So I bought Battlefield 3 like 2 weeks back ( $25 ), the thing is that sometimes it laggs a lot and sometimes it runs very smooth.
Mostly laggs...
It is still playable but I'm not able to get as good scores as I would like to.
My PC configuration
AMD processor dual core 2.7GHz,
512MB ATI Radeon Graphics card,
6GB of Ram
I run everything on low and I think 1024x768, I also use Razor Game Booster which does help.
It would be really helpful if I didn't have to have Chrome open all the time.
No I dont have money for a new PC (My motherboard is old and basically upgrade is not an option, I'd have to get a new configuration), not everyone is wealthy

TL;DR
So please give me some tips to speed up my old PC.
Also some pointers for finding servers for BF3 (I dont really get how the filters work)

I figured why not ask people who game and might have similar problems, google will just give me a bunch of crap because every company advertises as being "the best out there"

Thanks, but most of it is not gaming oriented, my windows runs fine and I do most of the things said there. Is there a program similar to Razor Game Booster? Or does anyone else experience Battlefield lagg so they know how to fix it?

Edit: I even close Windows Explorer while playing BF3

In my opinion all game booster things are not so good, if you close manually all programs and do the same things that boosters do it will be better as boosters use some of cpu's capacity

My booster closes everything I designate, then shuts down itself

Yes, it has a "boost" mode
Just make sure to configure it beforehand, it doesn't do much at default

It actually does help, if you're CPU bottlenecked. Won't do much if your CPU has power to spare.

well, it seems your graphics card is causing most of the lag, as it only has 512mb ram. if possible, try and either obtain a card with 1gb ram, or lower your graphics settings.

i never played bf3, could never get it to work on my system. i would always get disconnected by the time i loaded.

Interesting... I always thought I have a slow CPU, I'll look into that

When VRAM is full, textures get swapped into and out of VRAM. It's similar to what happens when your RAM is full and you alt-tab between two programs that use a lot of RAM.

That can be the problem. BF3 can go really hard on VGA, and it uses a lot of VRAM.

I agreed. You probably need to change your VGA card.

We don't even know WHAT card you have. 512 mb can be crappy current gen ATI or best card of 2-3 generations ago...
Also, 4:3 resolution? Is your monitor that ancient? Or are you mangling your picture on 16:10 or 16:9 one?

Its pretty old, Radeon 4000 series.
Yes I still use 4:3

The model number is important here, not the series.

A 4870HD might still give you reasonable frame rates in many modern games, particularly at low resolutions, but a low end one might barely run anything much more demanding than Notepad at non-slideshow speeds...

Assuming you're using ATI Catalyst drivers, you should be able to check the exact model so people have a better idea of your hardware.

You have to know what kind of GPU you have. I use a 4890 and it's still a respectable card for modest 1080p gaming.

What they said. 4200 is crap, 4850 can still beat some modern cards.
Also, get better monitor, your eyes are important -.-

The thing is u need a better grafic card. and shutdown the Explorer.exe in the Taskmanager when ure in game.
That will help a lot.
what else will maybe help if u shutdown everything that dont used in this time.
As well install the game on another HDD as the System will help a lot.
The minimum preferences arent right i think.
PS.
An grafic card with 1GB RAM is minimum i think.

I did a post on this a while back. I was trying to target people like you. You can check it out, here.

You will only be able to take it so far, without hardware upgrades or a from scratch reformat.

Replace your video card with a more recent card with at least 1GB video ram. Or disable AA, and if that doesn't help, lower resolution.

You can get a video card decent enough to play that game on less than max settings for under 150 USD.

Well if your mother board is a AM3 or AM3+ you could upgrade to a X4 (since BF3 is true quad-core, below that some models dont even load/game bugs), and get a $100 graphics card...thats about all you need, have a friend running BF3 on high with a i5 2500; EVGA GTS 450; 4GB of RAM, 1400x900 at ~30-55fps.

Aside from that if you dont have such motherboard, you could 'rebuild' for about $300...Even less maybe. (Or just get a dedicated graphics card, but will still have some problems with the CPU.
