You might want to consider a SSD instead and perhaps some faster RAM.

He dose not. It's a pretty tight budged it seems, 450 bucks, and it's not worth sacrificing anything else for a SSD and faster RAM(there's no big difference between 1333 or 1600 anyway).

in todays PC's.. the biggest upgrades you can make, is going from HDD to SSD and ofc upgrading your GFX card.. most CPU's haven't been fully utilized yet.. so SSD's and GFX cards will give you a massive performance upgrade

I totally agree. But, i don't see the point of going for a SSD in a tight budget. If he wants to game on it, then, imo, it's best to go for a GPU/CPU best you can buy and build your pc around that. He can always add a SSD later if he feels the need to or he has the cash.

Also, the ceapest SSD he can get from that site is a SanDisk ReadyCache at 32GB with 40bucks. I for one, would rather invest those 40 in some other component that will help me a bit more in the long run and it will give me higher performance now.

I just adviced him to consider it. If it is out of his budget, then sure, he can skip it. Otherwise it really would make a difference.

I would go with a 2GB video card if I were you, the MSI Radeon HD 7850 isn't much more expensive than the one you have listed, it's one of the cards I'm considering getting when I build my own PC very soon. (I have noticed that GPU prices seem to have gone up quite a bit in the last few days though, maybe you should wait a bit for them to drop again before committing to a purchase)

Going with that CPU and Mobo you're not leaving yourself any space for future upgrades... You should look into getting an AM3+ mother board with an AM3 or an AM3+ CPU, such as the FX 4100, which should be around the same price. Also, I think the 7850 shouldn't cost much more than the 7790, so if you can move some things around I'd highly recommend going with that instead.

NEVER go with anything in the fx series that isnt x3xx.. fx 4300 8350 6300 and so on.. it has the newer Piledriver architechture rather than the old Buldozer architechture

I wouldn't categorically say "NEVER", there's nothing horrible about Bulldozer CPUs. They're certainly better (faster and more efficient) than the old FM2 chipset ones.

The 7850 is 20-50% faster than the 7790.

Yeah, that is why I recommended it over the 7790, as they're at a similar price range.

It's a decent build for the price. But you can drop a stick of ram and go for 4 GB (no game on the market requires more atm and you can easily add more later) and drop the DVDWriter and invest the money in something else like a better GPU. That would get you an extra 40 bucks that you can spend on a better GPU and then you can go for either a Radeon HD 7850, an GTX650TIB-DC2OC-2GD5 BOOST, or even an GTX 660 maby.

That's what i would do anyway :P

Go with the AMD FX-4300.. it's $20-30 more expensive but you will get SUCH a performance boost compared to the ancient Athlon processor you have chosen (All in the athlon series literally SUCKS)

Let me know what your MAX budget is and i will put together something nice for you (i have been building PC's for many years)

try to get a phenom ii x4 or x6 and overclock the hell out of it
better (single core performance, and they are true quad cores) and cheaper than fx series.
fx4 series is a dual core with 4 threads, fx6 triple core with 6 threads, fx8*** quando core with 8 threads.
and with a decent am3 board you can still later upgrade to fx series
get a hd7850 instead of the hd7790.
also get a better psu, 550w/600w atleast

"...Windows recognizes Bulldozer-based CPUs as 4-core/8-thread CPUs..."
of course you will have more overall performance with a fx8***, but an overclocked phenom ii x4 or x6 is still very good for gaming.
of course that if developers start using amd's api, mantle, having more core will be really important.

I have a Phenom II x4 965 BE and for now i will just buy a new board and overclock it, instead of buying Fx6 or FX8.

A few days ago Newegg had deals for 7850s around that price range
Anywho here are a few GPU recommendations, althought I'm not sure if the CPU will bottleneck it or not.
HIS 7850 IceQ X 2 GB - $150 via Amazon
PowerColor 7870 2GB - $160 ($30 mail-in rebate) via Newegg
XFX Radeon HD 7790 1GB - $89.99 ($20 mail-in rebate) vis NCIX US
