Dead Space is a good series.

But no one cited Cryostasis. Excellent story and good gamepley. An unfairly forgotten game. It went out on a bundle last year.

Condemned. I really wish more players would experience it. The second one is crap but the first is up there with Silent Hill games as far as that WTF is going on OMG I just crapped my pants feeling that Silent Hill games give you.

system shock 2 was pretty tense, but again, if you can't get into dated graphics it won't do anything for you

Penumbra series/Condemned (FPS - Great action and amazing setting, mostly melee combat)/Silent Hill 1 - 2/Cryostasis (FSP - story driven, harder than most, and really really good)/Cold Fear (zombies in a ship, the tides make you change balance constantly and aim again)

System Shock 2 is starting to look it's age, but it is still one of the scariest, creepiest games I've ever played. Even though it looks like crap, try playing through the first time unmodded for the ambiance, since a few of the mods change lighting and the like and make it less immersive.

There's one decent horror, i won't say its name, but here's a hint: the name of the game begins with "Amne-" and ends with "-sia".
