Three

My Dungeon and Dragons books are arriving in a few days, and I'm absolutely stoked! It'll kinda be a throwback to the board games I used to play with friends like Game of Life, Monopoly, and iirc Scrabble sometimes as well.

You could try looking for groups at local colleges or gaming supply stores. If you like role playing your character or prefer a campaign where you can be almost any class or race of your choice, D&D 5th Edition is one of the best. (I prefer more the more abstract 1st Edition AD&D but I'm a relic today.)

there are no game stores here, just 1-2 events dedicated to "alternative games" per year and a handful of people that i know play them.

I am glad to see that there are still people interested in Dungeons and Dragons. When I started playing it in the early '80s (yes, I'm old) I never imagined that it would turn into kind of a cult classic. It sure has changed a lot since those days. I still have a couple of my lead miniatures around here somewhere along with a bag of assorted dice.

The only thing I knew about D&D was in the form of those touchscreen mobile games which were actually decent, but it didn't give that "wow" factor. At that time anybody I'd ask about D&D would absolutely swear by it and declare it as something so holy that brilliance was exuded from its orifices (and this part may be an exaggeration, heh) But anyway, I didn't really buy into the hype till I saw DoctorofJournalism's thread and realized that it's not a video game but a board game, so I was pretty enthused because I absolutely loved board games back in the day!
