That's interesting, but a bit pointless. It's a dangerous virus, and I'm pretty much sure that everyone here already knows.

It's dangerous enough to kill people that have no proper knowledge about the virus. So I'd say it's pretty much in the "Very dangerous" section.

There's no actual active treatment for Ebola.. and Education doesn't stop infected people from actually dying from it. To say this virus is not dangerous is plain stupid, some medical staff who went to Africa to help the population there actually caught the virus and died, were they too uneducated or missing the proper treatment ?
Clearly you don't know much about it even though you're talking about it like you're a world renowned expert on the subject.

well, education about how the desease spreads prevents infection (not in all cases) and therefore saves lifes.
if you get infected, there is not much that can be done, but very good care increases your chances a bit. defeating the desease is (until there is a cure) only possible by preventing further infectons.
only a small portion of medical staff got infected, because they have good education - and of the people flown out most survived because of excellent treatment. (and perheps because of zmapp)
problem in the region is: people do not trust doctors, treat sick at home and often touch dead during burials (thats how it initially got spread).
The virus is dangerous, but if you do proper precautions and so, it is managable. those people who panic or fear overestimate the virus. it is not airborne and does not spread like flu.
i am not an expert, but i do know a bit about viruses in general and what i wrote is what i heard from experts. just do the research yourself.
actually there is a great podcast about viruses which is done by a professor for virology. in the last episodes they addressed the issue of ebola.

Maybe because they people they were helping were actively fighting them? Clawing, spitting, and biting them. They didnt magically get ebola just because they were around patients or with-in some magical radius.
Before you jump on the fear and hype train about ebola and insult others, why dont you actually look into the life cycle of ebola and how it spreads? Its pretty hard to contract ebola if you dont go searching to become infected.

Insult others? Where did I insult anyone?
Some of the medical staff that contracted the virus are not aware of how they managed to get infected so no it's not always due to obvious physical contacts. If the virus gets around populated area it can be seriously disastrous so no I'm not jumping on any fear and hype train, I'm being realistic. Also saying you have to be stupid and want to look for it to contract the virus is pretty dumb. The virus could mutate and has done far more damage than it did in it's previous outbreak about 20 years ago. Laughing at it like it's a joke and nothing serious is stupid..

youre right...that virus is no joke.
nobody knows how exactly the medical staff got infected, but probably by mistake or fault in protection equipment. They risk theirs lifes by treating those patients.
they are also killed by lack of education and superstition of locals source
the virus may mutate, but in most cases mutations of such viruses decrease its lethality. according to this article it is not very likely for it to get airborne

My city once fucked with Ebola's little brother. It's a miracle it all went so well back then.

I noticed recently there is a softdrink in GTA V called E-Cola.
I guess if they had known prior they had refrained from that pun. :D

Yes, you're right but with just a better medical care the lethality is reduced, the main issue with ebola is dehydration: which is dangerous in a country that has already water problems but in the first world the hospitals can provide intravenous feeding.

Bad education, superstition and local culture? Sounds like the observation of an arrogant person from a rich western country to me.
Do you know that there is almost no medical personnel left to treat the increasing amount of infected people? There was no working health system in those countries to begin with and now most of the nurses and doctors fled out of fear. Only very few doctors are left who have to treat far more people than they have beds for in hospitals, and those hospitals are so badly equipped you can't even compare them to hospitals in a western country. People die in front of the hospitals, parents knock on hospital gates and want their sick children to be treated, yet the doctors can't let them in because there is no room for them. And that's why those people drive around in taxis from hospital to hospital, hoping that they will be treated somewhere, further spreading the infection.
It's chaos, despair, a catastrophe. That is the reason why the plague spreads so fast. And not stupid people with stupid traditions.

I live in South Africa, and even with hospitals here, people are still superstitious and the education system here is one of the worst in the world. What's refered to when he says local culture, is that when someone dies, the locals, usually consisting of BIG families, would all go up to the corpse and touch it as a final farewell. Many people who get sick will also prefer to go to witch doctors, since they rather believe in the power of their ancestors than modern medicine (and it's a lot cheaper than going to a hospital). This isn't just an observation of an arrogant person from a rich western country

I never said that people are not superstitious and badly educated. And I also never said that this is not part of the problem. But he said that there are three reasons why the plague spreads so fast in Africa: superstition, bad education and local culture. That is what I call arrogant. Because one of, if not the most important reason why the plague spreads so fast is what I described above. If those countries would have a perfectly functional health care system with health insurances, thousands of doctors and high tech hospitals around them like in western countries it would be a whole different story.

well, you are right of course, i did forget to mention the obvious fourth reason of missing medical infrastructure. thanks for pointing that out.
nonetheless, the other factors are also a big problem. one we should have done something about.

Actually, Africa is filled with riches, which is why so many people and companies are investing heavily in it. Unfortunately, it still suffers from the lasting legacy of European colonization. Arbitrarily drawing borders never works out well.

well part of the problem is:
they have lots of natural resources. western companys work with those warlords and dicatators to get them and the common people suffer and are left with the waste.
instead of plundering their continent we should help them.

well it takes 21 days to take in affect
so if you just bumbped into a ebola patient your still fucked!!!

Specifically in semen?
Edit: Oh it says all bodily fluid. Ok

I don't know what everyone's worried about, just take a baby asprin and a glass of cranberry juice every day for a week and you'll be fine. ;)

since the virus survives up to 7 weeks in semen, after recovery from illness.
source: WHO website
fun facts aside:
1 Ebola will not likely spread in western countries as it did in africa, the spread in africa is due bad education, superstition and local culture (especially burial rites) edit: and of course the obvious reason: the do not have the medical infrastructure we have. (thx Phitt for pointing out i forgot this important factor)
2 similar to infections like cholera, with proper care (infusions etc) the survival chances are increased
3 the lethality of viruses typically decreases over time
i am not an expert on viruses, so do the research yourself.
good starting point (if you do not want to actually dig into the papers yourself): http://www.twiv.tv/
