I just can't believe that they thought someone would give them a game that still costs like $40 for a game they can get free.

yep I know someone hoarding them a few months back, 1 Dota invite costed around 6TF2 keys, which was a lot.
now they have plummeted to 1refined metal each.

Probably not 90%. But I think because COD is popular and there are several "old" COD games out there which don't really drop in price. So people want to trade for them instead of pay a lot of money for an old game. The logic doesn't make sense, but most people just don't care. They'll still try to trade their shitty dotas, quite low of them.
