Why am i seeing so many Portal games being given away, is there some sale or somewhere or something??

There is never enough Portal.

Probably because there have been an influx of members on the site, I imagine a lot of people have it from the Holiday Gift Giveaway on Steam (I haven't seen stats, but I'd guess Half Life and Portal were probably the games you were most likely to get). So just maybe a lot of new people doing first time gifts? Could be wrong though!

Towards the end of the holiday giveaway they increased the chances of getting Valve games and Portal was the most commonly received game

I wish cg would bring back the Portals-per-day stat. :(

How many people wanna bet that I don't get Portal despite entering all the Portal giveaways?

Better question is why don't you own portal with a register date of November 25, 2010?

You mean Steam registration date? I've only been on SteamGifts for a few months.

That said, I got on Steam only because a friend bought me Recettear via Steam. I was never really that interested in any of Valve's own offerings until TF2 became f2p last year (which I picked up wondering what all those memes were about), and then one of my friends started playing Portal 2 and replaying Portal recently.

no he means that it was 100% free twice on steam, indicating your steam join date was before one of the free portal thing.

I only ever knew of one that was before my time. When was the second one?

For me, I think it's included in the Portal bundle when it's dirt cheap.

Second time was more or less hidden since it was made for the students that visited Valve. It was never announced on the front page.

Why is there a lot of portals? Good question. Probably because people bought the Valve Pack, Portal bundle, and Orange Box over the winter sale even though they own Portal giving the extra gift. It's a worthless copy.

With packs/bundles you do NOT get a giftable copy of a game if you already own it.

Orange Box is an exception, I believe.

Nope. I activated Orange Box recently, no Portal despite owning it earlier.

Valve packs is an exception.. at least to Half Life that I know of.
edit: above says other wise. I guess not.

I thought there were more DOTAs than Portals

Lots of DOTA 2s as well. Did they start giving DOTA 2s like SMNC or something? Ppl were trading about $100 worth of games for those things, now they're being giving out here like candy.

Still no Portal for me. :/ I've entered like 50 Portal giveaways but I haven't won any of them. Even the private ones and the puzzle ones with 20 people entered... CURSE YOU PORTAL!! :D:D

Yeah but what's the point if you almost never win.:D I have won only 4 gifts and 3 of them are from group giveaways + in one of them they gave away 3 copies.:D

4 gifts for 490 entries is pretty good statistics)

Cuz even for portal it is usually not less than 200 entries and that s 1:200 chance to win) Usually it is even less unless it is group giveaway^^

Well as I said - 3 of those giveaways were group giveaways with less than 30 or 20 participants. Plus, in one of them they gave away 3 copies. So I had a pretty big chance to win something in them.

it's pretty much an average of 1 in a 1000 chance to win, so don't be surprised at your win:loss ratio :P
as others say there's always points to spend on but i suggest giving the creator an option for a entry cap.

ex. contest will close at 600 users or 5 hours, whichever comes first.
