I was about to learn magic I think, but I was tired so I went to bed.

It was just really strange how the game was trying to be really cool and climaxy in the beginning, but wasn't really how I felt. (Maybe I'm just the minority?)

It changes up a bit after the tutorial area, with more freedom to roam and quest and such. I'm not sure if you'd enjoy that more or less. You'll see some new areas to explore, but I was overwhelmed by the amount of time required to travel around, especially if you want to complete everything available.

The tutorial is the least interesting part of the game. P

Seriously, though, it took me three tries and quite some patience to get into The Witcher. It has a different feel to it from your average RPG, so it took a while for my mindset to mesh with the game. Once that happened, however, everything seemed very "natural," and I enjoyed kicking ass as a Witcher.

i loved Witcher 1, i just started witcher 2 and im highly disapointed, it feels clunky and half the time im having issues facing my character in the right direction thanks to clunky movement.

and it made so much stuff harder. so far i hate witcher 2, but 1 i loved|

one thing that is awesome about witcher 2 though. loads and loads of sex scenes, like legit sex scenes. not like witcher ones nudity card you get when you sex someone. but legit humping and moaning with boobs flying around lol A+ on that
i wish more games would be more realistic like that and not afraid to go nude

The real question is not why that is an option. The question is, why does it actually have a vote?

The first Witcher game is set 5 years after the books end. Also, since you already started, you should already by aware of a certain thing that happens near the saga's end. :P

Yeah, The Witcher 1 hasn't aged very well and definitely requires a lot of patience, I almost dropped it too.

The Witcher 2 is a lot better, but has annoyances too.

Yes. Its gameplay, story, character development(it IS there), sidequest quantities, and many other qualities I can't think of right now are just... Superb. As many have said before me, it IS slow-paced but you should be taking your time with the game itself anyways. It is a very long game. One playthrough had me at 41 hours. For one game, that is over-the-top for me, I'm not sure how it works out for others but the game is definitely worth your time if you can steady your pacing and not rush it, otherwise it feels slow.

Please don't kill me but I don't like Witcher series. First one is just plain boring and second one has the most repetitive combat I've ever seen, also has a bad skill build/usage IMO.
As I said before, please don't kill me.

They did apparently mess with the second's gameplay and not a lot of fans liked that. Hearsay for me since I can't run The Witcher 2 but I've seen videos. The skill system I know for a fact is superior in The Witcher 1.

I disliked The Witcher very much, and wouldn't play any other Witcher games for that reason. But it seems I'm part of the very rare minority who dislike The Witcher... So there's that.

As far as I know, they have a continuous story and you can even import your character from 1 to 2, so yeah...don't skip a chapter.

Are you playing the enhanced edition? It had a lot of lines rewritten and tons of other stuff reworked/fixed and made for much better experience.
Otherwise definite yes, you should play it, finish it, and continue with your save in the next game. =)

Graphically the game has aged pretty badly and combat gets repetitive fast, but that story is the real star.

Well...
The Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski... It's a series of books. And I love them. I have an all-in-one edition, a huge one, with 1300 pages of a very big format.

Are the books any good? I've heard about a lot of books based on games but all were B-C grade. 1300 pages, phew. So it's one of those "look, I don't really know what to write so put there some artworks and call it Collector's Guide" huh? The guy's name sounds Polish but the name is in English... I'm so confused.

Don't blacklist me yet! Hold on! Put down the pitchfork! I've got 5 volumes sitting on my shelf.

There are seven books in total, the eighth came out recently and is a side story. AFAIK only 4 or 5 books have been translated into English officially, but there's a fan mode translation out on the web.

I'd say, these are the best fantasy novels I've read in my entire life along with LoTR series and George Martin's Song of Fire and Ice.

Games are set exactly after the end of books series.

Btw, Martin and Sapkovskiy are friends IRL.

I don't know anything about English translation, but all the books in the series are translated into Russian (and I am Russian), so I have no problem with reading the Witcher here :) Polish fantasy (and science-fiction, too) has been popular here for... half a centruy, probably. And, yes, it's my favourite fantasy series along with LoTR.

Being from Ukraine, I was reading the books in russian as well =) Still, most people in US don't know much about Witcher books due to absence of official translation and lack of proper marketing.

I actually somewhat enjoyed Hitman 1. Woulda been a great game if it wasn't for how bugging it was.

Hitman 2 is somehow harder because it still has some bugs AND everyone is fucking paranoid if you walk within 5 feet of them. At least Hitman 1 you could run around freely. I miss that...

Geralt becomes too strong on 1, and you'll have to walk A LOT, so it got more boring than exciting imho. At least for me, the final boss was real easy.

The Witcher 2 seem to look better in those aspects, but I didn't finish it yet.

So I think for the first one try and skip the side quests and it might be nice. :)

I rather say that games are sequels. They happen five years (not sure about that) after ending of saga. CDPR is explaining a lot in the games however you'll miss hell of the story I'd you'll pass the Saga. The best series I have ever red.
Still you can skip it and start even from Witcher 2 but I suggest not doing this and if you can handle old Neverwinrer Nights style of gameplay from part One - start from the beginning. It's worth it :).

Yeah, the games don't expect you to have read the books at all. I think they were even made to get people to read the books, the way the whole thing is showed.

I'm pretty sure a big majority of people read the books after playing 1 (or 2). It's still worth a read if you ask me, I really love the story.

I've tried messing around in The Witcher 1, but I still haven't gotten out of the starting castle. I always seem to lose interest. Of course, I had a smaller TV until very recently, which made all of the text on the menus a bit of a chore to navigate. I really should give it a third, honest chance before I give up and go to 2.

Definitely. It has amazing music and amazing atmosphere. But make sure to play past first chapter (I think it's called Prologue but I'm not sure) as it's the worst part of the game. Once you're out of the castle real fun starts.
