You can get mods to improve the graphics, although it is an old game so the graphics wouldn't be great anyway

Just wait fr the Black Mesa mod to come out in a few more years :P

You think Half-Life's graphics are ugly? Hmm, maybe you should try Dwarf Fortress, its a gorgeous game (might need a good graphics card though)that I think you'll love.

or buy half-life: source, still not modern but it runs well and has physics

Yes, definitely. Or if the graphics are really that much of an issue, wait for the Source mod Black Mesa to be released.

"never gotte teh chance to play it cuz the graphic r ugly" I still play many very old games, like Might and Magic 6, so this argument bears no weight to me. PLay it, you already own it anyway.

The first one? I'd say no. Finished it some weeks ago, very disappointinh. Might have been an uber awesome game 14 years ago, it sure as hell isn't now.

Story? Borderline nonexistant. Ending? Made me want to punch my screen. The rest is okay for the time it was released I guess.

Non-existant story? I'm sorry, but it seems you really didn't pay attention to what was going on, did you? One of the reasons Half-Life is recognized as a revolutionary thing in the history of gaming was because it was the first game combining FPS action with an excellent story.

You are a certain cientist working at a certain lab doing certain things that somehow knows how to use weapons, and, for some unknown reason, everyone trusts in you to rescue them from a weird anomaly that caused a shit ton of aliens to appear. Not even going to mention the ending. 10 hours played, and god that ending. It's like a slow paced low budget movie with shitty shooting aspects and a terrible ending. Maybe back when it was released it was an awesome game, don't know, don't care, I don't currently own a time machine. If you are planning to play it now for the first time, my advice is DON'T.

You didn't pay real attention to the story, then. Fine.

I can only wish there was actually one to pay attention too.

For the time, the immersion was unparalleled and the intro alone was revolutionary.
The first time I picked up the game I was surprised that I could interact with the NPCs, the buttons below the desk and the microwave.
The level of immersion (always for the time) was unrivaled and I genuinely felt scared after the catastrophe struck. The atmospheric soundtrack, that accompanied you throughout, was top notch and would enhance the experience even further (another thing that was out of the ordinary, back then).
There were suspicions about G-Man from the start, but only after noticing him walk by on multiple occasions would the plot thicken even more.
As... strange as the final boss might've seemed (also back then), it was the explanation after it that made you surprised.
I believe that you've been playing with the wrong mind-set. The end of the 90s was all about point-and-click adventures and 3D First Person Shooters with a lot of secrets to find. People were supposed to pay attention, and in Half Life this would reward you with story elements (you'd reach your own conclusions depending on what you'd see). Nowadays, you're practically guided all the way through the story.
EDIT: Also, the age of "hyper-realism" with physics engines, CRYSIS-like gameplay and movie-like plot did not exist yet. Half-Life was the first to introduce scripted scenes like a boss.

I'm sure it was an awesome game back then, but he is asking if he should play it now, almost 14 years later. Some games age well, some don't. Half-life is an example of the latter.

... and it doesn't look too bad with it. But I guess you have to own episodes 1 and 2 also, to use it. (Cinematic Mod here)

it looks pretty but why did they make alyx look like a mass effect slut?

You can choose from multiple variants of the different characters' models via a setup/config thingy, actually. So if you don't like one, just pick another.

You get used to the graphics - the issue is, will you get a headache from them?
I know I certainly did. :(
'twas fun up until that point, reminded me of my childhood when I used to only play the intro over and over. xD

seriously? graphics are ugly? if you choose your games by graphics you should go cry in a corner. graphics don't matter at all, it's the gameplay and story that matters. you should definitely play it, love it and get disapointted because HL2:EP3 isn't yet (if it will ever be) released.
