Hi there , my last gaming laptop is broke and they are trying to charge me £920 to repair it so i may as well get a whole new computer, can anyone please recommend anything for me.

My room is quite small so anything compact would be the best.

Here is a small train for your kind help (all lvl 1)
https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/hlgWD/

thanks kindly

Edit: here is the message they sent about the repair ( I only sent it in because the screen wouldn't turn on :p)

Hi John

Thanks for your emails and I apologise for the delay.

We are fixing the minimal amount that we need to see where we stand which is LCD cover and LCD cable. According to the technician, the hinge is repairable without replacing.

This would put repair at about £40. If the machine requires a new screen, we would be looking at another £80 but we wouldn't proceed without informing you.

As the Motherboard seems slightly twisted but working, we would not be able to continue to warranty the machine if this isn't replaced, despite working. Because the CPU and GPU are soldered to the board, this would be around £800 to fix.

As soon as we know more we will certainly let you know.

As always, if you have any other questions or queries in the meantime then please do not hesitate to get back in touch.

Buy a Mini-ITX instead of a full size ATX tower.

Right now I would buy:

CPU: Ryzen 8 cores.
RAM: 16 GB DDR4 (as fast as possible, Ryzen works better with high speed RAM).
GPU: an RX 580, but it's almost impossible to find one so maybe you could get a GTX 1060/1070
SSD 500 GB, HDD 2/4 TB.

This seams like a better idea than a laptop in any case, specially since the OP is asking on a "sort of" gaming forums.

i have no idea about gtx's and such, will this be able to play all the games?

In 1080p sure. In 4K mostly. If you have a lot of money, you can always go with 32GB and gtx1080, they can all fit into very small cases nowadays.

Yes, with that config you can play all current games at 60 FPS 1080p at max details. GTXs are NVidia, RXs Radeon (AMD).

+1. Mini tower is the way to go. Hook it up to the biggest TV you can lay hands on.

I agree with this, with one exception...mini-ITX may limit a lot of options. I think micro-ATX would be a better compromise between the two. It's still fairly compact, but will have an open PCIe slot or two for expansion options. Plus, there are a lot more gaming motherboard options in that size range.

But yeah, good suggestions on CPU, etc. I'm running a 1070 for my GPU right now, and I play Forza Horizon 3 on ultra wide screen (2560x1080) on an older gaming CPU (8350 OC'd slightly) without issue. My next upgrade will be the Ryzen...best bang for the buck.

Definitely go mini-tower as suggested. It doesn't take up too much space, and when something dies, you can simply replace the part. Laptops have too much proprietary crap in them, and no matter what anybody says, the gaming experience is never as good on laptops (unless you're willing to drop like $3K on one, and then it'll still get blown away by a $3K tower) as a desktop build, because laptop components are built with a focus on power savings over performance.

For someone accustomed to a laptop a mini-ITX is more than enough, he probably doesn't even know what a PCIe expansion slot is.

there are a lot more gaming motherboard options in that size range.

A MB like this is perfect for a gaming rig: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-AB350N-Gaming-WIFI-rev-10

If you're looking for a PC, not a laptop I can link you a thread I've made some time ago - people have helped me pick the best parts for a build. It was a time when I was rich enough to think about getting new rig but it has changed so quickly :P

A PC would be better, you can upgrade and customize it the way you want to. RGB, Extra fans for better cooling, extra ram, SLI, tempered glass to show off your build and much more .. :)

I just bought myself a Crystal 460X RGB, (1 week later Crystal 570X RGB released -_- ) But there are some much better case, I bought it because of the dust filter (And it looks nice :D ), which many other do not offer.

Can't help you ^^" I asked my brother to pick a decent computer for a reasonable price. I have no problems when it comes to maintaining my own computer, but buying a completely new one? O_O I'm so clueless...
Hope yopu find a good one ^^ because... that's really far to expensive to repair your laptop.

Hey, a sincere advice make a PC. I got my laptop 2 years back for £1100 and same happened with me , I got it repaired and now it can't run current games. You can easily make a PC with Gtx 1060/1070 with that much money.

Well, we need a budget to build a nice computer.
Also, it would be great to be 100% sure if you want a laptop, or a desktop, than, it will be easier to choose one.

Either will be good as long as it isn't super massive. We can assume the budget will be around £1000

Do you know what is broken? You could try repairing it yourself.
*Why not go with the cheaper repair of the screen? I mean you don't need their warranty if they charge you for the repair anyway right?

Hmm.. They're saying the Motherboard is working so I'd just contact them and try to make clear what exactly is needed and what the warranty is for, maybe you can get a phone number to speed up the communication process.

Jeezo, for £900 you could get yourself a killer desktop: http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/Saber.html

But obviously, you're not wanting to spend that much, so check this guy out for £770 http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/Explorer.html

Well, first of all, it's refurbished, take that any way you want. Second of all, I have no idea if they'll sell it across the Atlantic or what fees that might incur.

Size nowadays is not an issue. The Gigabyte Brix GB-BNi7HG6-1060 has a GTX 1060, an i7-7000, two RAM slots, andt size is 22×11×11 cm. Smaller than a handbag.
If you are okay with a desktop, then try a mini-ITX build.

My goodness-- how does that thing stay cool? Where does it vent?

Takes air from the bottom and lets it vent upwards.
Also, both components actually have low TDP compared tom components people usually associate processors with.
