The Galaxy S4 is the newest gadget in the market and Samsung is (atleast for last few years) known for being a pioneer in technology. The interface is user friendly and they make sure their are frequent updates atleast for the front liner phones. Dun get me wrong, HTC one is a great phone as well but HTC is known to have poor battery backup as compared to Samsung phones. Also S4 supports SD card whereas HTC One does not and not to forget the Camera resolution. The note 2 in my opinion doesnt stand in the competition becuase of the ergonomic factor. It's large and doesnt fit in the pocket, that alone can be irritating. It's better buying a tab then note 2

The HTC One is a damn fine looking phone. Much better built than my Galaxy S2 (and the build of the S4 looks like the S3 which is like the S2 which is a bit plastic-y)
Granted, the metal case on the One means it is slightly heavier but it isn't a 'bad' heavy more of a reassuring weight in your hand and you can't open the case up for spare battery nor does it have an sd card slot, but it is a good phone. Haven't had enough of a play with a One to say how the battery is / how quick it is / how good the camera is etc.
Going to go with natural progression and say the S4 will be better than the S2, which at it's release was the market leading phone. Quick processor, brilliant screen, good camera, excellent call quality etc. So can only assume that the S4 will be much better.
Haven't seen a Note 2 so can't give my opinion on that. As someone else mentioned, look at the Xperia Z (dust & waterproof upto 1m for 30 minutes), reasonable looking phone. Then there is the Google's Nexus 4 if you'd rather have the raw processing power of the Android OS without all the manufacturer's added stuff. (I'm considering one as I've never touched the Samsung's apps or anything else they have added on my phone and can only guess that they simply waste storage space).
Haven't used, held or seen the Xperia, Note or Nexus 4. Make your own choices!

Yea :/ No replaceable battery, but you'd hope that in a 2 year contract, the battery wouldn't degrade that much and if you want a phone for intensive battery use get something else.
Also there is no external storage option on the One, so less music / films / games / photos etc.

I don't have a problem with no external storage, as I use way less than 16GB. Others may have problems with it missing though. The only gripes I have is the embedded battery and the more unfriendly UI that most HTC phones have compared to Samsung. Otherwise, it would be on my radar when I need a replacement phone.

The Maxx HD had awesome battery as long as I had service, once I get into a dead zone the battery life gets destroyed in a few hours. Usually it would last 2 days on 1 charge under ideal conditions when I had service all day.

Between Samsung and HTC, Samsung is more user friendly with the physical buttons provided. HTC isn't that friendly on them buttons. Even a kid can get used to using a Samsung phone in a few days while HTC doesn't have such a feature. Between the three phones mentioned, the HTC one is not a bad phone, but not the best choice here. The Note 2 is better if you want a really big screen here, but if you don't need such a big screen, I would personally recommend the S4 here if you like having a juicer battery and the microSD card slot. Else if you prefer having only what you need mostly, the HTC One will do the trick but you will need to charge the battery more often cause of not being able to replace it.

I use my phone all the time and multitask often with it. So its crucial for the phone to be very responsive and working when I need it to work. My first android (HTC Thurnderbolt) was awesome, but it had a battery life of 3 hours or an hour and a half of watching a show during my commute. The Razr spoiled me in terms of battery life so I didn't have to charge every day. However, after loading it up with tons of apps the frame rate dropped and it froze many times. So, as a heavy user, a high end phone is very important.

Well, all these people giving u the tech talk. Imo the Tech-Talk is important, but somehow i feel like u need a description that describes how u can use the phones in daily life, so here's my advice ( watch out, im just giving you my opinion, it can differ from others, cause of personal taste):
I own a S3, my Girlfriend is having a HTC One and i will buy mine in a few weeks. Now you ask why? Heres my Reasons:
The HTC One is a perfectly shaped, nice handfitting, light and resistable device. As the S3 ( might just had a bad model or sth, but still, thats my opinion ) is a bid to big, the plastic cover started to get noisy after a few weeks of use and the battery while surfing dies like in 3 hours. As compared to the HTC One, my girlfriend had it not loaded for 2 days going bananas on the phone.
Furthermore, i had some huge Problems with S3 Connections. After going to the Distributor, they gave me a new S3 and the bad Connection still was present. As for the HTC One, my girlfriend is having Connections in the last Corner of Neverland ( we have the same provider ).
So, coming to an end: I would say, get the HTC One. Everything HTC did wrong with their old Smartphones they did right on this one. And the S3 i find a bit off overrated.
Have fun Choosing and then Using ur new Phone.
( sorry for my bad english, its not my native language ;) )

I'd avoid all three. They're simply too big and too clumsy to be used as a phone. Get something smaller (up to 10 cm) and enjoy using it as a phone.
That's my opinion. I used to own LG GT 540 until it didn't start messing with me for no apparent reason and now I'm phoneless. And it's great.

The bigger the phone is the easier it is for me to notice that I lost it and the harder it is for me to lose it. If it wasn't for the Razr being so thin, I think I would still have it. I think if I had a case like this I wouldn't have any trouble with finding my phone. For now I'll settle with a shiny case that adds some bulk though.

From what you're planning on doing with it, I'd recommend the S4. The main thing the One has for itself is the Aluminium casing and you'd be hiding it anyway. Specwise, the S4 trumps the One in every major aspect and you can add an SD card to store all those pics/vids you're planning on taking.

Updates added, winners selected. Building a time machine to get the S4 sooner. If it gets delayed again, I'll be getting the HTC One.

Winners
I decided on the Samsung S4 and I had to pick two winners because of how convincing their conversation was.
Winning comments
UPDATE: I compared the two in person and decided on HTC One because of the camera and build. I've been using it for almost a month and it is the best phone I have ever had. No complaints about battery and I set it up with lookout so I wont ever lose a phone again.
I lost my phone (Razr Maxx HD) last week and the battery died, so I don't know if it was taken or if its just in my car. Anyhow I need a new phone and am stuck between the HTC One, Galaxy S4, or a Galaxy Note 2. I looked into all of them and the HTC One just came out, Galaxy S4 comes out next week, and the Note is a dinosaur that came out in September.
The person who gives me the most convincing argument for one of the three gets fortix (Seriously, its fortix.)
Updates:
Reading through the comments I've decided to narrow the decision down to just the HTC One or Galaxy S4. I'll be getting the phones through T-mobile so the price is $99 (HTC One) vs $149 (S4.)
As for information about how I'll use the phone, I'll be using the device for:
In conclusion, It needs to be fast and battery life needs to be amazing because I'll be using the phone A LOT. The phone will be in a case so cosmetics isn't important.
More updates
Looks like PhoneDog also had trouble picking one.
