Do I get points (P) back if I don't win?
Points are used for a chance to win, and they're not returned if you do not win. If you choose to remove your entry from a giveaway that's still open, the points will be returned to your account.

Because the giveaway deletion code doesn't return the points.
Don't worry, points are free and ever-flowing.

Points are Spice? Not the free, but the ever-flowing part.

all this time i thought it did. oh well, i usually have over 200 anyway

True but I know the giveaway he talks about. If I remember correctly, the creator in question registered 1 day ago, only has 7 games in his Steam account and the description was nothing but a link to his Twitter feed. That's just a big red exclamation point in my book :P

In previous iterations of the site, deletion of a giveaway would return the points to the user's profile. However, with the current implementation of the site, several sacrifices had to be made in order to improve site performance. For example, points are now distributed in 15 minute intervals, and deleting a giveaway would no longer return points for the sake of reducing site load. Thank you for your understanding.

i'm also a long term user and i don't see it as punishment. it's a necessity to keep the site running, or else you won't even have a single point to spend since the site wouldn't be here.
besides, you get free points each time a giveaway is created, i don't see the problem when one is deleted. it already generated points for you.

Taking away a feature is a punishment, there's no argument there. It's necessary if you make it necessary, if this website wasn't here another one would take it's place, look around there are a ton of giveaway sites they all work slightly differently but roughly they're all the same, steam gifts has just been around longer and has more and I'd personally say better users.
I see it as a problem because people can create fake giveaways for people to sink points into.

There is, a punishment is something you do towards someone because of something they did (or you think they did). It's not when you change something for the worse for another reason. Here I guess it was deemed an acceptable trade, gain some more server stability for making the site marginally worse in some other regard. Removing us getting our points back for a deleted giveaway really is a marginal thing, it will rarely have any real impact on people.
Comment has been collapsed.
You really do seem entitled if you consider that any kind of punishment. So you lost some points because a giveaway was deleted, big deal. I bet you have gained way more points from all those giveaways that end up deleted that you haven't entered. And those certainly were free points.
Comment has been collapsed.
Sheesh, did you not read what I wrote and just got triggered by the mention of free points?
Fine, I'll explain it further. All those giveaways that end up deleted or not received that you don't enter generate (trigger warning) free points for you. No gifts were delivered, so nobody paid anything. I find it unlikely that you'd end up entering even a majority of them (you can see here the amount of just the deleted giveaways), so most likely you end up gaining more (trigger warning) free points from these than end up losing to the ones you enter.
This whole thing is a non-issue. If you consider it a punishment and think spending time here is a timesink, then perhaps it would be better for you to spend your time elsewhere.

I like steamgifts, I use it.
I don't like the change, I'll complain about it and hopefully something will be done about it. There are more grounds on this too, like other things that could have been implemented to have kept that feature for everyone. That's my argument.
Comment has been collapsed.
It means extra work for servers, even if you think it is minor.
Since no one has to pay for their points, their sacrifice is accepted to keep the site working better.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, read your sentence I was referring to.
You tried to look smart and achieved the oppostie.
Comment has been collapsed.
He is right though. The more of your postings I read, the more it seems that you demand to be blacklisted.
I really don't get why you are that upset. From the last 500 GAs I joined, only 2 got deleted. And that's in your opinion reason enough for your public drama?
Comment has been collapsed.
"demand to be blacklisted" I honestly couldn't give less of a shit if I get blacklisted, I haven't demanded for anything.
How can you not understand? What is there that you can't understand? The change was unnecessary, they picked something that had a negative effect on the users when they had other options and yes they had other options.

But not the user that spent the points. They just waited until they had points, and they can do that again and again. Because there are always more. Ever flowing and pretty much unlimited.
What isn't unlimited is site resources.

Please keep in mind that this site is completely free to use and relies on a single small ad (which I'm sure most people adblock) to cover server costs. Some minor sacrifices have to be made to account for the huge explosion in users over the last year.
Comment has been collapsed.
The sites completely free of charge and that's because you guys made it that way, that's a personal problem in a world that runs on capitalism that doesn't work. Don't get me wrong I appreciate that this website is free, and yes I do use adblocker because the only time I get a virus is when it's from an ad, if google sense and other ad partners did their freakin' jobs I wouldn't have to use adblocker.
There are tons of ways you guys can monetize* the website with it still being free but you guys choose not to follow that route and that's really on you, not the userbase. I'm glad you guys are growing but if you guys aren't getting the funds you need just how long will it be before steamgifts is shut down?
Again I simply cannot state how much I appreciate the work you guys do as support (I've been there and done that for years I know what it's like) and I am trying to be respectful but please see things from my point of view, as a user of this website for years taking something away that was there from the beginning does feel like a punishment.
*if you guys ever seriously wanted to listen to those theory's and idea's feel free to contact me to discuss things privately.
Comment has been collapsed.
and it's really up to you if you want or not to use such a shitty free not-monetized website. Don't like it? Don't let the door hit you on your wait out.
As for sacrificing the users for site looks - new site look did not affect performance, even made the site run faster due to many changes in way it works. The fact that site has twice as many members as when it changed to SGv2 and few times as many compared to when you joined - it makes the site run slower and increasing server load. And yeah - your precious free points got sacrificed for the same of you having access to few times more GAs you have access to coming from few times more users.
Comment has been collapsed.
Who's calling Steamgifts shitty? Why are you trying to put words in my mouth? I believe the saying is, "Don't let the door hit you on your way out." not wait out.
Alright so when they cut back even more features due to increased user load I guess I won't see you complaining at all?
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm being punished by being a long term user and having things taken away that were there in the first place and being given a new website which broke all addons and made the website look pretty much just like the website was with addons with less features is it really that hard to see where I'm coming from with all this?
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't have to "see where you're coming from with all of this." In fact, I don't agree with you at all.
I see someone upset over something that was handed to them for nothing, plain and simple.
I've never in all my life seen so many people looking a gift horse in the mouth as I have on this site.
Comment has been collapsed.
"I don't have to "see where you're coming from with all of this."" Then you're simply a closed minded individual and I'll have no further interaction with you. If someone can't see both sides of an argument they aren't the kind of people I want to associate myself with in anyway shape or form and with that I'll leave you with this.
I am in my rights to be upset to have a feature taken away that I had for years, I'm not looking for this to be changed I just want to voice that I'm unhappy about it so it can be noted that I want this feature back. SteamGifts is a timesink the games you win here aren't free by any means you're putting effort and time into it to earn those games, and giving back to the community..
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't have to see where you're coming from because I don't see it as a problem. Don't put words into my mouth and don't read too far into it. You're certainly allowed to think there's a problem, but I don't have to see your side or agree with it. No one has taken away your "right" to disagree, but don't expect people to not reply when you post a public opinion, either.
Also the "timesink" is irrelevant unless you were planning on doing something more constructive with that time. If you're looking at this site from a "dollar per minute" perspective, then perhaps the problem is with you, and not the site.
You're getting many, many free chances at free games. If that's not enough, then I don't know what is ....
Comment has been collapsed.
Well with this added change you now have to investigate the user that's hosting the giveaway, that can be anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple minutes. That is if you don't want to waste points.
Also who the heck enters public giveaways? I'm talking about forum giveaways here mainly with the effort part.
Comment has been collapsed.
Welcome to the Internet. Where things change during time whether you want to or not.
And yes, I don't really get your problem. Points are free anyway, so what are you losing, really?
Comment has been collapsed.
Points are not free, someone is paying for them with the games they give away. I'm losing a feature I had for years and had it taken away without any notice what so ever.
What this actually does is make it easy to cheat the system, people can create point sink giveaways and gain an advantage by having more points from people wasting points on a fake giveaway. Things change for the better usually not for the worse and this is easily a change for the worse and at the best it's a compromise.
Comment has been collapsed.
True but for you as a consumer they are free. That's a fact.
That's bullshit and you know it. Because everytime you create a giveaway and then delete it, you will lose a giveaway slot.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm not entirely sure I understand your post, but I wanted to clarify a couple of points:
1) You do not get points from your own giveaways.
2) Creating fake giveaways purely to use as point sinks for people with no intention of giving the game will result in suspension.
3) You lose giveaway slots for deleted giveaways.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm well aware of 1 & 2 but with a support staff that's completely overworked it's slow to get rid of people that create fake giveaways, and the change they did allows for this exploitation. I understand that they are justifying the change but I personally don't understand why someone would design a system with a huge flaw like this.
I also wasn't aware of the punishment for removing slots from the user that created fake giveaways, do you happen to know if they will remove all the slots from a user or just ban them at that point?
Comment has been collapsed.
That not punishment, that how this site works, 3 years here and do not know? When you create giveaway you use 1 slot for it, when you get positive giveaway feedback you receive 1 slot back. And finnaly for every 3 positive feedbacks you got addition 1 slot. Every new user start with 3 slots.

Performance and looks are two very different things. Just because the site looks the same doesn't mean the performance of it hasn't changed. I'd much rather lose the points than have a site that crashes a lot (and let's be real, SG used to crash more than it does now). I completely understand your point of view but the points are 'free'. People do not create giveaways to earn points, they create them to a) give away games or b) raise their CV and for those reasons the stream of points should never decline to the point SG doesn't work. And even if it did I am sure support would then think about changing their position on distribution of points.
Sure, it sucks when a giveaway get deleted and I lose points, but hey, it's life. The pros of SG outweight the cons by far (IMHO).

- people who think the site will give away the game they pick
- people who think someone will give them the game they pick
- people with 0% reading comprehension skills
- trolls people
- stupid people
- blind people
that sums it up pretty nicely :3

Because people are greedy by definition, it never stops, even if somebody owned whole steam store but ONE game currently being given away, he'd still join.
Moreover, it's actually sad because if people weren't doing so, not joining giveaway because "somebody else can enjoy it" would be a valid argument, but in current situation it's more like 90-95 greedy people per 1 guy who would really enjoy the game, so your 1 entry doesn't change much anyway.

Generally I don't care.. though it does burn when you have one or more Flash AAA that gets deleted with a few min left and you were already tight on points.
Personally I'd like the site to give back points if it's deleted and cost more than 40 or something.. Should keep it from being a huge issues.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's not really a problem, people should only really enter for wishlisted games anyway. My points are usually at around the 200ish mark unless a wishlisted game was just bundled.

So I spent 60 points to get into a Mad Max giveaway, when the giveaway was deleted. Did I get my 60 points back, you ask? No, I did not. I hopped off two giveaways to get the required amount of points to enter, but then the giveaway was deleted and I never saw those points again. Why is this so?
